Basis for recall:

August 4, 2004

Honda is facing a federal safety investigation and the potential recall of 240,193 of its 2004 Accord sedans after the driver's airbag failed during two crash tests.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began the inquiry last week after airbags failed during unrelated tests. The agency was testing the damage caused when light trucks crash into cars from the side. During the side-impact test, the Accord airbag failed.

Investigators said the bag had a large tear in its fabric and did not fully inflate.

NHTSA has opened an inquiry, which is the first step in the process that can lead to a ful-scale recall.

From NHTSA site:

Make : HONDA Model : ACCORD Year : 2005
Manufacturer : AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 04V551000 Recall Date : NOV 17, 2004
Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 257616
Summary:
ON CERTAIN SEDANS, A TEAR IN THE FABRIC OF THE DRIVER'S FRONT AIR BAG OCCURRED AFTER APPARENT CONTACT WITH THE INSIDE SURFACE OF THE AIR BAG COVER DURING DEPLOYMENT.
Consequence:
A TORN AIR BAG MAY NOT OFFER THE SAME LEVEL OF PROTECTION, IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE DRIVER.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A PROTECTIVE FABRIC FLAP BETWEEN THE AIR BAG MODULE COVER AND THE INNER MODULE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON DECEMBER 6, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009.
Notes:
HONDA RECALL NO. P54. CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION’S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

should i be "proud" that i got to test this in a real world scenario and mine worked???

the side airbag worked in my 04 coupe when i was hit on the side by pickup trucks!! i can attest to that one. guess i should be glad i have a coupe and not a sedan! yet one more thing ot be thankful for after that accident! :)

of course i guess i would never know if it inflated fully or not..... but it definitely spared me injury! ;)

Am I reading this right? Does this only affect the 4 cylinder Accords?

As of now, yep! They have different parts in them, so it would make sense for a 4 only or a 6 only..... we'll see later if they determine the parts in the 6's need changing too!

There's a stop selling order on the ones affected, just like they did with the tranny thing....which means the ones coming from the factory will already be updated.

Several manufacturers have gone through this. My only surprise is that normally Honda finds them BEFORE any pther agency... that could mean that in real life they haven't failed, but did on those crash tests. The other airbag thing...on the Pilots were discovered by Hondas first. They keep testing after they're on the market & decided they could get even better timing on them. Not a failure thing, just fine tuned it a bit better!:)

the memo sent to dealers....

oh yeah, there's one on Civics made in England too. There's only 145 of the models though. They put a list of not only which cars, but which dealers they went to! Pretty cool!

weird....they said it failed in a side impact test, so why are they repairing the front airbag? shouldnt it be the side or side curtain?

Thank you Princess for posting the dealer memos so quickly...my roommate saw a little blurb and was very worried because he didn't understand what they meant...I emailed him a link to the service bulletin, and he calmed down once he saw what was going on.

I dropped my car off this am at my dealer to have them fix a seatbelt rattle...they are also taking care of my airbag today, they already have the parts in to do it! I thought that was very cool, saves me another trip. And the letters haven't even gone out yet.
