View Full Version : Gas Mileage?

I'm sure that this has been asked at some point on the forum, but my car is pretty new, not even 1000 miles on it yet. I'm averaging 19.4 mpg, and as I'm trying to break the car in I haven't been driving hard. I know city driving is only 21 mpg anyway, but has anyone else been experiencing low gas mileage? Does it have to do with the car being new?

Not really. I just checked my first tank, and on my commute, which is 28 miles each way, and consists of about 60% busy highway and the remainder being urban, I squeezed out 24.9mpg.
So I'm pretty pleased. I also drive a bit on the conservative side trying to get it broke in, but above the speed limits.

Not a lot of idling, and my commute to work is only 6 miles round trip. I'm driving maybe 20-40 miles a day total.

My car has almost 1500 miles on it. I drive about 50/50 on city and highway w/my V6 coupe.

So far, i'm averaging just a bit over 21 MPG on pretty light footed driving.

4000 miles as of this morning.

I've kept every Shell and Costsco fuel receipt since taking ownership last fall 10/25/07

a few long 600-800 mile trips... but city driving on the daily (but only 5-7 miles each way to work) ...

V6 EX-L Coupe 5AT

26.3 mpg ....and I use D3 in the city or under 45mph driving.

My car has about 7500 miles on it and 30/70 on city and highway.

Work is about 20 miles each way and still get about 23.9 mpg.

The most I got out of the car was 27 mpg, just on highway miles.

So far its been doing well for a 3.5 liters engine.

Way better than a 2008 Nissan Maxima 3.5 SE when I had it as a rental. 19 Mpg city/highway.

I am averaging just shy of 25mpg with 7500 on the clock. Mixed driving, probably 65% highway.

My odo is at 1200. As noted in a previous post, I drive approx 60% city (and half of that is heavy stop-n-go traffic). I still average 21.5 unless I "stomp on it" close to red-line more than 2 times per tank.

My wife has an 08 EX sedan and has averaged 26.8 MPG, mostly highway but she goes over 2 mountains each day.

I have an 08 Coupe LX-s and average 31.6. I also go over the same mountains.

In spite of the claims, the manual transmission gets far better fuel economy.

I'd always heard that driving in D3 burns more gas because the engine is running at higher rpms.

3800 miles since December and I'm averaging 22mpg. Mostly city driving. I've been using http://www.mpgtune.com to track every fuel purchase. My best tank was 25.44mpg and my worst has been 15.75.

I'll admit that I'm slightly disappointed with the fuel mileage. Hopefully she'll get worn in a little more and see if the summer blend gas helps any.

yep, using the power band moreso and shifting through the tranny less...

that's why I pointed it out, I probably could be getting better than 26.3 but I 'D3' it most of the time in city / stop go traffic.

Currently averaging 21mpg on a v6 Sedan. About 60% highway, 40% city. Odometer is at 460mi.

Still on my first tank of gas in the EX-L I4 Sedan and it appears i'm headed for something like 12/l per 100 km which would really suck. I am writing this off to break-in period. When I did test drive a Navi demo that had 8000k on it, i took it on the highway for a long stroll and the computer was calculating about a 8 l / 100 km average with gentle driving behaviour. I would be very happy with that sort of figure eventually on my own car.

You have a 86 and 87 GN!! My wife and I had a 87 GN for about 8 years before we sold it (was stolen once and just couldn't take it out anywhere).
But what power from it, we had some work done on it and it just flew, LOL, car was a jet.

Oh, gas mileage, I drive about 98% local and getting 18 mpg. Took two trips and got 28 mpg.

I'm averaging 23 or 24 I think. Best is 28 or 29, worst is 21. That seems to be about right for what I expected. My worst tank was the very first even though I went easy on it and drive far worse now, so I'd agree that at the very beginning it may need some time to break in.

Took about a 500 mile trip this weekend, with pretty much exclusively interstate driving. On the first half of the trip I averaged about 27 mpg and on the way back it got 31.5 mpg. Both are highs for the car. I took it easy, going 65 instead of the normal 72-75. Felt kind of weird having more people passing me than normal, but my wallet feels better. In the end, I feel better about the car.

