hey, i just bought a new 2008 accord coupe, ex-l, 4cylinder, with polished metal metallic, black interior. My question is, how should i handle this coupe? i have about 850 miles on it, but im really paranoid ill drive it too hard.
This car is supposed to last me atleast 7 years. I heard that your not really supposed to push it above 3,000 rpm for the first 2000 miles, is this true?
I need some honda experts to help me out cuz i love this car and am getting paranoid about doing any damage to the engine.
thanks
You have plenty of miles on it already... drive it and enjoy!
I think the manual :deal:says 600 miles. I went to 800 before I lit it up. :dude:

haha yeah, ive had for about 2 weeks, and recently drove it about 400 miles in one day, i had to go on a day trip, and really wanted to drive my car, it rode beautifully. im just scared ill beat up the engine too much if i push it too hard, anyone else got any suggestions as to how i should handle it? i try to keep it below 3000 rpm when i drive, but sometimes i cant help it if the weathers nice out.

if you went on a 400 mile trip and didnt vary your rpms, give it more time to break in with more city driving.

As a general rule, I usually wait until at least 1500 miles on any car to go above 3000 rpms.
It is hard to do, especially with the way gas is now. I used to just drive around for about 2 weeks until I did hit 1500 miles....lol.

There are a variety of different opinions on this. As long as you don't red-line frequently in the first 1K, or use cruise control on a daily basis, you should be fine. Varying RPM does help to brake the engine in.
mike.
I am of the mindset that you seat the rings and after that it's all golden. It's okay to do hard accelerations, just don't tap up against the redline until you gotten a little more mileage on her.
In essence there is a soft break in and a hard break in... I do hard break ins

okay, yeah ive been trying to drive it around the city a bit more and its alot of fun. anyone have any suggestions as to how i should treat the engine after its broken in? i never red line an engine but is it okay to rev the engine? does that accelerate the wear and tear of the engine?

After 1k miles drive it however you like. Keeping the RPMS down all the time can cause carbon build up, so pushing it isn't going to hurt it. It's a Honda, no need to treat it like glass. - What'd you come out of? a Yugo or a Jag? :lmao: :)
As for the 7 years part, that's laughable! The car might outlive you, and it'll surely last longer than you'll want to drive it. - No joke.
Just rolled 280,500 miles in the 86! 22 years and still going strong. :)
Have it serviced regularly, follow the Maintennace Minder and it's oil life monitor, get the tires rotated regularly, you know, the basics. The engine in the Accord requires no major services until 110k miles. - Not even spark plugs.
You might have the transmission fluid changed at 30k mile intervals if this is an Automatic. The Honda recommended interval of 120k miles is insane. No flushes though, and only use Honda fluid.

There is a rev-limiter on it, so you can't blow up the engine by accident, but I personally don't drive sticks anywhere near the limiter, but these high-reving engines can take it all day long and ask for more.
As for worrying about the engine, you should worry about the other drivers on the road hitting you a lot more than reving the engine above 3k RPM The engine will last a lot longer than the rest of the car.... that's why you bought a Honda

But, you have problems rolling up the window at that age.
Back on the OP......I had about 120 miles on it and then had to drive on a 880 mile trip. I used the cruise control and it was smooth sailing. Now I have about 5600 miles and it runs like a champ!! Engines now a days aren't like they were 40 years ago when you needed to break them in to make sure everything seated. Don't race the engine the first 700-800 miles and I think you are good to go.

haha i was driving a 1995 2.5ltr acura tl before this, and this is my first new car.
its a huggge improvement from my old car, and i love every bit of it. ill wait till i pass the 1k mark before i rev it alot, but i guess im just paranoid cuz this is my first real car.
thanks for everything guys, i just know nothing really at all about cars, i know how to change the oil and the basics but thats about it lol, and being as this is my first car, im just scared lol.
ive always heard that hondas have awsome engines (acura is made by honda and my old tl lasted me foreverr) but i didnt know how they could be treated, infact thats part of the reason i got the coupe, besides its bold new look and very comfortable interior.
lol my sister has a 2004 bmw m3 and i see her rev the heck outta that thing and i know thats how those cars are supposed to be treated, i just wasnt too sure about my accord.

My car here, is about 15 years old as it sits in this picture, and has well over 200K on the ODO... Ran Perfect, never an a performance issue Despite many trips to the track and daily reving to redline(just have to when 8krpm's are avalible to you :D )
