Paul was taking Nicholas to baseball tonight & was stopped in commuter traffic. The car behind him was stopped several feet away. They had both just pulled onto the freeway. A 16 year old girl in a brand new Charger rammed into the car behind with enough force to ram it into the Accord! (CHP estimates her going about 40 mph).

The Accord already had an imperfect bumper, but now it also has a broken tail light. The car sandwiched wasn't damaged much in front, but the trunk now won't open. The Charger was accordian'd:) in front. Since she was on her phone when Paul walked up to see if everyone was OK, she was likely on it when she mashed into the cars.

No one is hurt. The passenger in the sandwiched car said her neck was hurting some. Nicholas grabbed the back of the seat (he was right behind the driver's seat).

The airbags in the Charger did NOT deploy.:dunno: You'd think at 40 or so mph they would.

July 1st adults must start using handsfree for mixing driving & cellphones. Anyone under 18 can NOT use cell phones & drive at all! They claim it will save the state 300-900 lives per year. Not sure about that since it's the mental distraction more than the physical... but we'll see.

It's good that nobody was seriously hurt.

People scare me when they drive when talking on a cell phone...

My biggest fear!

Hopefully if the insurance company totals it (likely), then they can keep the car.

I was rear ended in the 86 Accord and got a check for $1100 and I got to keep the car. They had no use for such an old vehicle (10+ years).

Keep us posted!

I estimate $1500 to repair. What is the actual estimate/cost.

princess

No estimate yet. It's too soon.

The wheels are Acura...they came with the car. I don't know which model.:dunno: In fact, one was all booggered up & we had to find a match on eBay!

There's no way it's even close to totaled. It's probably around 2K. Knowing the kids, they'll get a used taillight. Have dad pull out the fold as best he can, ignore the bumper & put the money in the bank for moving.

So they car isn't pretty....but the drive train is still strong & no MT problems. The AC works, there's no interior damage other than the coin bucket. It was falling out. I THINK it may have been replaced, but I'm not in the car much & when I am I don't sit & pick it apart. She loves her her.

Paul wants to sell off his little '91 Civic Si. He doesn't deal with cars & it needs a few things. Someone before he owned it took out the AC. Dumb.

Well, now I know what brand the car was that got sandwiched!:lmao:

Glad they are ok.

Driving while talking on a cell phone wouldn't be to bad if folks knew how to drive to start with.

Our over educated new company owner. Saw a chance to lower our co. insurance bill. There is a clause in the policy about driving and cell phones. Its a big NO NO! The funny thing is. I was just in a meeting with the CFO. After all is said and done. We will loose money on the new policy. With the updates that have to be done with our paint booth, Fork Lift Instruction and cert. And a host of other retarded crap. We went backwards money wise.

I carry a cell. For the life of me I can't see whats so damn cool about them. Muchless why folks think they have to talk on them all the time. My middle daughter is a cell phone whore.

Our kids seem to think they're part of your clothes or something.... can't leave the room without it!

They are all pretty good about talking & driving. Not perfect. I don't make calls when driving. I keep my cell where I can see it to determine if an incoming call should be answered. If it needs to be, I'll answer & park.

Glad to hear everyone is OK.
I don't think the new law will effect anything. Cellphones are not the problem, stupid drivers are. Its been proven, that a passenger, is of more distraction than anything else, no law agents passengers. Eating? Lissing to news talk? Music? GPS. SG2. HAM Radio, please say no. OR, having a CHP, behind you? All these and more, are all a distraction. I forgot, "thinking" was rated number one, we need to all stop thinking, no?

Open container is against the law here. It is only used on drivers that are drinking booze or beer. But they can write you a ticket for a open can of soda in the reach of the driver.

They have determined that ANYTHING you do while driving is distracting.

A bicyclist was killed by a girl changing her CD while driving.
Many minor accidents have happened when eating.
A coffee spill will certainly ruin your morning whether or not you hit a car or person.

The government will continue to try to stupid proof us. We all will pay for the minority that can't walk & chew gum at the same time.

I read somewhere that with cell phones teenage boys can handle talking & driving more safely than teenage girls. BUT moms can handle it safer than men. :dunno: I guess they're more used to being distracted or multi-tasking.

THE most distracting thing for a teenage boy would be a teenage girl!:D

We also have the "open container" law in CA. As a kid I thought for sure "drinking & driving" included the sodas & thought my daddy was going to end up in jail! He often had his black cherry Shasta or root beer while on the road!:paranoid:

The couple in the Toyota had borrowed it to go car shopping. They'd dropped off their babies & were headed to Sacramento.

No after effect injuries today! I told Nicholas to tell me if his arms, neck or shoulders ached at all today. He's fine.

Tonight's baseball practice or game may be done by streets instead of the freeway. It's always at a near stop that time of day anyway. I NEVER use it.

Man, that sucks. I'm sorry to see that and glad everyone is ok. So what does the rim look like? Maybe we can help you figure out what model it is from.

Those look to be from a 95-96 or so Acura TL2.5.

I'm glad to hear that everyone is okay and that the accident wasn't any worse than it was... especially with the kids in the car.

Yeah. That's a 2.5TL rim. I'm sure you can find one on ebay for cheap.

And a cell phone, it's an accident waiting to happen...........

Been there done that.

I was 16, driving a Mercedes, reaching down for his 'oh so important' sunglasses who bashed into a Mustang going 70mph. The result... nearly 10 grand in repairs to my car and an insurance rate hike that will stay with me until I'm 24.

Live and learn...sigh.

It was likely mommy's car!:)

The other day my prince was asked by his boss to do a safety inspection on a fairly new Civic. It was for the boss' neighbor. When asked if he'd buy it for one of his kids going off to college, he said NO! The guy was puzzled. The car was in pretty nice shape. He said it was too good to give to a kid! The guy laughed.

This guy hovered over the whole inspection & went on the test drive with him. He got questions answered & details explained. He was thrilled to get such good, honest treatment.

Our kids' first cars were 350 dollar cars. Kid #1 got an '82 Civic sedan MT. She had to learn to drive a stick to drive it. It was a rust bucket with a clean interior & strong drive train. Kid #2 got a '79 Accord HB. It needed to be rebuilt & barely ran. Dad went through the engine & it was really nice inside & out. He got a great deal! Kid #3 got my '82 Accord LX sedan AT. She put 100K on that thing in a year!!! Traded it in on a brand new '98 Civic & got 1K for it!

I think families with teens should have a trainer car. Many people we know did that. Then once they had been driving a year or so, helped them buy a nice car. I don't recommend an old car of yours being the trainer one! I was heart broken to see my '82 get beaten up! She had about 4 accidents in that year! The hood, bumper, grill & a fender had been replaced & the whole car repainted before she traded it in! We teased her about driving by braille! :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Wow, glad to hear that no one got hurt!!

I just wonder how someone can hit another car at 40mph, not get off the phone after the accident, and presumably never hit the brakes :dunno:

The kids' 5th gen held up pretty well in the mix of things though! Let us know how it turns out, princess :)

I will! The insurance called yesterday.... they wanted Crystle's take on it all. She wasn't there. So I assume they called Paul.

Did I type-o????:dunno: Or are you just removing the "teenage" part???
