View Full Version : My 6MT is within engine trouble TSB; What do do???
elp_jc 06-02-2008, 07:09 PM Hey gang. Need your advice. Just sold my GTO (will be picked up Friday), so now I can buy the 6MT I ordered.
As some of you know, I ordered my 6MT red/black a week ago, and was going to take a month more to get here, but will be here THIS WEEK. Timing sounds perfect, as I sold the GTO much sooner than expected, but it's NOT, because this car is within the TSB range. For the ones who don't know what the heck I'm talking about, there's a TSB that affects ALL V6 Accords for bad 'rocker shaft bridges' (excessive clearance), so it's only a matter of time before they need to be replaced IMO. The 6MT is not safe until VIN xxx027012 (A5 V6 coupes until 004773, and A5 V6 sedans until 005150) and 'my' car (to arrive this week) is smack in the middle: 014539 :bawl:.
TSBs are not recalls, but in this case, with excessive clearance on the bridges (like if you had driven the car for 100K miles), I'd want that fixed. Plus with my luck, mine would NEED it anyway. Thing is I DON'T want the engine touched on my new car. Asked dealer to tell me exactly what is involved in the fix, but with VTEC and all, I bet cams will have to come off, and it's not an easy job. This is the kind of thing you do to your engine at 100,000 miles folks.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO????
I don't think I can wait another month for a 'healthy' 6MT :bawling: , so it's either this car or something else. I'm so tired of my f***ing luck with cars. Comments welcome guys.

That on top of the 3rd gear problem? Bummer...
elp_jc 06-02-2008, 08:09 PM That on top of the 3rd gear problem?
Now that you mention it, what's the deal with that? Read about 2 people having trouble with it, but one of them said it started to go away with use, as if it needed break-in. Sounds un-Honda, but that's what happened to my GTO: tranny got much smoother after a few thousand miles, and a reluctant 2nd gear (especially when cold) now engages perfectly. But yes, I'm trying to get away from those 'idiosyncrasies', so that's not good news to me for sure.

SatinSilver 06-03-2008, 07:08 AM I'd wait till its fixed at the factory even if that means waiting a month. Sell the gto as planned and perhaps get a loaner(not too likely) from the dealer till yours arrives. Around here in Cleveland toyota dealers have rental cars which run about $400/month.
Another option if you want something right away is too consider the 4cyl. Or at least test drive it..you may light it better. Its lighter and seems not to have the 3gear prob if I'm not mistaken.
elp_jc 06-03-2008, 10:28 AM Car just arrived this morning. Dealer couldn't find the TSB, and I don't see a number listed here. Does anybody have it?
Dealer only holds the car until today, so I have no choice but to go drive it, and if I deem the engine too noisy, will let it go, and find something else. I don't think VIN xxx027012 will be reach next month; it's probably going to take several. Take care.

Nothing to worry about. If you hear a ticking noise that means your engine *might* be affected. A ticking sound could be something not necessarily related to the cause described in the TSB. The fix is to simply loosen and retorque the bolts for the rocker shaft bridge which is accessible by lifting up the valve cover on top of the engine.
As for the 3rd gear TSB, it affects some more than others. I tend to use a firm hand when shifting. Tho I can feel occasional resistance in 3rd, it hasn't been an issue at all. Others that have 7th gen V6 6MTs are mixed, too. It affects some more than others.
Pick up your car, take it easy during break in, and then enjoy the crap out of it. Keep your ears and eyes open and if any symptoms arise, have them addressed.

x2...what he said. I haven't had any unusual engine noise at all. No ticking. 3rd gear was a little sticky before but seems like it has broken in now with no more issues.

Maybe you should find an honest dealer.
elp_jc 06-03-2008, 04:46 PM Thanks a bunch guys; what a crowd. Clewttu posted both TSBs affecting the 6MT, and immediately determined it wasn't a big deal indeed. Just wanted to know some facts, which are pretty much what 'Trip' mentioned. In fact, if I have the issue, I'd fix it myself. And new 6MTs are out of the 2nd TSB. That's good news, because that one I didn't like. Thanks again gang.

That's a problem that Honda has addressed about their 6MTs.
