View Full Version : To Sirius,or not to Sirius??
steelerfan7111 01-07-2005, 09:55 PM Just wondering if anyone out there has the SIRIUS satallite radio, and how they like it? We bought it tonight, and it seems pretty good..though maybe due to the rain we are receiving here in Indianapolis,it sounded more like am radio.
Pat B 05-31-2005, 08:06 AM Sirius is great, excellent selection of tunes you can get NFL,NBA,college hoops and if you like howard stern he will be there at the end of the year. The sound quality is great, better than radio, depending what type of sirius radio you get. Bottom line it is worth the money.
greggdogg 05-31-2005, 11:10 AM I love Sirius, I'll never go back to regular radio.

i have XM, but i feel the same way
andysinnh 06-01-2005, 02:57 PM OK - I had XM on my Pontiac Aztek from the factory, and I really liked it (had it 2 years). Let me give you a downside. I live in NH, with lots of winding roads, lots of hills/ledges, and lots of trees. Satellite radio (XM or Sirius) is line-of-site, and I was contstantly losing signal due to blockage in the line-of-site. In more metropolitan areas, they have electronic repeaters to make the signal go under bridges, between buildings, etc - anywhere that the line-of-site would be gone. Out in the rural areas I live, there are no repeaters, so you get the signal coming in and out a lot.
just something to consider....

Hugh Jazzzzzzzz 08-09-2005, 07:48 AM I have both XM and Sirius, I 1st started out with XM it was great nice smooth sound of the music a crap load of stations but then i made the trans. to Sirius because i am awaiting Howard Stern, but for now i love both of these services if Howard wasnt coming to sirius then i would of stayed with XM In my car and but i have the XM playing in the house because the family thinks it's better but what ever .
( I wonder if you can have both Xm and sirius in 1 car ummmmm....)
F6Hawk 08-09-2005, 06:25 PM Are you sirius? You made the switch just to listen to Sterno Boy? Thank goodness this is a free country, and we can make our own decisions, but there is a WHOLE lot more out there to base a decision on than that man! :lmao:
Bigbucks1959 10-09-2005, 05:46 AM U sound misinformed....Stern is BIGGGGGGGGGG reason that SIRI stock is gonna take off in 2006.

That has nothing to do with what company we choose for our XM service. Just because the stock takes off doesn't mean it's better. See: EFAX (5+ years ago) or airline stocks.
Bigbucks1959 10-09-2005, 12:46 PM I think you missed my point, Buying Sirius for Stern is what alot of people are doing and will be doing.
PK
PS I know I have my ticket for the SIRI ride in 2006.

Well I was going to look it up, but it's taking to long...I was investing some of my money in Calypso ( CLYW ) because they were talking about intergrading SIRI and XMSR into one service some way through a product they were going to make...I don't know what they have made yet but I know a lot of the news on them have do to with getting satelite radio on PDA's now...Just something to look into I guess.

That's 20 bucks a month for radio...I dunno about that...
Bigbucks1959 10-09-2005, 01:06 PM ME 2...I have all the CDS and music to keep me happy for along time
I hardly ever play the radio..I have thought about getting satellite radio but, just can't do it..
Call me a CHEAPASS...I mean FRUGAL..

Bigbucks1959 10-09-2005, 01:09 PM Normally I only do Mutuals..But I saw what SIRI did when it weas announced that Stern was going there ($3 - $9 in a month or so)..So I bought some shares after missing that ride (and kicking myself in the head) :thumbsdow
I am not trying to convince anyone what to do with their $$, but I see SIRI as very undervalued, but like that means anything to the market makers..LOL

ericrwalker 10-09-2005, 01:14 PM I wasn't actually wondering if I can use XM and SIRI in my car...I was actually trying to quote someone else. As usual I messed up my quote so I didn't go there...I was answering someone else...Personally I am still not sure if it's worth it to pay for radio when I get FM for free and can use my Sony 20 Gig MP3 player (hold's about 13,000 songs and the battery last about 40 hours ( much better than IPOD IMO ) . :notworthy

