i always used it in my automatics too though! ;) figure it's a good habit to be in!

never heard of a better idea to always use your ebrake, be it automatic or stick.

heres why..

i come from a country where cars left in gear would lurch forward when started unless you had your foot on the clutch. (yes cars in pakistan are backwards enough that you dont have the clutch depressed safety system for you to start the car)

people would leave their car in gear to prevent it from rolling. a good well tuned handbrake will do the job just as good.

why you should use the handbrake on auto, because you rather not put the load on the little notch in your transmission on park, ESPECIALLY if you are on a hill..
thats the lil roll you feel when your 3500 lb car rolls forward after you have it in park and you lift off the brake and rool and shudder car hits the notch. use ebrake and that doesnt happen.

my 2 cents.

I NEVER use the ebrake on my manual '90 Bronco II unless on a hill. Same for my automatic vehicles.

I used to forget to depress the clutch on my '82 Datsun pickup when starting, and since there was no safety I would lurch forward like an idiot.

A BIZILLION years ago, when I was taught to drive by my daddy.... he said it was sure a lot cheaper to replace the brakes then a tranny.... auto or not.

It's actually the "parking paw" that will wear if you don't use it on an AT.

I know of more people that drive AT's NOT using the ebrake than ones driving MT's.

i only use the ebrake when parking on a steep incline like a hill or a pile of snow.

I am one of those always people...Auto or manual..
It will keep the rear brake adjustment correct unless there is a problem in the adjuster mechanism..
It is a habit just like seat belts.
I have also been known to use when someone tailgates so they think my brake lights don't work and they back off:D

The main reason it is there is because of its name..Emergency and if not in working order and properly adjusted then it is useless!!

I use my ebrake periodically to test the reflexes of the driver behind me. I give that sucker a good tug up in the Accord to see how the guy behind me reacts.

I voted almost never, only on a hill or something. But this is somewhat misleading b/c it happens about once a week with my automatic. Of course I only get to drive it about once a week. Several places I park have a slight incline to them. I have also taught my wife to use the parking brake as well.

I always set the parking brake & then put the car in park.

Agree with the Princess. Brakes are cheaper than transmissions. I always set the ebrake (don't they call them "parking brakes" now instead of ebrakes (especially with the floor moounted ones)? while still having a foot on the brake so the transmissionn will not roll against the pawl.

 I was just kidding.

I use my emergency brake all the time. In both cars.

I just saw a yellow Mustang Cobra convertible roll out into the middle of the street right in front of me...now I will put the car in gear too, on top of the ebrake :)

I always use it after it snows or in an empty parking lot to do my 180s. :D . couple weeks ago I was at Quiznos and was making a turn in the parking lot. After I started turning I realized I wasnt going to make it, so I pulled the e-brake and spun around just enough to make my turn.

Yes Yes Yes!!

First gear will cover the front wheels.

Handbrake covers the back.

With all the wheels covered I am satisfied.

ALWAYS

If MT, reverse and wheels curbed if on a hill.
If AT, park and wheels curbed if on a hill.
Also always set parking brake with foot on brake pedal and tranny in it correct gear or park. Then take foot off brake to keep static load off tranny.
If down hill front of wheels curbed. If up hill rear of wheels curbed.
I hate to see driverless cars rolling.

I have an auto and the only time I don't use it is in my garage

Not sure why but I don't like using it in my garage. It's totally level and not really necessary.

i use mine when im on any kind of incline, also at the airport on the runway... reverse 180 and 180....... sort of wish the car was a RWD so i could pull off some BA drifting power slide stuff like i do in my moms LS v8, and my works explorer(yes you can do some pretty crazy sh^t in a suv) oh well

Always use mine. I learned to drive in a manual Saturn, so it became a habit, even though my own cars have always been automatic.

even though my own cars have always been automatic.

I go above and beyond on auto cars. From D, foot on the brake --> N, then apply handbrake, let it roll, then into park. I like my method, and only takes an extra second :)

I've done a similar thing, if someone on my bumber and I can't lose them....I try slowing down below the speed limit they are still on my A$$ then try speeding above the limit and if they are still there I slow with the ebrake,....not pull it hard. a good tug is crazy.

In MT cars, I always park with the handbrake on and the transmission in gear (1st most of the time, Reverse if the car is nose down on a hill).

On auto vehicles, I use the handbrake unless it's one of those silly foot-operated ones.

The silliest thing I ever found was a Ford Ranger pickup with an MT *and* a foot operated parking-brake. I think you need three feet to do a proper hill start in that thing, lol.

Why do you guys put it in reverse when facing downhill?

Why do you guys put it in reverse when facing downhill?

I was just wondering that myself. I don't know about cars but my ATV's I had for example if I turned it off and had it in first gear I could push it backwards...so in order for not not to roll backwards when I had it in my truck I would strap it down and put in in reverse...My thoughts were, is this true for a car too?

I always used the e-brake weather I'm driving a MT or AT... For an AT, it's just better for the tranny.. For the MT.... it's to keep the car from rolling.

Why do you guys leave the car in gear when you park you MT? I find that a wheel towards the curb and the ebrake set is sufficient enough 99% of the time. I leave it in gear only when I park on a steep hill or a moderate hill after I drove through rain. The ebrake on Hondas are very good. I hated leaving the car in gear since I had a remote starter installed. I had to disable it every time I leave it in gear.

My main problem is most of my area is hills.

I try to use common sense and not leave it in gear when I'm parked on a level surface. If somebody hits you while you're parked and it's in gear, I think you will find the engine/tranny will be damaged too.

Always. The front seat video is wired to the e-brake as a safety interlock.
