View Full Version : Sticky Accelorator

Since sometime this past winter the accelorator has been quite sticky after the car has been sitting for a few hours. Its gotten to the point where when you hop in you have to push fairly hard before the pedal will give, and with that force it then really gives and the car lurches. It doesn't just happen once either, if you let off and repress the pedal it will not move again untill a good amount of force is applied, less than at first though. This continues with a decreasing amount of force needed each time until its smooth like it should be. Has anyone else had this problem? Would a quick WD-40 job fix it, or would that not be a good thing to try? Its not so much that its dangerous, because we know its going to happen, and it doesn't get stuck open, just closed, but it is a pain, and makes it seem that whoever is driving has never experienced something with more than like 20 horsepower before in their lives.

I have the some problem with my 98 Accord. Unlike the previous post, mine only occurs the first time I depress the accelerator after sitting for one or more hours. Is there a service bulletin that applies?

Awesome, Thanks. I often forget there is a search feature.

Thanks for the info. I removed the air inlet hose and found significant sticky black build up around the butterfly. I will be buying throttle body cleaner this afternoon and attempting the recommended cleaning procedure.

I cleaned the sticky residue and the problem went away. Now I get to do the same on my father-in-laws '98 Accord. Thanks for the solution.
