At my 60k checkup/service at the dealer today, I asked them to investigate what's causing a shimmy when I brake. They just called me and said that they think the rotors need to be machined (I agree, based on how it feels), but the pads have 70% of life left on them and really don't need to be replaced. However, he told me I shouldn't have the rotors turned without replacing the pads too, because the existing pads may then mess up the remachined rotors.
I bought the car with 30k miles on it 11 months ago, and just passed 60k miles and have never put brakes on it. I don't know if the pads are the originals -- it seems like a long time for brakes to last, but then again it was driven by an older lady before me, and I spend all my time on the highway, so the brakes don't get a ton of use.
Is what the service tech said correct? Would it be worthless to just have the rotors machined without replacing the pads? I don't want to throw away pads with 70% on them, but I am toying with the idea because the vibration is really annoying. A local shop I trust will do front ceramic pads and machine the rotors for $150. Any thoughts?
