View Full Version : Please help me I've 4 problems in my 1999 Accord
mendione 02-05-2008, 07:02 AM Thank you very much to this Accord community for let me in and share with you experience with this car, although this time I am kind asking you for help on 4 problems that my Honda Accord 1999, 49.000 miles, 4 Cyl, 2.3lts, 4drs, has. Here are the problems:
Problem #1: The brake lights does not work at all. As tailgate lights, all the lights works perfectly but once I step my foot on the brake pedal, nothing happens, there is no change in the red light intensity of all rear red lights. The car has a spoiler as well with builtin 3rd stop led's lights and this 3rd stop on this spoiler refuse to work completly as well. What is the troubleshooting guide here? Believe that the fuse is good to go. Where else to look and how?
Problem #2: The rear window defogger works partially. Only 3 lines works and very slow. The rest of the lines are refusing to work at all. The only 3 lines that work - slowly but work - are located in the uper part of the window. The activation switch including the relay are working since there is the power on light and I can hear the relay when I activate it, also the automatic deactivation works perfectly since it turn off automatically. What is the troubleshooting guide here?. Where else to look and how?
Problem #3: The light for the LCD clock on the dash board and also for the LCD odometer on the panel, below the speedometer are not working. At night, I cannot see the time by looking at the clock but also I cannot see the miles by looking at the odometer. The rest of the lights on the entirely vehicle works perfectly. What is the troubleshooting guide here?. Where else to look and how?
Problem #4: The power steering pump is leaking fluid. I can tell just by looking at it. It is full stained and dirty, but I regularily check the fluid level and it is within the normal levels. Is there is a way to service this pump or it is better to replace it?. What is the troubleshooting guide here?. Where else to look and how?
I want to thank you all for your help - in advanced - kindly. Thank you.
Manuel M
Welcome to the board.
A few suggestions and I'm sure others will add:
1 - Assuming the bulbs are OK, you mentioned the LED light does not come on so I would say the brake switch is out of adjustment or needs replacing. The switch is located under the dash at the top of the pedal. There should be a nut or two to adjust the switch.
2 - Inspect the rear defroster lines for scratches. Over time as the window is cleaned, the lines get taken off. As they wear away, performance decreases. I've had success with repair kits.
3 - Do a search for clock bulb replacement. There are a number of threads describing how to replace the bulb. Its most likely a bulb for the odometer also.
4 - Not sure about the pump. Depends on where its leaking. If the levels are normal, are you sure its the power steering fluid that is leaking?

the clock light has been on here many times. It's common for that year.:D
mendione 02-05-2008, 01:31 PM Just to thank you guys for your suport and advices. I will keep you posted as soon as I take the car to the Honda shop and telling them what my friends from DriveHonda told me.
One last, how I can find the defogger repair kit? where I can buy it?
Regarding the pump, yes indeed it is the steering pump, but my solution will be to buy a new pump. Period.
I have been reading in this forum about 6th gen or 7th gen (generation) Honda's vehicle. I am wondering what generation is my 1999 Accord?
Thank you all again. Wishing you the best of the best in everything

Accordlover 02-05-2008, 02:00 PM 6th generation. 1998-2002

mendione 02-05-2008, 06:06 PM One question.. or coment:
Where I can find, beside here in this prestigious forum and community, a copy of the flowchart to follow on how to fix the LCD clock and odometer light problem?
I am also wondering about this case as an example:
"The problem is electrical, and the problem was located in the wiring. How can be fixed a wiring problem since determine where in the wire is the problem? Replacing the whole harness can be more than tedious plus expensive like nothing else. I meani is there is a problem with ground contact, it can be almost imposible to determine which cable is short circuiting, right? If so, how to fix that?
Thank you so much for your always professional comments, help suggestions and answers.

