My heart goes out to the people that are losing their homes!
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA (KGO) -- A large wildfire in the Santa Cruz Mountains has expanded to over 3,000 acres and could reach 10,000 acres.
The fire was first reported near Summit and Ormsby roads and is in the mountain range that separates Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties. Wind is moving the Summit Fire to the southwest - nearing the town of Corralitos. Smoke has been reported as far south as San Luis Obispo. To help with relief efforts, Santa Cruz County has issued a proclamation of a local emergency.
Governor Schwarzenegger said that the state has sent excellent resources to the fire. CalFire is responding with 500 firefighters on the ground, seven air tankers and three helicopters. The blaze is sending thick plumes of smoke into the air with wind gusts up to 50 mph. Heavy brush and timber is also making it difficult to fight the fire.
Evacuations
A summer camp was evacuated with up to 200 kids in the Highlands Canyon area. Over 1,400 residents have undergone voluntary evacuations around Eureka Canyon Road. About 320 homes were under mandatory evacuation orders. At least 12 structures have been destroyed and 40 are being threatened.
Evacuation sites have been set up at Loma Prieta Elementary School, C.T. English Middle School and Mount Madonna County Park. Road closures have been ordered for Summit, Mount Madonna and Pole Line Roads.
Evacuations numbers for the public:
* 831 335-5355
