View Full Version : Recycling AEM CAI 101
RTexasF 02-15-2005, 10:42 AM This morning I remebered that I had a Cold Air Intake from the '03 Corolla I traded in. As I slurped my coffee I wondered if I could turn it into a short ram for the Accord.....HMMMM??!!
A little ingenuity and a sharp hacksaw blade resulted in the photo below. I have several more but can't seem to post them. It was going to be a start to finish type of thing but I suppose they just suck up too much space. Crapolla!!!!!!!
The result behind the wheel far exceeded my expectations.
It's quiet until you tip into the throttle about 50% then it sounds
SWEET! The Corolla sounded ricey but this does not.
Throttle response is much better and as of this morning I have torque steer in 1st when I stand on it, and can get 2nd & 3rd gear scratch at will. It simply screams to redline and gets there much quicker than before.
WOWZERS Batman! I am really pleased. The filter looks rough from the Toyota installation but it works just fine.
RTexasF 02-15-2005, 11:24 AM I left the bottom of the filter box in place for a couple of reasons.
First off, if the local inspection station doesn't buy the CARB sticker that I reglued, I can change it all back to stock in a few minutes. Second, it cushions the filter and it will still draw a bit of outside air through the box.
In the photo I reversed the plastic piece atop the tubular air intake that leads to the box (battery hold down on left), then to the cone filter. The opening used to face the rear now it faces the front. My idea is that it will have a small ram air effect while underway forcing a bit of outside air through the tube to the filter so it won't have to draw 100% underhood air.
RTexasF 02-15-2005, 11:34 AM Here's the concoction I put together for the final installation. Due to the smaller size of the pipe, the piece of rubber on the end was necessary in order to fit snugly inside the stock piece leading to the throttle body. In fact it was so snug I had to spray it with some Pam to get it to fit!
BenjiBoy650 02-15-2005, 03:32 PM I think that you should dyno it just for kicks lol good job :notworthy
RTexasF 02-15-2005, 03:51 PM Thank you. Had I done it prior and post it would have some meaning. All I have to go by is the Butt Dyno.
RTexasF 02-19-2005, 06:48 AM I see by the massive amount of responses to this thread that my ghetto short ram intake failed to impress.:bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :bawling:
Oh Well, I'm happy with the outcome.:D
jdm_cd6 07-29-2005, 11:22 PM haha looked like you cutted it off the AEM huh?

Wow, sounds like you added 30% more HP
I'd guess you'd probably see some HP gains at high rpms, but may have a net loss in power.. those dang Honda engineers have these things dialed to the nth degree!!!
As a side note...Holy cow...the OEM filter is the thickest paper filter evAR!!!
I replaced mine with a K&N, but doubt it does anything.
RTexasF 08-20-2005, 07:54 AM I can't guess what gains there were but it is definitely there. I could never get third gear scratch before period. I'm still pleased with my ghetto project.
psyshack 08-20-2005, 08:13 AM I would be pleased also. Nice little mod. Wife 05 auto I4 has the cuss word cuss word cuss word >>> MAF.
Ive given up on her car. 5 at, MAF and some other frankinstien thing in the air duct. It displays to much hate at me.
Will get 06 lx-se sedan 5mt. If theres a MAF on that one then its civic si. I will play!!!!
Good Job With Tha Mod!
RTexasF 08-20-2005, 05:58 PM Thanks! This was originally posted in Feb 05 and has been dead until now.
F6Hawk 08-20-2005, 08:30 PM I would be pleased also. Nice little mod. Wife 05 auto I4 has the cuss word cuss word cuss word >>> MAF.Correct me if I am wrong, as I am not an engine pro, but won't ALL today's fuel injected engines have a MAF?
BenjiBoy650 08-20-2005, 08:49 PM Some use a speed density meter...I think?
psyshack 08-20-2005, 09:09 PM Correct me if I am wrong, as I am not an engine pro, but won't ALL today's fuel injected engines have a MAF?
Hondas implmation of MAF on the I4 sedan auto is something right out of the cali funny papers.
After more research and seeing where they have put it in the system it is a problem. And basicly why theres no aftermarket filter systems for the sedan auto. If I wanted a worthless cali car I'd move to the land of fruits nad nuts. :)
The only way I can see to address the problem is to get another air box. Cut the area that the MAF is in and then put it in the air duct and then worry about velocitys, and volumes.
Honda just flat out has some hate for me. Ive delt with this in other cars with no problems. But it really is looking like a real problem on this one.
If the 06 sedan with 5mt is setup like this accords will get the blow off. And on to a civic. If civic shows this trend and other brands dont. Honda will get the blow off all together.
They have really went out of there way to screw up this MAF deal on the wifes sedan and I wont forgive them for it.
BenjiBoy650 08-20-2005, 09:47 PM I love how people will blow off a car for just one little thing. It's like getting a flat tire from a nail and saying you're never going to use that brand of tire again. :lmao:
04blkpearlcoupe 08-24-2005, 07:46 PM Thats an awesome DIY mod! :notworthy I'll have to try that once I get tired of the drop-in filter (which I have yet to install). There is even a local store here that sells custom intake tubing for DIY'ers.
RTexasF 09-28-2005, 11:41 AM Well, the ghetto intake will soon be gone. The factory tube started to tear and I had to goop it so it wouldn't tear further, only had blue goop,......EEWWWWW!!
I just ordered a red AEM short ram off of Ebay. I'll click a pic once it's on.
04blkpearlcoupe 09-28-2005, 12:04 PM cool. you know what you can do regarding the torn tube is buy one of those metal hose clamps just like the one on your aftermarket filter and install it over the end of the tube. It will keep things nice and tight without stressing the tube.
RTexasF 09-28-2005, 06:42 PM Thanks. This rip started going lengthways up the tube. I can contain it but it just looks awful, especially after the blue goo. I'd rather have a proper looking unit there even if there's no gain. I'm funny that way. I like to open the hood and brag about what's there rather than cringe and make excuses.
04blkpearlcoupe 09-30-2005, 01:11 AM I understand what you mean. I'm the same way. By the way, I went ahead and copied your idea for the DIY intake. I happened to see this plastic tubing that is sold in a local store for making your own custom intake. All I needed was a 6" piece and a K&N cone filter which I happened to find at a pep boys. It really does make a big difference. Even when driving slow.
I'm working on making a heat shield for it. I really need one after these last two 100 degree days. I've got a very crude prototype that works real well. It got tested today and yesterday in the 100 degree heat. Without the heat shield the car bogged after sitting in traffic for long periods but with the shield it doesn't do it anymore. I think it might be because it blocks the strong current from the cooling fan rather than because it blocks the engine heat but who cares as long as it works. I'll post pics when I finally make one out of decent looking material.
RTexasF 09-30-2005, 05:58 AM Ah come on..........let's see the shade tree version.
04blkpearlcoupe 09-30-2005, 11:29 AM haha ok I'll take some pics this evening.
BenjiBoy650 09-30-2005, 07:19 PM DIY'ers have done this on the 6th gen too with some tubing and LB couplers and stuff.
RTexasF 09-30-2005, 07:56 PM Here in TX, I need the sticker that says "It's OK".
04blkpearlcoupe 10-03-2005, 03:09 PM Ok here it is. I told you it was crude :D. Its basically a flat piece of corogated plastic (from work). The piece of tape along the one side is to cover the gap between the battery and the shield. I made it as two pieces so I can install it without removing the filter.
There is plenty of room for air to come in from the bottom which is where the colder air is since its from under the car. There's also air coming from above and around the negative side of the battery. I noticed that when its hot and the fan is blowing the current it produces around the filter is really strong and this shield blocks it pretty well.

