Hi guys, I currently own a 2007 accord coupe. My parents have been trying to open up a business and wanted to buy my car from me for a DD. Reason is they both drive gas guzzling trucks and they need a car that'll conserve gas. In return they offered to have me pick out another car that is IF they manage to open up the business. I actually wanted a 2006-2007 because there are a lotta great deals on them but only problem is theyre too far and i don't know how much it would cost to ship if possible. Well that was the least of the problems. My dad wants me to get a 2008 or no deal. I just want a 6 speed. Well to the point, i was wondering has anyone encountered any problems with the 08? like any bugs or anything that wasn't ur fault? i looked over on edmunds but the gripe people have with the car is like minor to me like road noises. i'm used to that in a lotta hondas. but like anything else.
Thanks,
Jon

The only thing that I was a little leary about is the tranny. It's the same 6 speed thats in the Si and those have had some issues with 3rd gear. Honda knows of the problem and as of last week issued a service bulletin on some prexisting 6-speeds. Any newly made 6-speeds should be good to go though.

Other than some minor rattles here and there nothing major that I've heard about. Since they are still so new it's still a little early to tell IMO.

I'm think i'm gonna wait til next year same time to pick up a 2009....but that could partly be because my sis saw the 2008 while i've been shopping for a car and shes decided to pull the purchase trigger before me. I guess that way i'll be able to see some bugs if any and if there are some bugs honda mite be able to correct some of em by the time the 09s roll out :)

I just hope my parents will manage to open up the business. Of course I'll have to pay off the car myself but I'm trying to get rid of my i4 auto so I can drive a 6 speed. Driving an auto is just boring.

Update: I went to the dealership and bad news is they don't and probaly won't be getting any 6 speed models, even navi's at all til the end of the year. I also sat in one of the coupes and i think it's too big for me. I don't feel like i'm strapped to the seat...and the dash sorta does remind me of the civic. I actually kinda like the 7th gen interior better. Although I must admit the exterior of the 8th gens are bamf. but I might just try to fight with my dad for the 7th gen 6 speed since i will probaly get a much better deal. Thanks everyone.

Remember this is merely a technical service bulletin covering a specific range of cars...

SixSpeedTansmissions (http://automotivetech.org/at/6spdtsb.pdf)

this type of TSB that covers Syncro operation is NOT that unique to the automobile industry for all manufacturers that offer manual transmissions.

so does this mean i can bring my car in and they'll fix it?

fix what? do you have an issue? If not, then there is NOTHING to fix. This is a T.S.B. NOT, I repeat NOT, a recall. Don't go out and try and make an issue for yourself by testing your cars third gearset to see if you can induce the problem. If, and I mean IF, you car suffers from the stated issues and is between the VIN numbers listed, you can get help... otherwise your car is perfectly fine, as is mine.

I am benginning to get the distinct feeling that those of us that are lucky enough to have a 6-6 that was released in 08, are in posession of very rare cars

my third gear has always been iffy, but i bought it into a dealership and they made nothin of it. i have a feeling their response will be different this time now that the TSB is out. most people have commented that their 3rd gear has smoothed out as the car got broken in, but mine has remained the same and has caused some nasty grinds.

that would definetely fall under the TSB issue. I think most of it is the owers not knowing how to drive a manual correctly. HOWEVER, if you have a syncro problem then go in... I would, but I have not experienced anything that I would want someone else to lay hands upon my car for. My tranny does seem notchy, but notchy is NOT defective. I think this notchyness causes many lazy drivers to GRIND the gears when making that second to third gear change.

I have trouble getting 3rd to engage sometimes. My RSX Type-S (6MT also) was the same way--3rd gear blocking. It's intermittent enough on my Accord that it's not currently a personal concern. But if it worsens then I'll be at the dealer to get it addressed.

I had the 3-4 and 5-6 syncros replaced on my RSX under a very similar TSB. Was gone for a while but came back eventually.

The only Honda 6-speed gearbox/tranny I haven't heard of having issues is the S2K, but those are "notchy" feeling right of the box.

What pisses me off about these types of TSBs are how Service Advisors handle 'em. If they can't reproduce the problem right then and there then they claim there isn't a problem. Never mind that the TSB itself states "intermittent" as the likely frequency of occurrence. You just have to maintain your demeanor and reach satisfaction in a calm professional manner.

that would definetely fall under the TSB issue. I think most of it is the owers not knowing how to drive a manual correctly.

I think this only applies in a very small number of instances, as most individuals driving 6-speeds have most likely been driving sticks for at least a decade or so. Pushing in a clutch and moving a stick from 1-2, 2-3, etc. is not rocket science (regardless of what my wife thinks). Also keep in mind that this problem is exclusive to the 6-speeds (at least as far as any TSBs have ever been concerned). So either the issue is primarily with the tranny/syncros/gearbox/whatever, or a bunch of bumbling retards are the ones scooping up all the 6-speeds.

Having been driving 5- and 6-speeds for 15 years now, I don't fall into the "bumbling retard" category.

That being said, "lazy shifting" CAN be a possible cause...one I've caught myself on a few times. However, as many times as I've caught myself shifting lazy, I've also found that even after mentally correcting my technique 3rd still would not engage confidently, and as result popped out a few times (again, moreso on the RSX than the Accord, but identical behavior and feel).

I will personally be keeping a very close eye (and hand) on this issue, having been dealing with it since '04, but it's not an issue that taints my love for the car or brand. I know Honda will take care of me, which is readily apparent with this TSB (which came out a LOT faster for the '08 Accord than it did for the RSX by a LONG shot).

precisely. i, for one, can't say i'm an expert at driving stick, but i've never grinded in any other gears, and i dont see how not being able to put it into 3rd but able to put it in every other gear constitutes as poor driving. goin from 4th to 5th has never caused a problem for me. ever.

My personal feeling is that the driver related issues are more timing based rather than technique based... The quick shift syndrome.

I have to admit that with a hydraulic clutch that the feeling has insulated me from what I love, that feel for the motor and road. I have struggled at times to get the "Timing" down to a science, but I attibute this to not having enough seat time in the car as yet... still only 250 miles three weeks in. I have many many years of track experience(on bikes and cars), so the mechanics/techniques of shifting are one of the things I am really proud of in my driving. Even racers can be hard on transmissions... I usually am not. That being said, we should all thank Honda for this proactive repsonse to what must be only a few owners troubles as tehre really are not that many 6-6's out there.
