Nice HT setup piturra   Bet the JBL's sound sweet
And Welcome to the Forum

Thanks Inspector1!!! My JBL S26's design roots comes from JBL TEC Award winning PRO LSR Studio Monitor's (LSR25). Harmond International built a blind-testing room called the Multichannel Listening Lab (MLL) and the following was written by Scott Wilkinson for Electronic Musician ...

OBJECTIVE SUBJECTIVITY (http://industryclick.com/magazinearticle.asp?releaseid=6742&magazinearticleid=111369&siteid=15)
By Scott Wilkinson / Electronic Musician, Jul 1, 2001

"During a recent visit with several other audio journalists, I participated in a sample test run in the MLL, which was conducted by Sean Olive, manager of subjective evaluation for Harman International. Three consumer speakers were mounted behind the grille cloth: a Boston Acoustics CR8, a B&W DM601, and a JBL S26. At the end of the testing, we learned that most of us had ranked the JBL S26 as the best speaker on most clips ..."

Rounding out the FULL DD/DTS-5.1/6.1 Cinema Theater Impact was buying the SVS 25-31PCi sub (http://www.geocities.com/p_iturra/svsw.gif). Once I REFERENCED Calibrated my HT setup, the SVS seamlessly adds the floor, couch, chair, wall, air and pant-leg(s) (@ all my seating locations) moving LFE sub-sonic impacts in my 20' x 30' HT/family room when the encoded LFE calls for it in the movie!!! (Pearl Harbor; Master and Commander; Spiderman; Tomorrow Never Dies; etc.)

I quit buying DVD's 6 months ago since HD-DVD is just around the corner so I'm holding out and rent a few now and then and get the rest from the Library.
We have not been watching to many DVD's lately with the end of the season for Network and Baseball .. ESPNHD :notworthy :notworthy   ..

I1 :)

My DVD collecting habits have slowed down a bit since 1998, but there are some DVD's that I must add to my library.

I originally started just getting DD-5.1, later DTS-5.1 DVD's for my library and renting the other's w/Dolby Pro Surround or Mono soundtracks, but with some of the latest digitally restored legacy classic movie catalog releases (Errol Flynn; etc.), it's easy to justify the purchase!

I'm fortunate enough (wife approval) to host a once or twice a month Friday NITE DVD presentation with family and friends - since 1998, ... so I'll watch the HD-DVD progress for a year or so, time basically to iron out the issues & compatibilities.

This Friday NITE DVD = The Phantom of the Opera (2005)

I waited about 1-1/2 years before I decided to get DVD's. I never bought into Laser Disc's (though someone gave me a Pioneer Laser Disc Player w/27 Movie Laser Disc's) because of the cost and time limitation! I could not see myself, ... flipping the Laser Disc every 45 to 50 min's!!! :thumbsdow

I1, that's very "purdy"! Betcha these dogs could have it all gone in a week! I no longer have lawn in the back. They ended that. They ate another pond pump. They stomped a few more plants that looked like they had survived! Trinity will be getting another home in a few days. She's going back to where she was raised. Brownie will be moving with the kids in a month or so. They're getting all settled first. Ours haven't been the problem...... so maybe I'll have grass again!

Hopefully ours won't eat the new BBQ cover! I think I'll spray it with "doggy NO" before I put it out there!

Grass doesn't die here in winter either, mostly it doesn't like to grow. When you get a lawn most of it just becomes brown. Wish that we had good enough weather for me to be able to go outside on a lawn chair in the shade and read a book

It depends on if you mean 3ft without plumes or with plumes.
Most grasses add about 12-24 inches when they put on plumes in the fall.
Also what USDA hardiness zone are you in ?

I read this thread with alot of intrest a few weeks ago.

I have my computers and fish tanks as hobbys.

But I really enjoyed following wardsweb ramblings.

High end Audio and Video was a addiction of mine afew years ago. Have owned mac's, carver, polk, adcon, bristol, crown, hk, planer, klipsh horns and on and on. I had at one point over 80k in quality used equitment scattered about the house and in storage. Did alot of in box with paper work used buy and sells.

But anyway. My mother called this week and said she wanted to get rid of her old carver "the receiver". As a old carver fan and this being one of his first components widely ave. I asked if she would send it to me. Hope this dosent start a new round of audio addiction. As Im quite happy with my sony es receiver, dvd, vcr, polk m4's and 3's with cs100 center all backed with a m&k mx100 sub. Thump is still in the house :)

I dont want to start busting up windows and plaster in the house again,, and the sandstone foundation took a beating from my custom mounted voice of the theater woofer mounter in the crawl space under the house facing up throw the old floor furnace opening :screwy:

Ok we all like cars, what else are you into?

