POINT RICHMOND, CA (KGO) -- A Point Richmond man is turning 100 years old today, but you'd never know it. The centenarian daredevil plans to make sure this will be a birthday for the record books.
He is not going to let his age slow him down one bit. He is going to top his 100th birthday by going 100 mph, in a car and then on a boat, and he is hoping it will all be captured by the Guinness Book of World Records.
"I said sure I'll do it," said Gordon Miller, turning 100.
It wasn't Gordon Miller's idea to go 100 mph on his 100th birthday. And it certainly isn't his wife's idea of a good, safe plan.
"I'll be very happy when it's over," said Margaret Miller, Gordon's wife.
This idea came from their youngest son Fred and it was Fred who motivated Margaret to give the stunt her approval.
"I thought I'm not going to disappoint Fred if he wanted to do it," said Margaret Miller, Gordon's wife.
"It's a little selfish because it's a little bit for me too here, but I know he can do it, so we can do this together," said Fred Miller, Gordon's son.
And so father and son will get in Fred's Lexus and take it to 100 mph on a private road in Discovery Bay. And then they'll climb on board a friend's catamaran and cruise across the San Joaquin River at 100 mph. They can do it because even at 100-years-old, Gordon still has a driver's license and he still sails.
"I've never driven a boat 100 mph, but I think I hit 100 mph in my old Ford station wagon some years ago," said Gordon Miller.
Gordon says he's lived such a long, healthy life because of his happy marriage; he and Margaret have been together for 63 years. He also thinks his sailing hobby has kept him going. He's been sailing on the Bay for 74 years and still takes monthly cruises to Angel Island with the Richmond Island's Geritol Lunch Bunch. Fred said he is looking forward to getting his father into the record books.
"I just thought that no one has ever done this and so we contacted Guinness Book of Records and we have been back and forth with them, and when it's all done, we'll send them the final results," said Fred Miller.
Margaret is just looking forward to hugging them both when they get back on land.
"I've always been a worrier and so I always have to worry twice as much as everybody else does," said Margaret Miller.
"She's given in, not really with pressure, but you know we wanted to do it," said Fred Miller.
There is a big party scheduled for after. When Gordon was asked how he would top it for his 101st birthday - he just smiled and said 'I just take it one day at a time.'
