View Full Version : thinking of trading the accord in this summer

so with the problems i am having with my accord, i might trade it in.
my transmission is slipping, and has been getting worse very slowly.:paranoid:
i am going to need new breaks this summer, and i have some boots that need to be replaced, for the steering.
my ac quit working on me this summer, it tried to work, but no cold air:thumbsdow
it is leaking oil like crazy from somewhere i have no clue, but i know it is not the oil pan, or the valve cover.:dunno:

the repairs are going to be more than the car is worth i am guessing, so i guess i need to start looking to replace it.

flame suit on:paranoid:
i was thinking of an vw...with the knowledge i have i think i can buy the right year this time...:lmao:

i either want the vr6, or a TDI, i really want a TDI, but they are hard to find there is only 2 listed on auto trader with 2-doors, and that is any distance, not just my area.

or i might get another Honda, if i do i want an accord 2-door, standard 6-cylinder. i don't know what year i would get, but i would keep it under 13k.

Good luck with making the choice!

i will have to see which one gets better gas millage.
but i want a v6, because the extra power is worth a few mpg imo.
i really want a hatchback, but honda only has a civic hatchback, and i just can't drive a civic...

I highly advise no VW if you 'really' want a reliable car.

More fun of course, but sometimes you just can't have your cake and eat it too.

Used 7G would be awesome! I'm convinced the K-Series is the best 4 cyl out there, not to mention how well the Accord seems to hold up over time.

I'm ready to move on too. While my 96 Accord is totally mechanically sound at the moment, and up to date on maint. I want a new Civic! I've got to decide if the 86 is going to stay or go. I'll know my choice for sure by the end of May.

i want an v6, and the vw vr6 is an great engine.
if i get another accord it will be a late 6th gen, or an early 7th gen, but not first year production.

if i get an vw, it will be a golf tdi, or vr6 late mk4. 2-door.
i have worked on vw quite a bit, and i know what i am getting into.
i also got a lemon for my last one, and know what years to stay away from.

Civics have few complaints.... being lighter, their 4 bangers are pretty peppy!:)

I have no personal experience with VWs. Well, I have seen lots of old ones on fire on the shoulder of the roads over the years. But I'm sure that's been dealt with many years ago!!:paranoid:

Car shopping can be such fun!

Drive lots of different ones.

i guess not:dunno:

a civic is just to small for me, i am a tall big guy. the accord is just big enough, and my head rides the roof on my moms new civic, so i am not even going to look at them.

I'm not a Civic person either... not the size, but the lack of bells & whistles. :)

We thought it was perfect for my mom. She loves it. Her husband is a very tall guy.....6'4" or more. He doesn't drive & does fine in the passenger seat.

My buddy just bought her daughter a new Civic sedan. She's loving it. She's 20 now.

Me? I'll take an Accord any day over a Civic.

So what use are you looking to fill?

I like how the new Civics have Leather and Navi optional! The EX-L's are quite the nice ride for $20 grand.

i am just looking for a little more powerfully car that is a stick, and gets 20mpg or better.
i don't care about bells and whistles, i was happy with crank windows...
i also like allot of room, but i don't normally have 4 people in my car, 2 sometimes, but it is normally just me, so i want a 2-door.
i like the hatchbacks, because i would have allot of trunk room, for coolers, my bike, ect.

Hey Steve, If you were close to me I would sell you my accord for 14k. I baby this car and of course drive like grampa since I have another baby in the backseat. I drive a lot of hwy miles so you know thats easier on the engine than city driving...still drives like new. You can tell I don't drive aggresive by the looks of my tires.

Only if you were around the area.

good luck.

well i am not planing on just trading it in right away, sometime this summer, i don't think the transmission will last through another winter, so that is the main reason i want to get rid of it.

i plan on going to the dealership, and seeing what they can do for me in terms of $$per month, and the interest rate, just to get an idea of what i am in for.
i want a long time to look so i can get a great deal this time, and not just a car that will do, because i am in a hurry.

vws are fun. Ive driven a vr6 golf, and man does that thing pull.

The s40 volvo is also a beautiful car, not a v6 but the turbo motor is just as quick.

THe legay its also nice ... to bad they have so many HG problems.

i talked to my dad to ask him what i should do, and he agrees the car needs to go by next winter.

he offered to pay to get my ac fixed, but i don't think i am going to take him up on the offer, because it is the least of my worries on the car. the transmission is near the top, and the oil leak is also high up there. i might try to fix the ac myself, but just to sell it, because no one in Texas wants to buy a car with no ac:thumbsdow

i am just going to be looking for another accord now, no vw's, i had a dream, where i had another vw, and it needed all this work done...lol

so i just need to save some $$ in the meantime, i will keep you all posted on what happens.

I wish you the best both in your current car holding up and seeking a newer one. I'm with you on a stick shift V-6 but the 7th gen 2.4l manual might surprise you if you haven't driven one. It's also very "tossable" due to less weight on the nose.

I almost traded yesterday!

2000 Signet Silver Metallic (?) Accord EXL V6 with 43k at my local dealer. They were asking $10900. It was very clean, not 'astounding', but clean. The headlights were not clear anymore and it had a few little scratches. Full service history from 4k, and they just changed the oil and did the pads and turned the rotors on all 4 corners. Good tires.

BUT. I insisted that I wanted a warranty. And they have a warranty that is very similar to the one I've had on my CarMax cars; it's very good, covers almost any defect. I wanted this due to the V6 and the transmission issues. I looked through all the records though, and it had nothing about the tranny. They were firm as a mountain on that price though, and they did not want to move. I was offered 2750 for the 96 Accord at first, because "the miles make it unsellable on their lot". I called BS and pointed out an 02 SE with 140k miles on it. Mine has just over 118k, and is issue free for the most part. They agreed that it was in very good shape. I showed them my service binder and they came back and offered $4200. Which basically means they were giving me a free warranty.

I walked. I decided that I'd rather take 11 grand and put it toward something I really, really want, not just a car to give me that "car fix" I so helplessly seek.

So for now, I drive on in my issue free 96 Accord that costs me nothing but gas and insurance to keep on the road. :)

wow i saw this today, and it seems like a good car, if i end up having to part with the accord really fast without saving any money.
but it has high millage, and i think if i save up i can get a car with around 70k on it. not the perfect car, but i do love the preludes styling though...

If that Accord needs a new transmission (assuming thats the ONLY issue) and a buyer can tell it needs one, you're looking at more no more than $2 grand for it, as Honda AT's typically cost 2-3k to replace at a shop/dealer.

If you can get your hands on an AT cheap, and think you can install one, it might be worth the effort if it means getting 1-2k more for your car.

If it is a sound car with little to no noticeable mechanical flaws/defects (assumes the tranny is fixed/replaced) and most everything works, I say you're looking at 3400, maybe 4k though I doubt it.

A TDI would be a great vehicle.

I'd stay away from a used Honda as their resale is amazing and you don't get much value for the money you spend on the vehicle.

If you can swing it, there are some great deals to be made ona New Hyundai Elantra. They have more power than the Civic and are a lot bigger. They are nice cars with a proven engine and a nice interior.

Good luck!

WRX in the picture at all? The 08s even in the base WRX trim are pretty loaded and you can get one with around 10k miles for 22000 or under. They are also quite a bit roomier than previous generations. But well, the gas mileage is not great.
I might actually get me one and pass the Accord to my mom...Thinking about it. If I am reasonably sure it won't rattle :) I will probably pull the trigger.
