View Full Version : 2008 Honda Accord Radio Removal Instructions
chriswessner 07-06-2008, 07:09 AM Hi All
First of all, thanks to DevinKato on here! Between his pics with descriptions and crutchfields bare bones text only instructions i braved the install of my USA Spec ipod adapter in my new accord last night.
Unit works well, it still allows XM, the ipod control, and the use of my in dash cd changer by hitting the CD button again. Pretty exicted that I have this done already, now next is XM To Sirus conversion!
Thanks to those who post on these threads, i decided to take pics of my install since i couldn't find a detailed description of this on the web. Hope this helps those debating doing anything like this, really easy!!! ** Sorry but don't know how to embed links so had to coordinate pics with numbers for steps.
2008 Honda Accord Radio Removal – Non Nav Unit
Tools needed” 8mm socket, Philips head screw driver, small and med sized. Some heavy duty towels to keep form scratching panels and some sort of tape(painters tape works well)
1. Open console storage door. Pull up console trim panel to release clips, disconnect harness and remove panel. You will pull up first at the area circled below.
2. Pull up the parking break and set the trans to neutral. The entire top to the center console is held in by clips. **(note, once removed be sure to check that the clip brackets stayed on the pegs on the panel, if not in the pic below find the clips, remove them and place them on the posts on the console top so your ready to put it back into place when complete)
3. Remove two Philips screws exposed by removal of console trim panel.
4. Place gear shift in lowest position.
5. Open dash storage pocket and remove two Philips screws located inside. Remove storage pocket assembly. ( really up and in, have to get down low to see these two….
6. Next you need to pull out the storage boxes… *** before you do this tape up the shift lever and all surrounding trim panels, they scratch easily when removing these boxes. Its very hard to pull these out without separating the two boxes, look at the sides and you will see 4 screws(2 on each side), remove these 4 and then you can separate them and ‘easily’ get them out.
*** NOTE ** the first part of removing the center console area is thanks to DevinKato on DriveAccord.net http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=16709&page=6
chriswessner 07-06-2008, 07:12 AM 7. Remove two 8mm screws securing lower radio bracket to dash. (these are very hard to see, best to use the 8mm socket to take these out) *** I forgot to take this pic. Once you have the storage compartments out, you can just barely see them about halfway in the hole directly under the radio, one on the left and one on the right.
8. Open glove box door. Pull RH dash trim strip toward rear of vehicle to release eight clips and remove strip. You can just use your hands to do this once glove box is open.
9. Pry out LH dash trim strip to release two clips and remove trim strip.
10. Remove the two Philips screws now that you have both trim panels removed.
11. Pull receiver/heater control assembly toward rear of vehicle to release nine clips. This was a bit hard with that many clips, but start at the bottom where you can get a grip and gently start working them loose. Again make sure you pull out any clips that stayed in the cars dash
12. Once the Radio is out you now will see three plugs on the tops for climate control, remove these as its easier to get to the Radio plugs after there gone.
13. You can now pull the radio further out, and unplug the top grey connector on the back of the Radio, you can now see the plug for the Satellite Radio.
Now you put everything back in reverse order. Good Luck!

Did you find it difficult to get these out? Mine just spun. I had to wedge a flathead underneath the plastic and apply outward pressure while unscrewing them to get them out. It was a PITA.

howdy,
no, actually them came out quite easily. The hardest part for me was removing the damn radio itself with all ofthose plastic clips!

Ok Stupid ?, what does everyone mean by 'sticky this' ??
thanks
brickman 07-08-2008, 07:24 AM A "sticky" thread is one that the mods will change to always stay at the top of a category for easy future reference. Normally threads will get pushed down chronologically as other threads are started.

hi there, chris. "sticky" denotes the thread as a useful in a particular way. it is marked by the mods so that it appears on the top of the page when you view a particular forum.
check 8th Gen forum thread... the threads listed on top of each page are "stickies" -- first two posts has "sticky" before the topic titles and push pins next to the paper clip symbols under "Ratings".
hope this helps...

Glimpse 07-28-2008, 02:30 PM Sorry to be annoying if I am missing something obvious here, but am I correct in assuming that there is one connector with speaker outputs from the stereo and eq going to the factory amp and another connector coming out of the amp and going to the speakers?
What I would like to do is grab clean, unamplified signal at connector 1 and then after I pass it through my amp, feed it back into connector 2 leading to the speakers.
Please advise... :)