I have an unmodified 2004 EX-L sedan 5-spd 4-cyl, purchased new four years ago, now with 51K. Car is used primarily in suburban area
(75%) of northeastern U.S. with about 25% highway use. Rarely driven in snow, but used as a daily driver.

I used CarCare software to keep meticulous track of MPG at every fill-up (only full fill-ups) by brand of gas.

Here's the average track record for my Accord (four-years worth of data):

Amoco / BP : 246 gallons total / 6792 miles traveled / 33 fill-ups / average of $2.46 per gallon / 27.63 avg MPG
Exxon : 716 gallons total / 17,661 miles traveled / 91 fill-ups / average of $2.38 per gallon / 24.66 avg MPG
Hess : 26 gallons total / 649 miles traveled / 4 fill-ups / average of $2.82 per gallon / 25.09 avg MPG
Shell : 65 gallons total / 1729 miles traveled / 7 fill-ups / average of $2.08 per gallon / 26.47 avg MPG
Sunoco : 520 gallons total / 15,626 miles traveled / 73 fill-ups / average of $2.65 per gallon / 30.07 avg MPG

I believe I used the Shell brand early in the car's life, as the average gas prices were quite low in the U.S.

I don't think I should rely on my Hess data, because it's statistically not significant here.

On my way to PA, it was wet, foggy, and rainy for much of the trip. In the mountains traffic was pretty much limited to 55 - 65mph. Trip computer indicated a high of 33mpg. Even with the mountain grades and the A/C on to help dehumidify, the reduced speed alone contributed to an increase in hwy mileage. Once in PA, the skies cleared, the roads dried, and a steady 80mph killed it. :paranoid: :D Factoring in about 1/3 of that tank was for city driving, overall calculated average was still a respectable 29.8mpg.

stevencrosbie

I found that anything over 80 MPH would bring the mileage down below 30. Stay at 70 and you will do wonders with the J series V6.

I averaged about 20.5 mpg within the first 1000 miles on the V6.

Currently, at 6000 miles, the average is about 22. I like the vtech kick a little too much. It's been many years since my last 200hp+ car.

Took a trip yesterday from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Cape Coral, FL and back.
Just over 300 miles in total - about 92% highway miles.
Average highway speed - 75 mph, A/C on 100%, 4 occupants.
26.5 mpg - I'm happy with that. It's about the same as my old I4 Accord would currently get under the same circumstances.

I have just about 5600 miles on my V6 coupe and have yet to reach that 20 mpg plateau (Granted 60-70% of those miles are city). Most of my tanks are only in the 17mpg range. I'm pretty easy on the car and always fill up as soon as I drop below a quarter tank. I don't think I have a heavy foot. I love cruise control when I'm on the highway and usually lock it in around 70 or 80 mph.

I really think some people are exaggerating their mpg.

I have a 2001 F23A4. I drive 30/70 City/Hwy, for my commute. I get 26.9 to 29 MPG, depending on the root to work (I have 3 roots possible). Regular Gas is $3.90-3.99 around hear.
I have a ScanGauge2, and the worst thing for FE (Fuel Economy) is stop and go traffic. For example starting from a stop, I get 3-12 MPG, till I get up to say 20 MPH, then 12-18 MPG, till, say up to to 45 MPH, once up to speed (in 4th gear), above 45 MPH, I get 30-40 MPG, depending on the speed. The shortest root, is not the best root. The root with the most continuous 45-65 MPH speed is the best!

It' the stop and go, is what kills FE!!!

Yes, using D3 for anything other than engine braking down urban hills will kill your mileage!!!!
With a final drive ratio of 4.31:1 take a look at your rpm (at any speed) while in D3.!!!

it could be because the 8th gen definitely has a decrease in the EPA rated mpg. They are bigger, heavier cars.

Ok, this is semi related to the '08 v6's, but its a reference....

It's totally possible for a big car with a 3.5l v6, and 268 hp to get upwards of 28mpg. I'm currently driving a Toyota Avalon with less than 500 miles on the odometer (the engine is still quite "green") and can get the trip computer to register about 28 mpg highway without trying too hard. This also includes the HVAC being on auto, some local streets & idling, and me occasionally getting on the gas.

