So I didnt get the navi with the car the dealer stumbled across this one and I just took it. My question is can the navi unit be purchased from honda? If it can be is it a tough install? Am I better off getting an portable gps? I kinda like the functionality honda has with their system...

Jason,

Get a portable unit. The integration of the factory unit is nice but I have it in my Ody and I prefer the portable unit for several reasons. There is more information available, better maps, higher resolution screen, and more flexibility to mention a few. I don't think you can retrofit the factory anyway.

I got a nice Garmin for about 300 bucks, I think its much better then paying an extra couple of grand for the intergrated navi.

If the decision was OEM NAVI vs handheld before the car purchase, I would say get the factory unit. But since we're talking a retro fit, get the handheld.

The conversion has been done before but its much more complicated than people think. Its not just dropping in a new headunit. There are wiring harnesses from the ceiling to the rear deck to accommodate all of the bits and pieces. And with the newest Accords, it would also involve adding a separate CD changer in the center console. Non-NAVI models have the changer integrated into the dash. NAVI units have a separate CD Changer in the center console.

Also, for full functionality with the 2008 NAVI, a separate Bluetooth control unit would have to be added as well.

Purchasing NAVI after the fact, definitely go with a handheld.

Thanks for the responses guys!!! So it can be done but its gonna cost me like 4g's. For that kinda money ill just go fully custom. I already have an alpine touch screen unit left over from a s2k project, actually thinking about it, that screen may fit where the factory radio screen is. Hmmm.....now the wheels are turning....

Your gonna have to wait for a KIT to be made for the accord to install that aftermarket Head unit and make it look right. Gonna be a mission otherwise.

Garmin nuvi 650 or 680 (bluetooth) FTW~!~

Costco has the 650 on sale for 299$ ...thats a great price considering they were like 459$ a couple months back

Entry level units are alright, but u just don't get the 4.3" screen or as many features as well at POI's if you go for the sub 200$ units.

wow $1700 just for the parts plus his time for install....so thats....around 7 hours for install (he claimed half a day)...a shop would charge around $85 an hour...thats $1700 + $600 for labor....$2300 total vs a cheaper solution....i know which one I would have picked...the return on investment for that is not worth it haha

I got the 650 when Costco had it on sale last time, and I love it. While it would've been nice to have Bluetooth, I just couldn't pass the 650 up for $300. I just wish there was a way to hardwire the power, as I hate having cords running to the cigarette power adapters; I wired in my radar detector and the kids' DVD player, and it makes for a much cleaner-looking interior. I haven't seen any hardwire kits for the Garmins, though.

I was looking into hardwiring my Garmin 250w.
Why wouldn't these work?

Y'know, looking at those, I don't see why they wouldn't. :)

The first one is weird, though. It says that it uses the "standard connection," but that's not what's reflected in the picture. It's not uncommon for sellers to have a generic picture with their auctions, though, so it's probably a non-issue.

I bought my Garmin from costco also when it was on sale. I cut the cigarette plug off and hardwired it behind the lighter. Done deal! Works great.
