I got tired of waiting for Honda to get off their collective butts and fix my car, so I did it myself.
My car is the '04 6 speed with the very loud hissing sound.

I fixed it myself.

Here's what I found:
The noise (as of Wed the 12th) was SO loud that I couldn't stand it any more. It easily exceeded volume 20 on the radio.

I decided to take off the winter tires, and put the Michelins back on.
Drove the car, noise 60% gone.

I experimented with various other tire types, the more aggressive sipes and/or directional tread aggravates the condition much more. A customer of our shops allowed me to try out his tires, from his '03, he had Costco cheapies with a semi siped all season tread, the noise was there, more than the michelins, less than my winter Dunlops.

I had been thinking that over the past two months that the bearing heatshield that was changed made the noise louder, I wondered if it was amplifiying a possilbly normal noise.

I had purchased a shield from an online Honda parts source, so I could see how it was made. By it's shape and construction I felt it could act like a megaphone.

On Thursday the 13th, I installed my modified shield. I laminated the heatshield on the side that faces the intermediate shaft bearing with Dynamat extreme (an aluminum coated asphalt sheet soundproofing product)
I also put a layer on the shield away from where it is closest to the rear bank primary catalyst.

I also made an inner fender liner (rubber) to cover about 50% of the opening around the right axle shaft and tie rod. The heatshield is dirrectly open to the center of the right side tire, so I thought that any way to prevent sound from getting to the shield, while still allowing some airflow to it for cooling, would prevent sound amplification.

I drove the car home from work that night, it was SILENT.. YES!!!!!!!!
On my drive to work Friday and on my longer ride Friday night to do some errands and to home it was again like it was in the beginning, SILENT.

I am going to drive it a week like this, then put my winters back on, if there's a little noise, at least I'll know where it's coming from and why.

I wonder if Honda would want to know this?