SupaStar 08-13-2008, 05:22 PM What's the chord/cable you're using to connet the ipod (or what all do I need? I don't want to connect it to the AUX plug if possible) and where did you connect it? I may have missed it, but plese be patient with I'm VERY new to this and frustared becasue I just spent 5 hours at Circuit City and they couldn't install my satellite radio. Thank-you
chriswessner 08-13-2008, 06:45 PM hi there,
no worries. this is what i put in my accord. It plugs into the same plug where the satellite radio plugs into the back of the radio. So for my car, i unplugged the xm, and plugged in the ipod unit, then plugged the satellite radio plug into the extra side plug on the ipod interface cable.
http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=305250&i=581PA11H2Y&search=ipod&tp=120
So when i hit CD if if press it a 2nd time, CDC displays like cd changer control mode, and the 6 playlists i named HONDA 1, HONDA 2 etc are now controllable via the standard radio controls.
I had plenty of room behind the radio so put that converter in the dash and then put my ipod plug in the center console arm rest.
hit me back if you have any questions.
chriswessner 08-13-2008, 06:48 PM FYI , don't pay the guys at Circuit City and Best buy to install radios.
You can do them yourself! And if your close to PA I would do it for you or help, very easy.
Check out this location for Sirius or XM, not sure what your looking to get.

sqa4life 08-20-2008, 09:03 AM wow, nice write up and pictures.
This instructions will help me remove the HU later.
Anyone know where I can find the instruction on how to hook up an amp to the 08 Accord EX sedan?

does this model show the ipod text? artist, song, etc?
Dreccord 09-05-2008, 08:00 PM I have the USA SPEC iPod adapter from my Element that I want to install in my Accord sedan EX (no XM). Does anyone know if it will work with this particular factory HU before I take it apart?
chachu 09-12-2008, 01:33 PM I often visit these forums, but joined just now coz of my queation,
chruswessner, you installed you ipod adapter on your car it has XM rite?
My question is similar to the above one.
im from the middle east, and we the accord we get here dose not have XM option so if i wanted to install such a kit would it work?
We do have 6 cd changer and aux in though!
chriswessner 09-12-2008, 03:01 PM hi
i think if it has the cd changer controls you should be able to do this, not 100% on this but would think it would work.
Try checking out their website: http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=305250&i=581PA11H2Y&tp=120
i bugy all of my audio products from Crutchfield and trust their information on their website. As it states on there it goes into any radio with CD changer controls. just plug in your cars informtaion, the link i have is for a Accord 08 sedan with regular radio.
good luck!
Dreccord 09-16-2008, 07:03 PM Thanks for the reply. The reason why I'm skeptical is that the USA SPEC adapter is supposed to connect to the CD changer input of the radio, but my particular factory radio already has an in-dash CD changer.
chriswessner 09-16-2008, 09:30 PM yes, mine has the in dash cd changer and the xm satellite radio. It should still work.
the cd button on your radio should have... i can't recall now, what it says but it says something else also instead of just cd.
i believe it will work.
you get to name 5 or 6 tracks however many cd slots there are, and then use those playlists with the converter.
all you do is hit the cd button and it goes back to your cd's in the dash, hit it again and plays from the ipod. IT even works now with the iphones, the software upgrade changed something cause last year i tried this and it iddn't work with the phone.
good luck
Dreccord 09-17-2008, 06:11 PM I believe the difference between yours and mine is that if you have xm, then your cd changer is a separate component mounted right below the radio, and my changer is already integrated inside the radio.
Does anyone else have the non-xm radio that can confirm this will work?
chriswessner 09-18-2008, 12:34 AM Not sure if yours is truly different or not, but i enter all 6 cd's into the same slot in the radio. Its embedded within the radio.
So if you mean its separate as in like lower in the dash as an add on, then that is not what i have.
Hope this helps.
Dreccord 09-18-2008, 11:28 AM Cool I'll give it a try!
dbassett74 10-18-2008, 09:03 AM 7. Remove two 8mm screws securing lower radio bracket to dash. I'm having a problem with this step. I don't see these things. I think the problem is mine is the premium system with a CD changer already installed. I'm assuming the CD changer is hiding these screws, but I can't figure out how to get the CD changer out. Did you ever get the 09 CD changer installed? Can you tell me how you installed it so I can reverse that to figure out how to remove it?? I'm a little concerned about pulling too hard on something.
chriswessner 10-18-2008, 02:51 PM hi there
Not sure what changer you have. I am not home right now with the car otherwise i could send you a picture of my radio. I have the 08 sedan exl. I have the radio in the dash stock with the cd changer that is built right in with the main radio. Its not a separate component below it or anything like that, do you have a separate one below it?
I remove the empty tray below the radio along with the storage comparment below the empty open slot and the Radio. Once these two are out, you can then look back into the bottom of the Radio to see the two screws to take out.
Can you send a pic of your dash? Where do you live?
Let me know if I can be of any more help.
good luck.
Lenrage 10-24-2008, 05:58 PM I have a big problem.........My 2008 accord NAVI...I have removed all the other parts but I cannot yank out that factory radio........I removed the 2 screws but when I pull out the unit......It doesnt come out..........I almost broke the freeking unit and there is no way for me to reach the Sat harness to install a PXAMG ipod interface.
Is there any other trick or screws that Im missing.......I even tried a belt behind the unit to help me pry it out without any success........There must be other screws for the NAVi radio unit..........
Help please........my car is all dissasemble
chriswessner 10-24-2008, 06:21 PM hi
I don't know the difference between one with Nav vs one without nav... however there are the two screw on either side of the radio once you removal those trim strips on the dash as in my pics.
Then remove the pockets in the bottom, there are two screws in and basically going directly vertical in that area holding the radio to that metal bracket, these are almost impossible to see, look in where the pockets are and up, you almost can't see them at all. there are two, one on the left and one on the right, about half way back in that slot.
Where do you live?
good luck
Lenrage 10-24-2008, 07:29 PM That was it..........thanks chriswessner........almost broke the freeking radio before seeing thoses 2 screws

