How do you like the Meguiar's #40. I thought it might be a little too glossy for my tastes, but I haven't ever tried it.

I use the 40 for cleaning interior plastic and rubber seals, around column door panels where rubber leaves the black mark, sill plates, inner pillar covers and those type of items. It's a better cleaner than protectant! 303 is my protectant of choice.

I would like to know your estimate of the total retail value of everything in that picture...? I'm guessing $400+ including the polisher...
What do you use for:
1. Getting dried wax off of black vinyl trim / molding (like around the sunroof)?
2. Clean the dash and plastic trim?
3. Cleaning leather?
And where do you get the products in answer to the questions above?
FINAL QUESTION: Can I buy your car when you are ready for a new one?;)

The towels are decent for polishing and general cleaning.. not good for glass.. I believe Costco sells also.

Estimate is close + my PC(porter cable) and pads ring up about 200 bucks then products probably close to 300.00
I don't have a problem with dried wax on rubber and black trim.
Most polymers and acrylics don't leave white dried wax residue.
Megs 16 also is good about cleaning up well.
To clean something like that you can use WD40, Rubbing alcohol and some guys use peanut butter:dunno: I guess the peanut oil will dissolve?
Dash and plastic trim .. Megs 40 or 303 cleaner if real dirty, Woolite/water mix 1to10 for basic cleaning of interior plus leather and carpet.
I have a brush that attach's to my PC for carpet scrubbing..
I used up all my Lexol and have some Dura gloss for protecting leather.. I am planning on trying something new next go around.
Meguiars can be purchased at most local auto parts stores and the professional line is usually available at more paint oriented stores.(Napa, Carquest)
The rest of my stuff was purchased on line through numerous suppliers.
And your final ? sure if you want a 5 year old car with close to 200k on the ODO;)

Yes it seems that Cinti got the shaft on count, everyone that has purchased on the detail forum have been 16 also:mad:
Those guys have been buying 10 & 20 packs at a time.
For less than .40 per towel you cannot go wrong.

Agreed.
I realize that they are not the quality of those I have reserved for the car but they will serve well for general cleaning/polishing.

First off, I am envious of your collection. Second, a question about removing black marks from shoes off the plastic trim on the doorsill and lower kickpanels on the doors. You mentioned Megs 40. I've never tried that. How careful do you have to be when using it? Is it good at removing the marks without discoloring the plastic or leaving an obnoxious odor behind? My interior is beige/tan and was going to try some WD-40, Fantastic or if those failed a little, stress "little," lighter fluid.
Maybe I can offer a pointer? For removing road tar from paint, I've found WD-40 to be the best. Just spray it on and after 5-10 minutes the tar just wipes right off. No scratching, not even on chrome. The WD-40 will not mark the paint. Afterwards, I usually wash the area, dry it and apply a coat of wax (Mother's Carnuba without cleaners).

mrjtree:
Black mark removal can be accomplished with 40 if it is mild.
Goo gone works also, but I have heard people rave about the
magic eraser......
http://www.homemadesimple.com/mrclean/products/duo.shtml
It all depends on the extent of the marking.
That's why I have so many products! Sometimes you may need to use 3 Different products to clean a specific item.
As far as cleaning with petroleum based products I will use the woolite solution after to remove any residue from the cleaner, then apply a protectant.
WD-40 is good for removing tar as is Mineral spirits(both in my arsenal of cross over products).
If I just have small specs of tar I use a clay bar to remove, to try and remove as little of my paint protection as possible.
When using multi step sealing products you want to eliminate premature removal;)

The Mr. Clean eraser is indeed amazing. From scuffs on the kick panel to fiberglass bathtubs. It has even removed coffee stains from the kitchen counter that nothing else would touch! With no chemicals or cleaners to boot.

My sense of smell must not be too good, but people say I like the smell of that leather. How long have you had this car? They are surprised when I tell them 3 years. Of course we don't eat in the car, & I keep it very clean in general. I use the cleaner every 1-2 months. Definitely every month in the summer months. Not sure how much you can contribute to the cleaner so take it for what it's worth.
The leather itself is still in good condition. It doesn't have any cracks yet and still feels pretty supple. It is outside in the Alabama weather 24/7 b/c we don't have a garage at home nor work. It gets fairly hot here in the summer with lots of sun.
I don't have anything to compare the One Grand stuff to though. I've never had a car with leather before.

I belong to a detail forum/club. They advise NOT to use cheap costco microfiber towels as all you doing it scratching your clear coat. Go to autopia.com and read up !
Where is your ZAINO too ?
Inspector1
11-01-2005, 03:17 PM
Costco micros are used under hood, interior, and all other non cleared surfaces.
The Mrs. loves them for cleaning and dusting in the house, but not on glass!!
As far as reading up at Autopia, very informative site but has turned into a very Ego oriented forum anymore :thumbsdow Still plenty of info to be had if you read between the lines;).
I frequent Detailcity more often know. More like it is here on DA!!
And for Zaino, I will from my personnel experience say that it is a good product as well as many others on the market. Is it the best :dunno: That depends on the color used on and personnel taste.

Alot of it comes down to "good ole common sense"........
All my vehicles are black so Zaino works well for me. I agree with the ego thing, I just apply good ole common sense......btw, my garage shelf looks very similar to your wax collection. I think it is time to throw most of it away. Glad to know I'm not the only obessive one on this planet when it comes to wax and cleaning stuff......

This is an interesting thread to me, because the last three respondents (MotorCity Honda, RTexasF and Inspector1) are the three people I believe have shown the most knowledge with respect to detailing on this forum.
So; is the Poor Boys Waterless Wash & QD still a favorite item?
It seems odd to me that you guys, who worry about the specific quality of the MF towels you use to wipe/dry the cars, would ever wipe down a car without having rinsed/washed it first; wouldn't that be likely to scratch the paint?
Thanks.

Spray & Wipe is a great product if you use it properly!!(As with any).
The amount of dirt on the surface when using to clean should at worst be a film, then I use upward of 12-15 towels using 8 surfaces on each towel. When the towel is dirty(basically one pass), I flip to a clean side and so on.
Sometimes panels may require 2 passes.
I use more in the winter months after a High pressure spray off at the car wash that is less than 1/2 mile from home:thumbsup:
So basically in a nutshell S&W is my in between wash touch up during the summer and Hi-pressure wash follower in the winter.

Inspector Uno is the person that turned me on to Poorboy's Spray & Wipe some years back. It is an absolute staple in my detailing supplies and also keep some in the house for various duties. I have about a 1/2 gallon remaining and the next round will be the 5 gallon container.
Tip: A mix of 70% Spray & Wipe and 30% Spray & Gloss makes for good cleaning and a kick ass shine! Credit to Steve of Poorboy's fame.