fotodad 10-09-2005, 04:34 PM I own Sirius and have for about three years. Here's my view of Sirius and satellite radio.
Someone mentioned paying a monthly fee ($12.95) just to listen to the radio. While that may sound absurd, in my view it is money WELL spent. I pay for a yearly subscription so I get a bit of a deal. But to listen to radio without the clutter of commercials and trite comments by radio jocks who think they're funny is truly enjoyable. Yes, on the music channels there are jocks, but their talk is EXtremely minimal and when they say something it is informative, usually about the artist, the song, or the era.
Some might say why not use an mp3 player or listen to your CD changer if you want commercial-free programming. Good point. But I found listening to the same one or two or even six CDs all the time gets real monotonous real fast. And I don't feel like burning or buying new CDs every week. Yes, an mp3 player is a good option, but again, the music becomes "expected" or "usual." Satellite radio (XM or Sirius) offers new, fresh music after each song as well as the classics depending on the channel you are tuned to.
Regarding the healthy competition between XM and Sirius:
As far as music selection and the quality of the sound both XM and Sirius are so, so close. One might have a slight lead in one area, the other a slight lead in another area. So when someone says he/she is buying Sirius because of Howard Stern, I completely understand the reasoning. Little differences like that are what will make people lean toward one service over another. I have 12 presets on my Sirius tuner which have a variety of classic music, talk-radio, contemporary music, and alternative music. I will never miss regular AM or FM again!! Good riddance!!
Bigbucks1959 10-09-2005, 05:17 PM My 30GB Creatlive Labs MP3 player does a heck of a job with it's 5,000 song capacity on it.

and my Sony 20GB MP3 player also does a heck of a job with about 13,000 song capacity and a 40 hour battery life. Sony does a hell of a job with the atrac3 plus format. But I only have about 9,000 songs on it right now. The rest of the space is good for me to use as a portable USB drive.
Bigbucks1959 10-10-2005, 04:02 AM What bitrate you have your songs at?
I normally never go below 192kb for my .wma files on my player.

They are 64kb Atrac3...I convert wma....You would be surprised that the quality of 64kb atrac3 plus sounds really good for being so low.

I've tried them, they sound good for 64kb like you said, but the difference is clear to me. I don't like it, so I keep all my files on my 40GB iPod at 128-192...the ones that I ripped myself are at 256/256VBR.

The main reason I didn't get the Ipod was I didn't like the choices with the colors...I wish they had silver...there are a few others, some people I know had their hard drives go bad from jogging with it. Also I prefer Sonys remotes for their radios. I have had Mini disc players and CD players from Sony and like that. Apple has finally pulled some kind of lead in the market, is Steven Jobs still running that show?
I do like that you can play games on the new IPOD's and I like how you can search for track too.

I'm not digging the iPod anymore. I only bought it because all the reviews I read about others I wanted (Creative, etc) seemed to imply that they were not as user friendly. After using my Ipod and seeing a friends Creative Zen Micro, I'm going to go back to a generic brand and pay much much less money now. I don't care about colors, I don't jog, I don't listen to radio. I just want it to play music.
My Pioneer MD from Japan had the absolute best sound quality on any portable device I've ever heard. That thing could pump bass so hard with my $30 Sony wraparound earphones that I could feel it in my gut  I just got sick of real time "uploading" (recording) because the thing was from 1995 (97?) lol

I hear you, when I was in Korea I bought my MD player. It was more or less needed since I did a lot of riding in the subways, to keep me occupied. When I am in the States I don't use it so much because I have a radio in the car. Though I got my Sony MP3 Player because I am in Iraq now, most people have some sort of MP3 player here. The other thing I like about MP3 Player is that I can use it like an external hard drive....
Anyway we really through this thread off of sirius, but as for sirius...I don't know if it's something I will keep, I like listening to my local DJ's...I think the best part about it is when you're travelling and you don't have to search so hard to find the type of music you want to hear.

Are there any like...East Asian music stations (Chinese/Taiwanese, Japanese, Korean)? If there was, it might be worth it for me.
ericrwalker 10-10-2005, 03:33 PM well xm doesn't have Asian stations and you can check them at the website I posted.... Sirius doesn't seem to either but they have a world station...not sure exactly what's on it.

what languages do you speak? I believe I saw your desktop on another thread....I believe it was a picture at a christening...there was a girl holding flowers... Made me think I need to move out to cali ....Not enough asian girls where I live...though I am only 2 hours from NYC...I prefer chinese/taiwanese or Korean. Dated a Japanese...but I found that most of them seem to be too materialistic for me.

I speak some Mandarin and Hokkien, just a little Cantonese, and a few bits of Hakka.
You do need to move...all the Asian girls at Berkeley look the same after a while
Nothing on that list interested me too much...wouldn't be worth it for me to use Satellite Radio.
fotodad 10-10-2005, 05:03 PM There is a Korean talk channel, but I didn't see any Asian music channels other than the afore mentioned "World" music channels.

BenjiBoy650 10-11-2005, 02:30 PM Ya I haven't seen the guy though :dunno:
Not a huge fan of him. He's just another item for white people to look at and go "haha Asians are stuuuupid"
Bet you guys didn't know that he's mentally slow. He got into Berkeley with some disability.

Don't worry Benji not all white people are out to pick on Asians. :dude:
