View Full Version : Idle speed when car is hot (too high) (Gen6c v6)
natesriv 07-22-2008, 02:09 PM Hello,
I did a search, but don't see similar results.
My wife's 2002 V6 Automatic Accord coupe has a high idle when it gets really hot outside. She's told me on the way home from work, it idles around 2000 RPM..
I'm not sure what to look for. There are no trouble codes as far as I can tell.
Can anyone point me in a direction to look? I don't see any sign of a vacuum lean (it doesn't do it in cooler weather)
We're in MO which runs 10% ethanol gas too...
Thanks guys!!
Nate

natesriv 07-22-2008, 05:22 PM drive, like in stop and go traffic.... she also says it did it in park... releasing brake and car would take off faster than normal....
Accordlover 07-22-2008, 06:36 PM Sounds like the throttle is sticking... you might want to get this professionally diagnosed.
By a dealer or good independent shop preferably.

Could be^
Did she say if the RPM surged or held steady around 2000? Someone with diagnostic equip should be able to tell if the throttle body isn't fully shutting or if a sensor is being erroneous.
natesriv 07-24-2008, 04:54 AM I'm not sure if it's the throttle sticking..... I guess one way to tell would be next time it does it... pull the gas pedal towards you to see if that helps....
I'm just wondering if it's a fuel issue....
I'll check next time she says it does it.
DonutLimo 07-24-2008, 06:09 AM Unless the pedal itself is sticking, pulling on it will only create slack in the cable if the throttle plate isn't shutting all the way. Usually sticking throttles are a problem with a cold engine and get better as the junk in there loosens when the engine heats up. Something is letting in too much air- if you have it in N or P and the engine surges between 1-2k that's almost a dead giveaway that there is a vac leak somewhere. If no surging, there might be a problem with the throttle body or a sensor or switch out of range and you'll want a computer to help find it. Strange that it happens when its hot outside, keep us posted I'm curious.
princess 07-24-2008, 08:12 AM Try cleaning the throttle body.
natesriv 07-29-2008, 07:47 AM good idea. Might be a weekend project
Accordlover 07-29-2008, 08:04 AM If it's still doing this know that there's more wear on the transmission and brakes right now. Those cars already have poor transmissions, I wouldn't let it go on much longer.
Also, high idle uses more gas.
natesriv 08-04-2008, 04:30 AM where is the IAC valve on this thing, and how to clean it? There was a story in our local paper, someone had a different car with same problem....
I'm just wondering, might be something to check...
Thanks!

It's in the realm of possibilities with this part's track record. Next time it idles up, shut it off and take the snorkel off. start it and put your thumb over the rectangular intake hole in the throttle body in front of the throttle plate. If the engine drops down and almost dies then you're on the right track. Most people who try cleaning it wind up replacing since it doesnt like to be fussed with. And definitely keep carb cleaner away from it, so I'm told.
natesriv 08-07-2008, 06:34 AM Thanks....it's below the throttle plate then.....
It hasn't done it in awhile, and I think a throttle body cleaning might be in order
DonutLimo 08-07-2008, 04:53 PM I agree, thats the cheapest way to start troubleshooting and DONT get solvents in the IAC port. Tape it or whatever- junk flowing in there is sudden death for that valve. For a quick clean, i just spray a rag with carb cleaner and wipe what i can reach from the intake side. The best way though is to remove it, clean it from both ends and pop it on with a new gasket. Hopefully it's as simple as that but this random high idle when hot is a new one for me.. You did check the throttle and cruise cables to make sure they're not hanging up right? And checked the throttle plate by itself for freedom?
