: Hands free kit
brickman 11-07-2004, 06:17 AM I recently read the thread "New and upsetting cell phone laws in CA" and it has prompted me to show the hands free kit I got for the Accord from Verizon. When I started this search, the most important thing for me was a quality unit....I wanted good sound along with good looks. Verizon pointed me at the Kyocera phone and kit that I have now and while the phone will look somewhat outdated, it is quite durable and I think you will agree, the hands free kit looks quite nice! I have had it for 2 years now and I love it. The following photos show front and side views. Notice how neat and uncluttered the setup is. (is it not possible to post more than one pic at a time?)

brickman 11-07-2004, 06:25 AM What do you think? As I already stated, I love it. There is a little microphone above my head and the speaker is mounted and hidden behind the head unit. Very clean. Here is what the microphone looks like...

BenjiBoy650 11-07-2004, 06:41 AM You can post more than one pic at a time but you'd have to post it on another server and link it onto the post using the IMG button. Nice setup BTW, I'd love to have one but seeing as how I use my phone less than 100 minutes a month in total, it probably wouldn't be worth it lol
ssjones 03-26-2005, 09:45 AM Nice work Brickman. I have had a hands-free system in my work car for several years and will not travel without one. I travel on from MD to the NY thruway (Rochester last week), NJ turnpike and the PA turnpike. Very dangerous in my opinion not to have 100% attention to your driving on these routes.
I had a Nokia phone but just upgraded to a Motorla flip-phone (V400). My boss had the hand free for the Motorola in her truck but didn't use it. I yanked it out and installed in my Accord. I installed the microphone in the same location as you! I had to order a new cup because my model was different than my boss'. ($35)
Fortunately, I was able to reuse my existing antenna mounted on the top of the rear window.
Another feature of the hands free I missed the short few weeks I was without was the charging ability.
I also installed a SkiFi2 XM radio in the dash cubby. Here's a shot of the install, showing my old phone (new mount on the same stalk - 3rd vehicle!)

EXLNavi 03-26-2005, 12:22 PM I used to have a hang up cup kit for my T720 after I gave up on the OEM Honda kit. I removed it and put the motorola Bluetooth kit when I got the V710.
Couldn't be happier. For charging I just use a cig lighter charger and I really like the fact that I can choose not to charge the phone (and reduce damage to the battery through everyday rapid charging) when I don't want to. My phone also remains on my belt. The only drawback is that I can't use the external antenna, but I ordered an antenna connector so when I want the antenna I can connect it. Thru the control panel for the BT kit I can also use the V710's voice dial feature, which is pretty good and works without having to train the phone.
It's good to have a handsfree because the threat of a ticket in NY and NJ is very real! I got one in Brooklyn last November, but got it dismissed after the cop didn't show.
ssjones 03-26-2005, 03:03 PM Phone belongs to work, so it doesn't matter how many batteries I go through. My last phone was nearly three years old before I got a new one and I was still on the original battery to boot! I'm not certain, but the hands-free charger may not have the same effect on battery life.

I had a phone from work (it's still kicking around here somewhere) from the old job but they took away all of our phones and shortly thereafter laid everyone off. I now have my own phone. But you're lucky to have a phone from work. I just get a check for $40 every month for mine.
The handsfree charger puts more current into the battery than the overnight travel charger because it's a "rapid" charger. Also, on my typical drives I don't drive enough to charge the phone fully. Not charging the battery fully then discharging isn't good for it and shortens battery life. I don't spend most of my time near a charger or in the car so I need to have good battery life :).
Of course YMMV, I have a motorola, you have a Kyocera, they are different phones. I had an old qualcomm QCP-820 before it was traded up for an LG V111 in 2001.
ssjones 03-27-2005, 09:19 AM I have a Motorola, battery life in general doesn't seem to be it's strong suit!

That's true. Moto hasn't really impressed me recently, and I've been a moto user since my first phone which was a TeleTAC 250.
Their strong suit seems to be the car kits and ruggedness of their phones. Most of their phones are tough as nails! The T720 seemed to be a cheap piece of junk though. But the V710 (Verizon issues aside) is a pretty good phone.
Battery life tends to be dependent on a number of things. If you're in an area with analog coverage only, the battery life is going to be severely diminished. Firmware also affects battery life. In my V710, with the newer firmware (1.40.OR) the battery life is much less than the old version (1.30.8F).
