View Full Version : Sad day - hail on my brand new Accord
tkubik 06-17-2008, 03:34 PM Less then 4k on my I4 EX-L and got hit by a freak hail storm in toronto. About 50 dents on hood, roof and trunk lid. I am being told by friend of friend who owns body shop that hood will have to be replaced for sure as heat of engine may cause problems if they use PDR. Not sure about the rest of damage yet. Real bummer as it will never be the same. Anyone else ever have a similar experience? I bet this will be a big bill.
SatinSilver 06-17-2008, 03:47 PM Sorry to hear about that. I had this happen to me on my 94 Civic..it was only a few years old at the time. The car was white so it was nearly impossible to see the damage. I never had it fixed. What color is yours?
leggysoe 06-17-2008, 03:50 PM There was a hail storm in austin few weeks ago and local body shops and PDRs were full of cars for months lol. I pay $20 or so in addition to my rent each month for a covered parking lot and it was a damn nice investment. My friend didn't think it was worth it and his estimate came out to be $3000. (06 Hyundai Sonata)
tkubik 06-17-2008, 03:58 PM Dark Grey.. so it is quite visible when the sun hits it right. Insurance says they will cover all of it less the $300 deductible. My only concern is if they have to rip off the roof and redo it.. It will never be the same. Friend of mine who works for a local insurer says that sometimes on a new car they will write it off if the hail damage is bad enough as it could easily be $5-7k+ if each panel is f'd.

Not trying to be funny or anything, but go at with a rubber ball-point hammer.
tkubik 06-17-2008, 04:02 PM :) couple more dents and it very well might be a write off.
Are there things I should watch for when dealing with a body shop? What concerns me is the color match between any painting they will have to do and the undamaged panels.

Its a new car, so color match should be pretty easy. As dealing with body shops, be sure to take pictures of your car prior to getting it in.
tkubik 06-17-2008, 04:42 PM Thanks for the advice. So far from what I have read the trunk and hood are a pretty simple replace. Most people say the roof they actually have to cut off and redo. That seems like a scary repair especially with all the sunroof stuff in there. Anybody ever have a roof repaired? Hopefully they can use PDR techniques on it.

I'm pretty sure that is insurance fraud :thumbsdow
daavo 06-17-2008, 05:32 PM I'm pretty sure pdr can get most of the dents out of the roof without cutting it off. The only problem is the cross bracing under the roof ... that can cause a problem if the dents are directly over it.
I actually bought my last Accord with hail damage and got it at a huge discount. Sold it with no trouble either and got a good return.
hermann 06-17-2008, 06:06 PM Dude, so sad to hear that. It happened to my 05 when it was about a year old. PDR did the trick. It was not even noticed when I recently traded it in. Also it was not reported to CarFax. I asked to see the report when I traded. Got a nice comment from the dealer on how well the Honda paint held up. Not a common compliment these days with the thin crappy baked on paint.

Rubber ball-point hammer? What's that? I've seen and used a lot of tools, but never seen or heard of a such a thing, is that like a hail-dents-replicator?
BTW, you are not suggesting OP to intentionally make the damage worse so that insurance can write-off the car, are you? :dunno:

I don't think a Rubber ball-point hammer exists YET, but I'm sure I could get a mold of a ball-point hammer and pour plastic into it maybe?
IMO, over the lifetime of your car, insurances will charge you a couple of thousand dollars, and in the process even refuse some fixes which might not have been cause by you (ie minor hit-and-runs just below the deductible). If it really is as bad as he describe, three more dents are not gonna hurt IMO. Not suggesting anything, just my take on it.
iaccord08 06-17-2008, 08:39 PM Sorry to hear about your car tkubik. Not much you can do about it when mother nature gets pissed off. This climate change really sucks big time!
camdion1 06-17-2008, 09:26 PM Its been a bad week for some of our members here. Post Friday the 13th??? I better keep mine in the Garage for a few

buuckznguyen 06-17-2008, 11:10 PM The day before the hailstorm in Toronto I parked my car in the garage and when it hailed I was glad I decided to park in the garage

And why would this new *tool* be necessary? :dunno: FWIW, it's ball-peen hammer, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball-peen_hammer , and it's not molded, it's cast and forged.

Only a couple of thousand dollars for insurance over the lifetime of your car? That's quite a bargain especially in Vancouver and for your age, or you only keep your car for a couple of years! I'm paying $1K a year with 25+ years of driving experience and a perfectly clean no claim, no ticket record.
One of the contributor for the increase of insurance premium (which we ALL have to pay for) is false/fraudulent insurance claims, and this is exactly what is being suggested.

Correction noted, pall-peen it is. Must have been thinking of a pen at the time.
Now you said your paying $1K a year for insurance with a 25+ year clean no claim report. I have to pay $3000 a year with 4 years of experience and 15% off AND a clean record. Thats 3 times what you have to spend. Let alone the fact that you must probably be permanently employed somewhere and I'm a student. If I really were to exaggerate, I could get myself a civic with the money I pay for 5 years of insurance. It obviously does not justify insurance fraud, but IMO if the car is already as messed up as it is, it would not matter much what else he does to it. just my 2 cents
jang859 06-18-2008, 08:39 AM why is anyone paying that much for insurance? i'm 22 and I pay 70 something a month...
