hey so i have been a life time windows user, and have used a mac a few times.
so i dual booted my laptop with xp, and Ubuntu, i had no problems on the install, but now i am trying to use Linux for the first time, and it is not going so well...
i am confused as he!! when it comes to installing programs, at least aircrack-ng...

anyone else on here use Linux? if so do you have any good tips about using it.
i consider myself very knowledgeable when it comes to windows, and computers, and i have even built a few from scratch, so i know what i am doing, but like i said Linux is just confusing me, maybe because it is late, i will try to install aircrack-ng tomorrow, and see if i have any better luck.

if i still can't get it then i guess i need to start with easer softwhere, and work my way up.:dunno:

I don't really use the gui when using Linux. I tend to do everything from the command line. Most variants of Linux will be very command line friendly, and becoming comfortable with a terminal shell will become your best friend.

In terms of installing programs, there are two common ways to do it. One is to use executables (which type is dependent on the linux distribution). Another is to build the program from the source code.

Which way are you trying to use?

For Ubuntu, use the Synaptic Package Manager to install most programs. You mark a package for install, then Apply the changes.

Or, use an executable. I rarely have to compile from source.

We use Ubuntu at home on both the laptop (dual boot with XP) and our Mythtv box for dvr purposes.

Steve,

What version of Ubuntu?
I am using 7.10 - updated today.
I just checked my Synaptic Manager and it does show aircrack and aircrack-ng