The car also gets about 20-21 mpg in local driving, including some stop & go traffic, and of course me occasionally giving the gas a good poke.

It's only a tad worse than the MPG our Camry with the same engine gets, and it's definitely broken in...

I heard after 5,000 miles that the engine will "break in" and you are supposed to get good MPGs.

I have burned 1/2 of my tank and I drove around 200 miles (21.6 MPG), but the dealer filled it up and I wont give you a good answer until I filled up my tank again MYSELF and burn that second tank.

I get the ECO light a lot though (60% of the time) which makes me hope that 21.6 is wrong.

OP, isn't there another MPG thread here http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=16952 for 8th Gen Accords already?

Try taking a stop watch and time how long you are moving/rolling/stopped while engine is running. I think you'll be shocked.

My Accord EX-L I-4 w/A5 is averaging just 24 MPG in my CITY driving. This is real world (hand calculated, but the Trip Computer reads about .5 MPG LOWER) it displays 23.X while I'm actually getting .5 better fuel mileage. I bet I could get even better fuel mileage if I worked at it; I did one fuel tank as a fuel mileage challenge and got 24.3 MPG (hand calculated). So I know the Accord can be very efficient if driven easily,

I have 7500 miles and changed the Dino oil to Mobil 1 at 4500 miles and I maintain my tire pressure + 1 PSI from the door sticker too.

I'm happy with this since I have a "full size" car with all the toys that is fun to drive that can carry 4 adults in comfort. No complaints about real world fuel mileage from this first time Honda owner.

I have only filled up twice, and gotten 25 mpg both times. This is mostly city driving, nothing special to conserve. Car only has 800 miles on it as well.

19 on an I4!! YIKES!!!! I'm still besting 25mpg on my daily commute of mixed driving. I thought this last tank would be worse because I had to use the A/C everyday. Much to my surprise, I still got just a smidge over 25.

I'm still convinced in this modern day and age of higher efficiency locking torque converters that automatics will always beat a stick, mileage wise, all things being equal.
Several other categories too, but we wont go there.

Short trips KILL gas mileage! My commute went from 30 miles to 4 miles for a while last year, and my mileage went from 26 to 17:paranoid:

With over 9,000 miles on my V6 Accord, I am absolutely amazed how good my gas mileage is. I'm getting 26 mpg with about 1/3 city driving and 2/3 highway. When I bought the car, I only expected to get 23 mpg the way I drive the car. With these gas prices, I really appreciate the extra 3 mpg.:lmao::nuts:

Went into fuel conservation mode this last tank by keeping cruise control under 70 mph vs the usual 80 mph and no excursions into triple digits, tried to stay below 75 mph to complete pass/get out of the way of other traffic. Basically drove like an old man, which i'm getting to be!
Results - a 2.7 mpg increase - averaged 28.5 mpg vs lifetime average of 25.8 mpg after 8000 miles. V6 - 5AT
Will continue in this mode for another tank full.

My car gets horrible mpg about 20/21 overall but drives like a million bucks to me, I think for the price it approaches cars in the mid 30k except for a few luxury features. Its not missing much at all. That part makes up the bad mpg.

I do almost all city driving with most trips lasting about 15 to 20 minutes in duration and I get around 19 to 20 MPG. Also riding in the car with me, is my wife, a 20lb baby boy and a heavy stroller in the trunk. Most of the time, it's also loaded with grocceries and a diaper bag as well. I've gone about 2600km with the oil life at about 60% and I'm hoping to see better gas milage after my first oil change. I have yet to take it on the freeway for an extended run.

Steve,

Why do we have to sort through the 8th gen gas mileage board to find the posts that are for an 8th gen Accords? Why don't you tell the 7th gen people to post in the 7th gen board?

Just curious what you drive; there has never been an Accord 6-sp sedan. Am I missing something? Later.

Right, Thats the problem with trying to compare city MPG figures, everyone's city can be so much different.

