View Full Version : Cabin rattle(buzz) from around steering column area

Anyone noticed a cabin rattle sound (small, almost like a buzz rattle ) from around the steering column ( maybe near turn-signal ? ) ? Rattle only occurs when going over rough or even pavement between 20-45mph.
Thanks.

itzdavee 03-13-2008, 04:31 PM check the cubby place, the cover that slides up and down.
that makes cute little noises. lol
koharc6161 03-14-2008, 03:19 AM i have also had a rattle like that from day 1 on my 07 v6, it comes from the casing that is right behind the steering (i.e. the signal and light controls go into it) it seems that the cover on the top and bottom is lose and not well secured.
aprayiii 03-14-2008, 04:44 AM Mine had a rattle that sounds similar that came from the airbag. You could reproduce by hitting the steering wheel at the bottom. Fixed by the dealer by taking the steering wheel apart and tightening.
sjlee 03-14-2008, 06:13 AM I have the same issue, but mine's located to the right of the steering column. I believe it's that narrow piece of plastic on the dashboard. I was going to bring it up at the dealer when I took it in for its first oil change.

thanks to all ... plan to do the same
rsh37930 03-17-2008, 09:14 PM .... one other possible cause ... I notice the rattle more when I leave the moon roof open when parked .... not sure if some hot/cols air differentiation is causing the rattle ? or something else ?

Can you provide any additionnal info on this ? Still have the dealer notes ?
I plan to take in to the dealer, and it would be nice to have something to back me up. A TSB would be wonderful, but I am not sure if one exists ?

It was about a year ago, as far as I know there is no TSB. My dealer had no issues looking for the problem probably because it was so easy to reproduce.
There is another active thread on this same issue, see http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11161

Yep, I found that thread last night. My rattle is very noticable when hitting slightly rough road ( not significant bumps ). However, sometimes I hear it other times not ( maybe temperature related ). Yes, I can reproduce with a tap on the steering wheel, but it's not as noticable.
Thanks !!

believe it or not, I actually found an old(2001) thread regarding this issue
[ http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7609 ]. In fact, there is a 2001 TSB [ 01 airbag 01-018.pdf ]. So, I guess the big question is - Is it possible that a 2001 TSB issue could still make it's way to a 2007 model ???? :dunno:
rsh37930 03-27-2008, 12:12 PM ok ... I've checked all the threads I am aware of, and I've got 4 possible causes -
- airbag mounting
- horn connector at hub of steering wheel
- plastic wiring harness behind airbag
- tilt-telescope lever
I plan to take into the dealer within ~2k miles for oil change. Until then, I am taking votes from the forum on what is determined :D
[a] airbag mounting
[b] horn connector at hub of steering wheel
[c] plastic wiring harness behind airbag
[d] tilt-telescope lever
[e] dealer cannot determine, no action

As I said previously, I have the same problem. It's weird that we only hear it when going over uneven pavement... not when going over bumps.
The sound seems to be coming from the dash area round the steering column... which probably means that it is none of the above things. My guess is that it is a problem with the dashboard pieces needing some insulation.

yep, same here. It's definetly hard to say 100%, but it certainly sounds like something in-around the steering wheel/column area. It seems to be temperature related. As in, if I leave the moon-roof open, a temp imbalance in the cabin makes it most noticable. unbelievable really. My prev car -- 94 Corolla -- developed some rattles -- _after_ 150K -- so I am somewhat surprised to hear cabin rattles at 20k.
All in all, I am somewhat pleased with my 07 Accord after one year -- getting more used to it. Certainly, my Honda dealer service has been above average, so that's good -- hope it keeps up.
But I certainly wonder about some issues that appear to be related to assembly.

ok ... update on this ... went to the dealer y'day, as one would expect, rattle was not audible while at the dealer, dealer took out airbag and inspected, found nothing loose, so we put another mark next to the crazy customer list :) ( not a good start to the day ) .... later y'day night, as would expect again, rattle is loud and clear. However, this time I notice my rattle is most audible when tapping the left-side of the wheel, not the bottom as others mentioned on this thread. The rattle(buzz) sound appears to be emanating from around the wheel area(left) where the radio control buttons (i.e. 'Volume', 'Channel', etc..) are.
Appreciate any more info anybody has on this. Any official Honda info would be great.