My wife and I are big Clive Cussler's fans, ... so it's no surprize that after seeing "Sahara" last April in the Theater, ... I was looking forward to the DVD release which happened today - August 30, 2005! Definitely will sound better on my HT!!!

So I got mine @ Best Buy w/Bonus DVD (details below)

Widescreen DVD SPECIAL FEATURES:
- Commentaries by Director Breck Eisner and Actor/Executive Producer Matthew McConaughey
- 3 Featurettes
.... Across the Sands of Sahara
.... Visualizing Sahara
.... Cast and Crew Wrap Film
- Deleted Scenes (w/optional audio commentary)
- Widescreen Version Enhanced for 16:9 TVs
- Dolby Digital
.... English 5.1*** & 2.0Surround
.... French 2.0 Surround

BONUS DVD - 20 mins. Full Screen ;)
- Making of the Camel Chase Scene
- 2 Animatics Sequences
- Storyboard-to-Movie Comparisons

***I will force-ON the Matrix 6.1 mode to add more rear center channel separation - in most blockbuster DVD's, the DD/DTS-5.1 surround mixes, .... identical Right & Left Surround INFO moves solidly to the Rear Center Channel speakers completing the full-360-degree surround sound effects!!!a

This Friday NITE DVD = "Sahara", ... party of about 1/2-dozen or more family & friends - w/snacks & frosty margarita's served! :naughty:

Should be glorious on my (AVIA/Digital Video Essentials DVD) Video Calibrated Toshiba 50" 16:9 HDTV & REFERENCED (Dolby Labs DD-EX 6.1) Audio Calibrated JBL S-Series 6.1 / SVS HT setup!!! :)

He pre-ordered ours from Best Buy....they're sending it.... so we'll get it eventually!!

Your gonna' love the DVD picture and DD-5.1 surround mix!!!

My Yamaha RX-V1300 is setup to playback DD-EX & DTS Discreet/Matrix 6.1 surround effects ... so, since it's a common practice for owner's of 6.1/7.1 AV REC/AMPs to Force-ON** the Matrix 6.1 Mode w/DD/DTS-5.1 Blockbuster DVD's, ... that's what I did w/"Sahara" to take advantage of the Rear Center Channel speakers!

Otherwise, w/DD/DTS-5.1 DVD's, the Rear Center Channels is silence, whereas, ... Forcing-ON** the Matrix 6.1 Mode will ... take identical encoded 5.1 R&L Side Channel INFO and usually route it to the Rear Center Channel Speakers.

"Sahara" DD-5.1 sound is predominantly mixed nicely in the Front R/C/L Channels with excellent seamless panning <Right >< Center >< Left> sound(s) directionality that matches the on-screen activity! The Side Rear Channels are utilized sparingly to add to the big on-screen overall action scene's and adds some unobtrusive sound effects that puts you into the moment, ... **i.e. when the Texas Captain order's the engines stopped, ... the return cannon firing stopped (close the covers), ... and ... while the camera pans to the different sailor's inside the Texas, the exploding cannon-balls and shrapnel sound surrounds you. Adding the Rear Center Channel speakers helps centralized some sounds directly behind you adding a complete 360-degree surround effects!!! Far superior vs. what is produced by the Side R & L Channels as a phantom center! The "Sahara" surround sound mix does not disappoint!!! :D

I REFERENCE Calibrate my JBL S-Series & SVS 25-31PCi power sub using Dolby Labs DD-EX 6.1 and dedicated LFE (low frequency effects channel) test tones.

At -10 dB below REF Level (approx. 106 dBc of Fast LFE SPL peaks) , you can feel the impact, ... [possible spoiler] of the exploding cannon balls, Sandecker's speed-boat/yacht, dynamite thrown by Eva, & General Kazim helicopter, ... in the couch, floor, walls, air and pant-legs (SVS trait)!!!  Definitely more satisfying than our April / "Sahara" Theater experience!!!

I watched "Sahara" DVD twice already and plan to watch it again later tonight!!! Just making final adjustments before my Friday NITE DVD "Sahara" party!!!

We also normally enjoy movies even better at home over the theaters. Comfier & I like to feel the bass, not just hear it!

When we saw Sahara at the theater we didn't get to finish it. Our daughter called.... that was the weekend she miscarried the last babies. He's read it, of course....but not me. I'm looking forward to seeing the whole thing.