It's so common, that it's a sticky!!:)
The 2008 is the first year of the 8th gen.
They used to change every 4 years, then messed that up with the '02... they seemed to delay releasing the '03 body by a year. It has been body every 4, with a drivetrain change the alternate 4.

mendione 02-05-2008, 08:03 PM Thank you so much for oriented me, directed me to the right forum about the replacement of the backlight for the clock. Thank you so much for this.
I know that I am asking too much and too often:lmao:, and please accept my apologize for this. One more question, please: The Odometer also has the same back light problem, can you please direct me or oriented me to the right forum thread for changing/replacing the bulb for the odometer?
In advanced, thank you so much again.

mendione 02-08-2008, 05:50 PM My Dearest Accord community:
I have a question, actually is a curiosity and will surely will find the answer here. I live and my Accord as well in a tropical country. Temperature here is around the same all year around, between 25 ~27 centigrades. But since we are still in February, temperatures somtimes drops energically. 3 'o clock in the morning easy can go down as low as +10 centigrades. Yes always plus, not minus. Ok, I notice that my Accord takes some big time to increase the engine temp, menaing to go to the normal temp (which I don't know in centigrades or F which is - numerically talking) The bottomline is that this temp gauge with its needles moves a lot, from 0 to whatever the normal temp is, and if I am driving it down in a slope for some considerable amount of time, I can see the temp right on 0 again.
I hope you followed me. Questions like: is this normal? what is happening here? to worry? These questions are naturally arise.
Thank you all for eveything guys

princess 02-08-2008, 07:54 PM sounds like a thermostat stuck open.
mendione 02-09-2008, 04:19 AM Dear Princess:
thx u very much for your answer. You know? I also suspected about it. But, tell me something, since "we" live in the middle of the tropic, with high 20's temperature all year around and the traffic in the city is bumper-to-bumper all day (yes I also know that you are asking how in this world somebody livedin a city like that:)) is there any harm to the engine leaving it like this with the termostat stucked openly? Should I let the termostat like ths?
thank you Princess once again. and as you said... "I kinda like this place"

princess 02-09-2008, 09:24 AM Eventually it will damage the CAT, the computer that controls the emissions parts won't be happy. Not going through the normal phases of "warm up" allows excess fuel into the emissions system. You will probably notice a decrease in gas mileage.
The thermostat is a cheap part & may pay for itself pretty quickly in fuel costs.:)
Your climate sounds heavenly to me!!:D
mendione 02-09-2008, 09:40 AM I will follow your advice. I will take the car to an Honda dealer and tell then to check the thermostat. It is a common practice in this latitudes due to the severe traffic all day long and in summer very high temperatures to eliminate the thermostat. Reading your advice, it makes strong sense, hence I will follow it.
My new avatar is when I was working for NOKIA in Tahiti... No, it is not, I was joking :lmao:.
Definitively, this is the only and only place wheras an Honda owner must go... and stay, by the way.
Princess... and all these respectable community you guys are my heros, no questions about it!
Take care y'all

Ralph 08-30-2009, 12:13 PM I LOVE those instructions for the odometer light replacement. At the risk of showing my age, it reminds me of Steve Martin. "You too can be a millionaire and live a life of luxury. How you may ask? Well, first, getamilliondollars. NOW...
1. Remove the instrument panel.
2. Remove the screws (A) from the gauge assembly (B), and spread a protective cloth (C) on the upper column cover.
3. Disconnect the connectors (D), and remove the gauge assembly.
4. Install in the reverse order of removal.
SO, can anyone tell me how to remove the instrument panel? Thanks!
cajun 08-30-2009, 01:35 PM SO, can anyone tell me how to remove the instrument panel? Thanks!
Yes, those instructions and Steve Martin's line are priceless. :D
I changed mine a few months ago. Wardenr did it as well, and I think we wrote a few notes about it in a thread. Search for that. Now going by memory...look up at the bezel and you'll see a couple of screws - remove those. Lower the steering column.
Now comes the fun part. The top of the bezel will be loose, but the bottom is still attached to a couple of weak plastic tabs. The instructions I read said that you could insert a small screwdriver near the tabs to loosen them. I tried this for a while, gave up, figured I'd just go buy a new bezel if needed, and gave it a good pull. Mine came out unbroken, but I've seen a lot of posts in which a tab broke when someone tried the yank-that-sucker-out method. I think wardenr said he paid ~$30 for a new/OEM one. Once you get that out out you should be able to follow Honda's instructions.
wardenr 08-30-2009, 06:30 PM Ralph:
I strongly ditto with Cajun.
The PITA part is disconnecting the lower plastic (extruded) "posts," attached to the dash via folded, spring clips. I broke both "posts" off, necessitating replacement of the bezel. But when installing my new bezel, I left the spring clips off, instead slipping a small section of plastic tubing over each post, to create an "interference" fit. Makes next-time removal a "piece of cake" for subsequent bulb replacement.
In the case you break one/both "posts," you can always trim them off with a blade. The bezel fits very tight, with only the top (two) Phillips-head screws to secure it. :)