What he said.. Yes, there are two additional screws in addition to the two screws that you can see on the front after removing the trim pieces. They are hard to see but if you reach up under the radio after removing all the storage bins and the CD changer, you should be able to feel to screws on either side under the radio. I don't even think a picture would help. What might help is if you try to follow the metal bracket that you can see once the CD changer is removed and move you're hand upward. This whole metal bracket will come out after removing these two "hidden" screws. So use some intuition in trying to figure out how to remove that bracket and the radio will come out.
Also, keep in mind with the NAVI unit (unlike the regular unit), you must first also remove the panel above the radio that contains the HVAC vents. This panel will prevent the radio from coming out as well. It is only held in place by clips on each side, no screws. I advice you to get a trim removal tool to get up under the panel. Be careful not to press down to hard and damage the spongy dash material. I did a little, but it's not too visible.
Gary Accord 11-20-2008, 06:54 PM are there any instructions to remove the radio from a 2004 accord. i have searched high and low and found links but they dont work. Please help thx
wsoehren 01-04-2009, 07:07 AM Thanks for the great instructions. Everything was just as you stated. I installed a Dice i-Honda-R4 Silverline module for direct connect of my iPod to the stereo system. Everything is working well. Not so sure about the iPod navigation (kind of cumbersome) using the Dice module, but the music sounds great.
Lara92 01-05-2009, 06:43 AM Can the stereo rca jacks be used for another mp3 player? (non ipod)???
Does it have a usb?
Do they make a similar adapter for IPOD with a USB??
wsoehren 01-12-2009, 12:50 AM It has an aux input similar to the one already in the center console of the Accord that can be used for any audio source.
The R4 plugs directly into the docking connector on the iPod. I have a classic iPod (80 gig). The instruction claimed it was compatible with all recent iPods and that it would charge iTouch and iPhone via the dock.
sonnyk88 01-26-2009, 12:27 PM anyone know I can reach to fm antenna connector without remove the radio unit ? I just need to get to antenna so I can use it with my HD radio.
Klutch 02-16-2009, 09:30 AM So all this crap has to be removed to remove just the HU?
rfs830 03-09-2009, 07:51 AM Im also looking at installing the USA Spec ipod adapter in my accord also. this looks hard to me as I have never tried this before but it looks like it will be ok. How long did it take you all to do all of this work.
also once you have it off were did you all put the adapter at? is there a place behide the radio you can lay it?
asaga1 03-27-2009, 06:39 PM I have a 2009 EXL Navi sedan ... will a USA SPEC PA11 HON2 work with my factory unit?

WhiteV6 04-25-2009, 06:14 PM Hey FYI for you guys, I don't know if it's the same for you as it was for me but after i re-installed my radio, 08 Coupe Non-Nav V6-6, I had to set the clock first before i could enter the radio code.
jkcheng122 06-13-2009, 09:21 PM Question:
If I'm only needing to remove the ANC connector, do I only need to look at Steps 7 through 13? I don't need to remove the center console do I?

You need to remove your shifter knob and the top portion of the center console to be able to remove the lower pocket and access the back of the radio.

it doesn't look like in this picture that the shifter knob and the top portion of center console are removed.
Also are there any pictured instructions on removing the mics in the top HomeLink console and the trunk if removing mic from those locations are easier?
JuttsAccord 08-22-2009, 11:56 PM Wish I would have found this thread b4 I pulled mine out.
woody4364 08-24-2009, 10:25 PM Anyone experience rattling after putting everything back together?
JuttsAccord 08-25-2009, 12:39 AM Check the clips and make sure that they have clipped into place or you will.
mishaaltk 12-08-2009, 09:19 PM Excellent writeup!
i did the same thing to remove my stereo system and LCD pannel to replace it with a MOTEVO GTV-HA GPS unit (OEM style). The only problem is that i dont get any audio from the chinese unit :dunno:
but the audio from the original stereo system is fine!
guess i have to look up some manuals on the cabling to figure out a solution.
thekash 12-31-2009, 09:23 AM Q for those that replaced their decks... when you removed the lower cubbie hole, in the dash, were there any tracks/mounts there? i wanna add a single-din head unit there but not sure if it would work without the side support or a harness or some sort... thanks guys!
thx, your guide was a lifesaver in knowing how to remove the radio/dash correctly to install my iphone connector.
Cheers.