Our Brenden Theater has a problem room....#4's bass speakers pop & crackle...not a good experience! 4 of the last 5 movies we saw there were in that room! I wish they posted which one they are in with the movie times!

Is that the "floating" flooring? A buddy did their entry, kitchen, diningroom, hall & office 2 years ago. It's really pretty! They had deep teal plush carpet all over & now it's only in the livingroom. The wood really freshened up the house. Their's is a ranch style that's nearly 4K sf. This year they're redoing most of the outside. Now the front porch is the whole front with tile.

Inspector1
11-17-2005, 05:17 AM
Actually it can be installed 4 ways(float, glue, nail or staple)
It is not like Pergo or the other composite style floors.
It is called engineered flooring, 5 layers of wood with grain in opposite direction for each level. That prevents the expansion and contraction found in solid wood floors. It is 9/16" thick and can be sanded and refinished just like solid wood. One nice aspect is the finish layer on top can be screened once and refinished without going with the heavy sander.

I purchased on the internet and saved almost 1500.00 compared with buying local.

I1 :)

Heres a side view of the layers.. (manufacturer is Mannington)

princess
11-17-2005, 07:40 AM
I think hers is a pergo or something like that...it's laminated. They installed it on green sheets of stuff. I wasn't there, but I saw the piles of supplies before they got started on it.

Our old house has actual oak hard wood floors in all but the baths & kitchen. We left it exposed in only 2 bedrooms. They need to be sanded & recoated....maybe after the grandkids are grown! Some of our neighbors have either had theirs redone or refurbished & they look very pretty. I grew up with hardwood floors & prefer carpet. I love how they look, I just like the feel of carpet on my normally bare toes. :D

Sounds like an awful lot of work!!! Are you going to have the kids help?

You took all those???? Some look like you must have been in a helocopter!!

I took them over the last 3 years, no helocopters though just climbing and not being afraid to walk to the edge :D

Poor man's camera, well compared to the ones that cost 3-4 times as much. I use an olympus 3.2 megapixel digital I think the serial is D-560 here in the US.

Oh, that wood floor looks WONDERFUL!!!!!!

We're still on the old craftsmen compressor from 15 or 20 years ago!! It's about the same size as yours only not upright. It's inside a garage cubboard. It was used by LONG hoses to the back of the house when we redid the bedroom.

A few years back (now remember it was used for 3 hours a day almost daily during sidework years) it got a hole in the tank. WAAAAY down on the bottom. He patched it by threading in a screw.....planning to replace it. Well, the screw is still holding....& he hasn't replaced it yet!! :lmao:

Luckily I don't usually get paint on the floor or places it would be hard to clean...mostly just on myself...

...not sure how I overlooked this interesting thread, but as for what other things I'm into other than my car...take a look at my user name...that's correct, I chase trains, both the real thing and the HO scale variety. I am an avid railfan and model railroader, been afflicted with this almost since birth. You can't imagine how many hours my Hondas have spent beside some railroad track waiting for something interesting to come down the track...I'm also a professional photographer and many of the train pics I take make it into publication, doesn't make me a whole lot of dough, the wedding business actually pays the bills, but taking photos of trains is a lot more fun...at least it is to me...

As a teen I dated a "trainchaser".....he'd loved to sit by tracks for hours watching them go by. He kept a note book & wrote down the numbers of certain ones. At least taking pictures of them would seem more interesting to me.... :lmao: Never quite understood the fascination. :dunno: I may have to learn more about it since the youngest grandson has a passion for them now!!

I1-- The last picture looks amazing! I love the color, and the floor..
I have a soft spot for hardwood. Weve had it in all of our houses, and i cant imagine not having it..

Did i ever tell you that im from cincinnati?

We lived in Amelia back in the early-mid 90's, then we moved to Hyde park until 01.. Then my parents moved here to Harrisburg

My mom worked at Deaconess Hospital and my stepdad has always worked for orkin pest control, and his old office was in fairfield.. So thats my old "Stomping ground" I guess you could say..
I miss Hyde park
We lived in a huge development in Amelia, i cant remember what it was called, but it was around beechmont ford, and jeff wyler i think, and i remember going past a boat-store.. IDK.. its been awhile..

Well, I have 4 of them....& it's the youngest one that's into trains :dunno: I just got to watch Thomas AGAIN!!!! He agreed to turn that off & now he's got his latest track set out.... & putting it together in some odd way. That's Jarrison!! :D

neoflight, that's great!! My mom used to pencil pictures of the guests at my parties when I was a kid. They were always a hit...with the kids & their parents! I did a little many many many years ago..... I had a knack for art in mono-chrome. In classes others seemed to find it more difficult than color. It didn't seem to make any difference for me. :dunno:

My stuff is pretty old now...I haven't been painting much for years. I have an eagle in the familyroom that I did with my kids between me & my easel. That's about when I decided to stop. It was just too much while raising the kids! I'd end up with my 3 plus their friends between me & whatever I was working on.