1) how long is the trip (time and distance)
2) how many stop signs/stop lights
3) how long does car get to high gear (45+mph)

these all are very important, short trips (only few miles) and alot of stop lights = crappy mileage.

I was driving roughly 10miles for a constant trip for few months every day.
This netted me 23-24 mpg , now in last month or so the trip is only 5 miles and goes through more side streets(more stops an hardly getting into high gear). This is now avg around 20-21 mpg, the only other difference is AC is used a bit, but not much.

26.4 MPG. 25% City / 75% Highway

Right now the car is at 340 miles and has a quarter of a tank. This tank has been about 20% City / 80% Highway

I will be taking my wife's car on a roadtrip to Wisconsin in 3 weeks and am anxious to see what I can get.

My brothers V6 6-speed gets 19-21mpg in 70% city/ 30% highway, driving aggresively. 80% highway/ 20% city, also driving aggresively, he got 24.7mpg on the last tank.

it could be because the 8th gen definitely has a decrease in the EPA rated mpg. They are bigger, heavier cars.
The EPA changed their ratings criteria from 2007 to 2008. The new ratings are more accurate and substantially lower.

dgoff07 is most likely an 8th Gen owner with only 1,000 miles on the clock as of a week and half ago.

Besides, the comment he made which you seem to object was to point out that V-6 6-speed manual sedans did become available in 2006, it had nothing to do with the mileage discussion in this thread, so whether dgoff07 is an 8th Gen owner or not is totally academic.

The really ironic part is that you are a 7th Gen owner yourself according to your signature, so you've contradicated yourself by posting in this thread! :dunno::

Yeah I wasn't talking about dgoff07 although I did quote him. I should've referred to honda761 who is the owner of the 06 V6 6spd sedan posting his mileage in this thread.

I'm not an 8th gen owner, yet, but it would be nice to browse through this thread without having to differentiate between 7th and 8th gen numbers.

Fuel Economy numbers are sometimes a stretch but overall I am very pleased with our's. We have an 08 with everything but the V6....sometimes I really REALLY miss that.

We have 12,750 on it so far and when we purchased it back on December 13th 2007 I set the second trip odo to zero. The car had 7 miles on it. It hasn't been touched since.

To date the second odo has moved from an average of 20.9 to 24.8 over the entire history of the car. Our current averages weekly are around 26.2-26.7 which includes 50+ miles each way every day with plenty of steady driving at 45-50 or so on back roads, the occasional stop signs and then heavy stop and go traffic on the interstate. Then it's on the surface streets again. I did begin to see the increases in FE the dealer mentioned once we neared 5000 miles and it's been improving slightly ever since.

We just did the second oil change with Mobil 1 and not a drop burned since day one. I attribute the slight sudden increase in FE to the fresh, slippery oil but the engine has likely broken in completely.

Our best average yet was a 300+ mile roadtrip and that returned 35+ mpg. This is not a joke or some fabrication. I calculated the amount based upon what the trip computer stated and my actual fuel usage/mileage. My actual calculations were within about 2 10th's of a mpg so I feel the trip com is accurate. I was cruising at around 65-70 at most, maybe a bit higher occasionally and the A/C was on as well.

For the record i'm not one of this highmiler idiots. If I want to have fun and burn copious amounts of fuel i'll use my 07 M5 :)

I'm expecting to see no real additional increases in FE. I think i've about reached the limit of how carefully I will drive :)

I drive aggressively and got 18.95 mpg on my first tank. Even though its about 50/50 city/highway, the highways I drive in L.A. are closer to city traffic than highway.

My first tank got 23mpg. My second tank tonight brought me 240 miles off of 9 gallons. Around 26.5mpg, which is exactly what we were hoping for.

Our driving is 30% highway, 70% city.

Accord Coupe EX-L, 4cyl automatic.

Drive about 80% highway,
last tank was just over 30MPG. Most tanks (after i broke 5000 miles on car) average around 30 (between 28.5 and 30.5).
I just had my first oil change (at 8200 miles and computer still said 20% life).
So we'll see if that nets a small MPG increase or not.
I'm very impressed with this big car's MPG, and i don't always drive it in a "Fuel efficient" way :)
