View Full Version : 2008 Accord Coupe EX-L V-6 HFP Wheels
Honda offers and 18" HFP wheel (PSX-9) as an accessory. The dealer tells me that Honda requires a 225/45R18 95Y tire by Yokohama for this wheel. The OEM tire for this car is a Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 size 235/45VR18. Noone from any Honda dealership can explain to me why. Some say the tire is required while others say it is recommended. The OEM wheel is 18x8. Noone can tell me the width of the HFP wheel. Tire Rack does not know the width of the HFP wheel. They tell me that the difference in height of the sidewall between the two tires is 3/10's of an inch. One dealer told me that I would have to sign a release if I wanted the HFP wheel with the OEM tire. Any enlightment would be appreciated.

Litigation happy U.S.A., that's most likely why.
225 and 235 wideth tires are so close that you should not have any problems unless the HFP wheels are only 6" wide.
I currently have 225 wide tires on 6.5" wide rims, no issues what-so-ever, so I can't see why 235 width tires wouldn't fit on an HFP rim that is likely at least 7.5" wide, if not 8" wide.
Which leads me to speculate that the dealership is simply protecting themselves against ANY possible litigation or complaints from you in the future, such that they would be able to say "Mr. J-Ro, we are very sorry but you signed the release, so it doesn't matter if the tire took on an octagon shape overnight, we are not responsible and cannot help you!"

x10 what Aviography said. They're just protecting themselves against any liability concerns. Rims can usually take a variety of different sizes within reason.
Besides safety, using an improperly sized tire can affect the speedometer/odometer calibration. Keep in mind Honda was hit with a lawsuit because some models had odometers that were off by 3%. Long term, that can mean the true mileage of your car is off by thousands of miles. In reality while negligible, in can be a sore spot if warranty work is denied due to mileage.

I am currently running 225/50/18 ! Fills the fenders well and does not rub. I do understand my speedo will be a little of thou :)

Try contacting collegehillshonda.com. They usually have this kind of information handy. In the meantime, I'll try to ask a friend of mine who'd probably know.

I think that recommendation 225/45 18 is only for models not equipped with standard 18" wheels , see installation instructions

My guess that is main reason, as it depends on how they read VSS and head uint.
I did some rough math on varius tire sizes to tire overall dia (this is just approx as each manufacture can vary a bit)
tire, side wall dim, side wall 2x, add 2s side wall+wheel, total dia
215/60/16=215*0.60=5.12inch=10.24+ 16= 26.24 DIA
225/50/17= 225*0.5= 4.46inch=8.93+ 17= 25.93 DIA
225/45/18= 225*0.45= 4.019inch= 8.039= 26.03 DIA
235/45/18 =235*0.45= 4.19inch= 8.396+ 18= 26.39 DIA

To answer your question about the HFP wheel, the PSX-9 (and RGR-16D for anyone wondering) is 18" x 7.5". Both have a +55 offset. Either tire will work for you, but I'd go with the 235 personally.
Thanks everyone for your assistance.