When we first built our gazebo I dragged my stuff out. It sounded so heavenly to be in the wisteria shaded gazebo with my paints.....then I ended up helping raise grandkids. So I put it all away again & haven't really touched it since.

Out there somewhere are about 200 paintings on wood....like decoupage... with "clink" on them. If you ever see one...they were done in the 70's & I did them. There's also "lois" ones that my mom did during the same time frame. She kept doing them longer than me though & went on to all sorts of minitures....pheasants, victorian people, etc. They all started out still-lifes...fruit & veggies, mushrooms & mice. Very "IN" at the time. :D Each one is painted, not glued though. I think one of her brushes had 2 hairs on it!!! :lmao:

Both daughters also paint. The oldest one isn't very good though....SHE thinks she is & I guess others do too. I've not been impressed. But like me, her stuff mostly comes out of her head. The other daughter can see things & copy it. Which is how my mom has been too. Mom was always fascinated by mine coming from my head & I was about her ability to copy. One of those "grass is always greener" things!! :dunno:

My dad & grandparents were artistic....

Now I don't think my back would handle the staying in one spot very well. So maybe I'm better off leaving it alone instead of finding another thing to be frustrated about!

When I was 5, in kindergarten, my teacher made me take on of my pictures to the office. I cried. I thought I was in some sort of trouble!! Nope. I had done a picture of what I'd seen over Spring break. I saw golden fields with cows & poles that not only got smaller as they were farther away, they got lighter & each object had a light side & a shadow side. (The view was from a kid's perpective looking out a car window on Hwy.99 heading down to Anahiem) I thought EVERYONE knew about shadowing & light-sides & things far away looking smaller & fainter. It was a surprise to learn they didn't all know!

My mom loves to tell the story about when I was 6 months old & sitting in her lap in church drawing kitties & bunnies.... snowman style. Most babies would've been eating the pencil! My mom's best buddy was pushing to send me on to art schools.... didn't happen.

Anyway it's in my blood, but not a passion. To some, I'm a waste....but I've done what I wanted to do with it. I decorated my kids rooms & now they have stuff I did way back when. I've used it in other ways. :)

In people I like pencil or charcoal art the best. Kinda liks a black & white picture...they seem to have more detail. Reminds me of the look of the Ansel Adams photos.

It was dismantled & hauled to the dump....

It was fun reading this resurrected thread. Seams a lot of us have the same interests. Mine lean toward the mechanical side, I basically modify anything I have ever owned that had wheels and a motor, be it cars or motorcycles. Don't get to do as much now as I sold the bike for part of the down payment on our first house and with two rugrats underfoot I can't really get time to ride any more, can't modify the cars as much since they have to be bigger and actually have to be drivable all the time, so no breaking them at the auto-x on Sundays :naughty: . I've kept my music hobby in one way or the other through it all. Started out playing piano in elementary school, switched to trumpet in junior high and high school, read that as band geek, moved it over in to car stereo during high school which eventually became a 15 year profession and have recently moved it over in to home theater, which has become the new profession. I guess the latest hobby was sort of born out of neccessity, home remodeling. Started with our first house a few years ago, it needed a little up dating as the previous owner had been there for 27 years so things were a little old looking. Went very well as they had taken great care of the place, spent two years updating every room and expanding out the bath to included a stand alone shower with a custom pan. Finish putting the last tile in three days before we closed escrow on the sale of it. Have spent two years going through the current house and will be done with the last bathroom in a week or so and then we'll tackle the reface on the kitchen and landscaping the backyard. In between we bought a condo and cleaned it up and re-did a lot then decided it wasn't worth keeping as a rental and sold it for a good profit. We'll start on another house next year as we'll be moving closer to my wife's work and will buy a fixer upper to completely redo then move in and rent out the current house. Be nice to get to work on the house when we aren't living in it. Trying to keep the bathroom usable while your demolishing it is really interesting  .
My only other hobbies involve playing with my two girls. Of course they have me wrapped around their fingers, but that's OK. Here's a recent picture at Knott's Berry Farm of me and them.

Hadn't done much to the vehicle lately since It's always pouring, maybe this weekend I'll wash all of them. I wait till it's full blown Spring until I polish & wax all of the vehicle. How is school?
