View Full Version : Found the rattle!
dbassett74 05-29-2008, 07:40 AM Persistence definitely pays. As some of you may know, I have complained here in the past about a pesky rattle that seemed to have been coming from the driver door somewhere. So I ended up pulling off the door panel, but the rattle was still there in all it's glory.
Because the rattle was just as loud with the panel on as with it off, I came to the logical conclusion that it could not be inside the actual door, so I felt pretty strongly about eliminating that as a possible source of the rattle and decided to focus my attention elsewhere at that point.
So I found a bumpy road and made a few pass on it. It became more and more apparent that the sound seemed to instead be emanating from the dash. So I pulled over, opened the door and banged on the left side of the dash, and what do you know?? It rattled like an SOB.
I went home and pulled off the panel. I banged on it again and it still rattled. There are some metal brackets in there that seem to be clanging against each other. I think I will put some foam in there or something tonight to see if that fixes it.
Another possible source of rattle is the apparently cheap quality e-brake handle. If you bank on your e-brake handle, you should hear some rattling there as well.
Wow, I wonder how many of these cars has this rattle in the left side dash?? Can some of you open your door and bang on the left side of the dash and let me know if you hear some rattling?
MySilver_08 05-29-2008, 07:55 AM 478 miles, no rattle anywhere....yet.
xxDaJackalxx 05-29-2008, 08:03 AM 1360mi. no rattles
elp_jc 05-29-2008, 08:10 AM Can't believe ALL rattles on this car are exactly like the ones on my GTO. It's funny. The one on my dash is on the steering column itself. Two pieces of sheet metal are banging together. Haven't tackled that job yet, but just like you, somebody found the source. A few panels have to come off, and the fix involves sticking a thin blade screwdriver, and prying the suckers apart. Sounds like it's the same kind of deal on this car. Nobody makes solid cars anymore, so we'll have to live with this kind of thing WHATEVER we drive. And I'll always be fixing them myself as well. Good find buddy. Take care.

DevinKato 05-29-2008, 08:12 AM 7600 miles. No rattles. Unless you count my sunglasses in the holder. Took me 2 hours to figure out they were causing it.

Ditto...Didn't take me 2 hours, but I did notice a rattle and found it to be my sunglasses in the holder. I need to get some thicker rubber and line the sunglesses holder better..In retrospect I should have done it when I had the holder out adding the Hacked homelink. ;)
jeffreyhuhn 05-29-2008, 08:17 AM almost 8500 miles and zero rattles.

You'd think with them designing these cars on computers nowadays they'd be able to better design things so as not to bang against each other. I can't believe how cheap the e-brake handle is in this car. A 92 Camry has a more solid e-brake handle...
denvrfan 05-29-2008, 08:34 AM 1300 miles- no rattles yet....knock on hard plastic.

Was your car made in Texas by chance? I remember when I bought my car back in Jan, the dealer said they had some cars made in Texas that had a loose dash board. They were brought back in and the dealer tightened them up.
Kmart925 05-29-2008, 09:32 AM 5000 mi. and i constantly hear a rattle coming from the glove box. i hate it but been to lazy to fix it. anyone else have some rattles coming from the passanger side?
dbassett74 05-29-2008, 09:34 AM I don't recall where, but I don't think it was TX.
clewttu 05-29-2008, 09:45 AM I dont think honda manufactures anything in TX, could be wrong though

This was back in Jan so I don't remember if she said they were built in Texas or shipped from Texas. Either way, I know for sure she said the cars coming from Texas had loose dashboards.

+1 dunno the solution to it yet... might try some weatherstripping on the glove box door edge.
dbassett74 05-29-2008, 10:23 AM I don't have any rattles from the glove.
turbodave 05-29-2008, 10:28 AM Accords are manufactured in Marysville OH. And Japan.
USAFRET 05-29-2008, 10:56 AM Glad you found and cured your rattle, I have not. Mine emanates from the upper portion of the dash on the passenger side. Sounds like it just behind the air bag door. Needless to say I'm not about to take that a part, and the dealer seems reluctant as well.
I am annoyed by this in an otherwise wonderfully designed and built car.
At 8,000 miles I've noticed two rattles.
One is in the dash around the glove box but I think its the silver trim piece above the glove box. When pressing on it the rattle goes away. This comes and goes but never lasts more than a few minutes. I believe the trim piece pulls straight out. I'm going to try to shim it with felt.
The rear deck rattle, buzzes and creaks on days with extreme temp changes i.e. 45 degrees in the morning and 70 degrees by afternoon. If it stays cool out or hot with no extreme changes its fine, rough or smooth roads. It's easy enough to access it. Put the rear seat down and pop a few clips and you can easily lift the forward edge to peer under it. I'm going to put felt or rubber stoppers under there to see if it helps to quell it.

Have you opened your passenger door and bang on the very right side of your dash? I'm wondering if it's the same place, but on the opposite side of mine??
I totally agree. It is extremely annoying, especially since I got away from American cars for this very reason. Every American car I've owned rattled like an SOB. Every Japanese car that I have ridden in, was solid as a rock, until this one. And this is the newest Japanese car I've ever driven! Go figure...

I have same rattle noise coming from driver side. Will try banging on the left side of dash today.
Can you post some picture when you open this & will put foam in there? I want to see how to open dash.
btw what is SOB?
Kmart925 05-29-2008, 11:51 AM SOB: son of a biiiiaaaattttch :D

LMAO DEVIN!!!! Dee Dee Dee!!!! :) guess you need to turn down the Bass...... :)
dbassett74 05-30-2008, 07:41 AM Well guys, turns out it was a loose screw that had a washer on it that was banging against the metal that the plastic dash panel bolts too under the steering column to the left. This was probably a result of the after market security system installation because there are some ground wires going to it that don't look factory. Wow, I can't believe how much noise a .25" washer can make. Tightened it up and not a single rattle now!

Glad you found it.
I remember when I bought my car, they were trying to sell me dealer installed security system. I asked them to remove it. When I was picking up car in the evening he forget to take it off & ran off to un-install it very quickly.
I think I have the rattle from same screw or something.
Can you post pic. so that I know where to look exactly?
Thanks for help..
lldsandsll 05-30-2008, 10:03 AM so ya had a screw loose...

I didn't get a pic while it was off and don't really want to pull the panels back off again. However, it's fairly easy to find and I will try to explain it here on my lunch brake in a bit... Hang tight... ;-)
jblaust 05-30-2008, 03:58 PM 4500 miles no rattles!

Haha I hate to resurrect a thread that's so old. However, I may be facing this same problem. I'd appreciate it if anyone could explain how to get the side panel off or whatever else may be needed to isolate this problem.
Asher 03-10-2009, 11:31 PM I have the rattle now too... anyone have pics of the culprit?
zefpark 03-11-2009, 03:53 PM i got 19500miles.... get them sometimes...
