Just bought my first Honda, an '08 Accord EX I4. Car has only 500 miles on it. On start-up, the car idles in park, with no accessories on, at around 1500 RPM (steady, no jumps). Is this normal for the '08? Has anyone else out there experienced this and had it checked out? In drive, with the brakes on, the idle rolls down to ~750 RPM.

Thanks!

Yeah my LX-P does that too. I think it's a sort of "quick warm-up" mode. Mine starts hovering around 1300-1400 on warmer days and near 1500-1600 during the winter.

does it idle high on warm starts too?

cold starts its perfectly normal. its to light off the catalytic converters faster for better emissions.

Haven't had a chance to check on warm starts. Running some errands tonight, so I should be able to check it. Thanks for the tip!

Uh, every single car does this. It runs rich and at high rpm at cold starts to warm up the engine quicker. I hope you don't flog the engine when it's still warming up...

its normal for a cold start, but if your engine is all warmed up and it still idles that high. PANIC! haha j/k but seriously.
normally cold starts (doesn't have to be cold outside) will idle around 1500 then slowly work its way down to about 900 give or take a few when its fully warmed up.

Checked a few warm starts while running around last night and noticed much lower idle RPM's. Around 1,000 RPM after 30 minutes or so. I guess I'm a little overprotective (this is my first Honda), so thanks for the advice.

Previously had an '05 3.5L V6 Chev Malibu & I don't recall it ever reving noticably higher in the cold, Buffalo winters. I've read some modern engines retard spark plug firing or fuel injection (diesels) instead of throttling RPM's on cold starts. Doubt this will be the only surprise coming from a Chevy, but most have been welcomed changes!
