View Full Version : Anyone Prefer Sirius to XM?

I am a long time XM subscriber, but over the past year or so I have had the opportunity to listen to Sirius in various rental cars, and I must say - for me, the programming is much better!

In any event, I am considering the HON SC-C1 adapter to convert XM to Sirius while maintaining all stock controls. Looks like it works well in an 08 TSX:

What do you all think?

Xm is not really worth the price to me so I tried to cancel it but they gave it to me for 3 more months free. After that, I will cancel it. i'll be ordering a used ipod from ebay instead.

Only thing i like on XM is the comedy and the 90's music station. I heard somebody mention the audio quality on XM is terrible, if this is true this is the ultimate strike against xm (or satalite radio in general?).

Ive only had sirius on a satellite tv service and checked out only sparingly to compare with the last car with XM, for my station selection it didnt suit me as well, but not too big of a difference...that said the amount of sampling i had listening to the 2 was equal by any means

I would guess ti would work, this might help

I have siruis mainly for Howard and some of the music channels. I have not listened to XM so I don't know how it compares. If the merger goes through then you won't have to choose.

So I've had XM in my Pilot for a few years now, and with the new Montego I've got Sirius (free 6 month subscription). From a programming perspective, they're pretty comparable in terms of the things I listen to. But for me, the issue with Sirius is reception in the Northeast area.

I didn't know much about the transmission of XM vs Sirius - figured they were just a couple of satellites for each solution. But I kept getting dropouts with Sirius, so did some research. XM has 2 stationary satellites (basically they stay in the same spot matching the earth rotation) - one for the east, one for the west, in the southern sky. I got some dropouts if trees were in the way, but overall it was predictable reception. With Sirius, they have 3 satellites in a constant orbit that (for the lack of a better description) orbit north to south in an oval pattern, primarily through the middle of North America. Two satellites transmit at any one time, and as one leaves, the incoming one picks up the signal. Since the orbit is basically N/S in the middle of the country, it leaves "fringe" areas towards the east and west coasts, and that "fringe" varies depending on where satellites are in their orbit. Being in NH, I'm on the fringe most of the time.

What I was finding was that some days I'd get good reception on a particular road, and others it'd be garbage with Sirius - whereas with XM it'd be consistent. So the orbits explain that, and it's making me really think about whether I'd pay $$ to continue my Sirius subscription once the 6 month trial expires. I could take that opportunity to disconnect the Sirius unit and insert an aux input converter to listen to my IPOD - will consider that as I get close.

I have Sirius in my Accord, and I love it.

No one I know with Sirius or XM has any reception problems though...

I guess it's just what your used to having.

I had XM in my '05 Chevy Cobalt and it was good. Then Sirius got NASCAR and I made the switch. I like Sirius because of the programing other than music that is offered. I get to hear NBA games, NASCAR, Howard Stern and other great channels.

I've been listening to XM for the last week in my 08, and I gotta admit that I'm impressed with their music. I mostly listen to Dance/House/Electronica, and XM carries some impressive tunes. I have not yet used Sirius to make a precise comparison.

I love XM for the comedy channels. The other stuff I listen to is kinda "eh". No harder Christian music channel at all. I don't do talk radio. Couldn't care less about friggin' basketball or hockey.

But for a little over $6/mo. I think the comedy channels alone on XM are worth it.

I like Sonny Fox quite a bit. =)

So here's the web site that has the info on the different satellite coverage. The more "pink" areas on the first graphic on the page are the fringe - and being in PA you're "less fringe" than here in New England. Funny satellite orbits for sure...

what do you mean there are like 3 christian channels I think they are 30-33.

anyway at the one guy above that's interesting about the satalite orbit but why would they want to not focus on the east and west coast where most of the people in this nation are?

XM has super shi**y customer service and after having them for 3 years I dropped 'em and got into Sirius.

Bought Sirius and had it for a year and missed many XM channels (8, 9, 20-26, 82) but LOVED having howard. IMO Sirius has better house, electronica, industrial than XM.

Now I'm back w/ XM and am getting my fill of missed programming - for the time being... As soon as a good aftermarket dash kit is available I'll be going back to Sirius for HOWARD and to not feed XM's super crappy customer service.

Satellite radio FTW. Terrestrial radio FTL, for sure - WAY too many commercials.

I was with XM from roughly 02-04, Sirius 05-present. My new 08 has XM factory installed so I'm giving it the 3 month tryout to see if I like it any better than Sirius.

So far it's hit and miss. I love "Lucy" but I miss "Left of Center". I think Sirius rock/alternative channels are better, but XM's jazz and classical channels are way better. I find XM's comedy channels much easier to listen to, but mostly due to the bitrate than the content. Sirius compresses the piss out of their comedy channels - it's literally painful for me.
