I just purchased an '06 EX V6 Sedan w/ 6-speed and I absolutely love the car. One issue I have with my particular Accord is that the previous owner obviously wore a ring and terribly scratched the metal cap on top of the stock shift knob. I really like the stock knob and don't want to change it so is there any way to polish out those scratches? I've run numerous searches but have been unable to find any information or if anyone has done this.

Thanks,

Wes

I had this same problem with my TSX and it was due to my own negligence. As you mention, wearing a ring on your right hand will definitely scratch the cap.

That said, you might try a "dremel" type tool and with some polishing compound or similar and using a soft polishing attachment gently buff the scratched surface.

If the scratches are too deep and you are unable to polish it out, you might try looking on eBay as I did. The shift knobs from the TSX is identical with the exception of red numbering and lines versus black for the Accord.

Good luck.

I've got a Dremel w/ polishing tip so maybe I'll try a little polishing compound on it. I don't honestly think it will work as the marks seem kind of deep (I think the owner may have had the habit of tapping the shift knob to the beat of music from the radio or something). If that doesn't work I suppose I'll just have to get one from someone online. It seems like there would be more used ones than there are since many people like to change out shift knobs.

Thanks,

Wes

You should check this thread http://driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=9606&highlight=shift+knob if you are thinking of changing to another kind.

I like it MUCH better than the hunk of metal the OEM one is.

While I was on my quest to find another unscratched stock shift knob for a decent price, I discovered that several model years of the S2000 had the same shift knob that the Accord did. It seems that far more S2000 drivers modify their cars (i.e. changing out shift knobs) so I was able to track down a like new shift knob in about a day. A guy responded to my WTB add on an S2000 forum and sent me this beauty for $30 including shipping:

I figured my time to try and polish the old knob was probably worth more than $30 (not to mention it probably wouldn't work) and this thing actually retails for about $137 from Honda!

You did good. $30 delivered seems more than fair. I really like my TL knob, but I have to admit the stock knob looks really good! If I'd have seen your thread sooner I'd have offered you my old one for $20.
Ok, ok I'm just yanking your chain.:)

Great find... I paid $48 on eBay (plus S & H) for mine.

Hmmm, makes me want to buy an extra just in case

I've got a slightly scratched one that I'll sell for $15, haha :D

Seriously though, if you check around on s2ki.com one of those guys would probably sell one pretty cheap like they did for me.

For some reason I think that the knobs just scratch on their own by use and wear of it cause I never use rings and my knob is pretty scratched up

Is your knob scratched like this from just your skin?:

If it is, your skin must be like sand paper!

After comparing the knobs side by side, I realized that the S2000 knob does not have perforated leather like the original knob. Every other aspect of the knob is identical. I consider this a plus though because my sedan does not have perforated leather seats like the coupe does.