CA requires this too. When you go to inspection/smog, put the original intake back on. I'm sure the car won't mind :)
04blkpearlcoupe 10-03-2005, 04:13 PM yea funny how its so easy to get around that :lmao:. I did it for years with my crx (but you didn't hear it from me) :D
RTexasF 10-04-2005, 07:50 PM 04 -
I think it's great! Mongo filter too, much larger than mine. HMMM size does matter!
RTexasF 10-10-2005, 02:36 PM Okay, the original ghetto filter has been retired to" The Ugly Intake Home For The Cheap". Replacement is below______. It has a new type of filter that I wasn't aware of. Here's the link:
http://trucks.aempower.com/press_events_detail.asp?aid=54 Of course now I have to buy their special cleaner that is not available! Shouldn't need it for a while so I'll wait and watch.
RTexasF 10-11-2005, 04:46 PM Actually I ordered the red one but I suppose this matches a bit better.........NAW, I STILL want the red one!
BenjiBoy650 10-11-2005, 04:51 PM I heard about the new filter, sounds interesting.
Did you notice any additional gains with the entire AEM unit?
RTexasF 10-11-2005, 05:58 PM It has a different more pleasing sound for one thing.
Wind up is quicker, possibly due to the larger filter and smoother surface inside the aluminum tube. The OEM rubber tube has a few ripples inside of it which the aluminum tube does not and it is supposedly tuned to the car.
Edit: After a day or so with the AEM it is indeed quicker to the rev limiter. Tomorrow I'll check it with the A/C on, that will tell the story.
psyshack 10-12-2005, 04:04 AM Actually I ordered the red one but I suppose this matches a bit better.........NAW, I STILL want the red one!
Yup need the red one :)
RTexasF 10-12-2005, 08:16 AM Yea, I know. I was to be notified by E-mail if the red was not available. NOT! They just sent the silver. Oh well, it's okay.......NOT!
RTexasF 10-15-2005, 11:16 AM Now that I've had some time to drive it I've found there is a huge difference between the ghetto intake and the AEM.
The AEM allows a smoother and quicker wind up. I didn't even realize that I had a touch of hesitation with the A/C on previously until it disappeared with the new short ram installed. I kept wondering what was different until I realized it just went right now from very low RPM's to high RPM's without bucking a bit from the low end.
It is ++ overall and performs better than before. Well worth the $$ in my opinion. Considerably better than stock and also several notches above the ghetto intake.
Having had two Cold Air Intakes previously I chose the shorty. The CAI's do provide more power but when it comes time to clean them it's a real pain in the arse. I didn't want to jack with it this time around.
04blkpearlcoupe 10-16-2005, 11:45 PM man that new intake looks hot! :notworthy I'm glad it turned out to be a worthy upgrade.
04blkpearlcoupe 10-22-2005, 12:33 AM Rick,
I noticed that the top bung for the IAT sensor is not attached and there doesn't seem to be anywhere to attach it. Is that how its supposed to be? I would think you'd get a check engine light with it like that.
RTexasF 10-22-2005, 12:58 AM The sensor mounts in the same area of the tube as it did stock. The hole is pre-drilled and a grommet is supplied. The IAT sensor goes into the grommet.

sorry I think what Im talking about isn't the IAT sensor. I meant the big connector with the big & little plugs/prongs. The one behind the AEM sticker.
RTexasF 10-22-2005, 01:57 AM There is a place for it also but the smaller of the two connections is left exposed. The best part is that it's all legit, the CARB number was attached to the intake when I got it out of the box.

cool thanks.
