View Full Version : VentureShield installed and smoked corners
Stephen83 08-05-2008, 07:20 PM I finally got around to get venturshield installed. I read in many places its better than 3M scotchgard. It took 2 guys 4 hours to do it. I watched them and it's tricky on certain spots but its kinda straight forward. For those who have not done it before, getting the ebay knockoffs is not a good idea. Trust me you'll just be wasting money. I also got the corners smoked. I dont like how the ambers are so bright when i have a dark colored car, doesnt look right to me. The smoke film is thinker than the clear film and its 30% As you can see, it may look dark but when light hits it(camera flash) it lights up pretty good. You can see the line if you look for it and at certain angles where the light hits it. its not bad at all, can't tell if its there most of the time, plus i have a dark car.
Goit it all done for $635 that includes the bumper, 30" on the hood, fender (partial, ends where hood line ends) and mirrors plus the smoke job. For me, well worth it than having rock chips and crap sandblasting my front end on the freeway. I commute everyday on the freeways in LA, going opposite directions during rush hour.
I got it done at Advance Auto Engineering in Alhambra, CA

One of the more affordable places. Talk to Scott, he's a cool guy.

This was on 3M's website.
Q. Can Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film be used on headlights, foglights or windshields?
A. No, the Department of Transportation does not allow any film of any kind to be put on headlights, foglights or windshields.

who can tell, really? They're concerned w/ diminished light output and ricers puting blue and yellow over their rice rockets that cause distractions/lower (perceived and/or actual) light output. These dont fade to yellow. Can you see any evidence of film in front of my light other than the smoked ambers? no i dont think so and that's where it counts to them per the reasons above. The ambers, have no real use for safety sake anyways, they're not turn signals nor are they used for seeing. If ppl cant see me my headlights from the side or better yet, my car, they shouldn't be driving!
Dont get me wrong, im all for obeying the law, as long as it's reasonable, and what i did is reasonable. and if i get pulled over for this, which i highly doubt, i'll just show them my badge and they'll just turn around and go smiling to their squad car
Stephen83 08-06-2008, 07:10 AM By the way, thanks for your concern, and reminding me of the laws i help enforce

Same here - VentureShield installed: 30" on the hood, bumper, fenders (like yours), headlights, fogs, door edges and door handle cups -- $550 cash deal. And yes, it took 2 guys about four hours!
socalkid 08-06-2008, 07:25 AM dont know what they told you about post installation care but Plexus was referred to me by more then one installer/fabricator...

i bought a case direct! :D
jebinc 08-06-2008, 07:29 AM i bought a case direct! :D
How much, how many cans? Link please :)
Stephen83 08-06-2008, 07:33 AM jebinc: you got a sweet deal man!
Plexus also, i didn't get it tho, i'll try to find a good price somewhere. They said no washing the car for 2 days and keep it clean, dont let bird poop sit or else the acid will discolor it and use plexus after washing the car when the surface of the film is clean or else whatever debri is still on it will get sealed in by plexus.

direct from Plexus

Stephen,
i was told the same thing but slightly different, maybe because 3M? i was told no washing for a week, and let sit in direct sunlight during the day for a good 3-4 days. mine was initially a little foggy, but after the week period became nearly invisible... and you're correct on using it only after washing the car, it's not a conventional plastic cleaner and i believe even has a little bit of wax in the formula... time to go to Costco and get a case of microfiber!

That's right. No washing for a few days. Also, leave car in direct sunlight so the alcohol between the paint and film evaporates (curing the adhesive). Plexus after the first wash! Enjoy!
Re "the deal" - I had to cars (my other is an MX-5) done ($550 ea.) and it was a cash deal.
Stephen83 08-06-2008, 08:15 AM socalkid: They had 3M but i chose venturshield, i took the pix the day after install. The day of the install it is all clear, they used a squeegy to rub out any liquid and air bubbles, and that i think should get rid of the haziness...dono if its just 3M tho. And yes they say its like a wax/polish. I called the shop, its $9 for 7oz and $13 for 13oz and no shipping! I think i can skip the tax too.

yea keepin it real, fo sho, fo sho LOL :lmao:
listen to remix 06-14-2009, 02:52 PM Sorry for grave digging but...
Can you post alot more photos of your car? I want to see how the smoked reflectors look from far away, up close and different angles. I hate the orange reflectors. I was either going to take out the orange crap or paint it. But those options would be irreversible, therefore I think I'm going to take your route! How much would you have spent if you only smoked the orange part?

I don't think that was the point - i think the point is that 3M doesn't recommend it to be used like that because it isn't legal. I must admit it does look good... but those of us on the forum who do not have a badge to show could get a ticket for it... ya know?!?!?

I think it's legal to remove the reflectors.
http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/broch/c-50.htm
During annual inspections, they don't check them. They only check the turn signals and the hazard signal. This lead me to believe that what Stephen did was legal. Can you point me to information that tells you otherwise? I really want to know because I want to clear or smoke my reflectors, but I don't want to do something illegal.
RTexasF 06-14-2009, 03:29 PM Of course we only have these pictures to go by but I would say you bought a good product and were fortunate enough to watch experts install it. It looks good.

Haha, that's awesome.
Just got pulled over today about having no plates yet and my tail lights are heavily modified (tinted as black as my CBP coupe sans the reverse light), so I was expecting a fix-it ticket even though my lights when applied are clearly visible 1000 ft away. Comes back to my car with my license and says "Have a good one, by the man man, very nice car." Best encounter with law enforcement I've ever had :)
Seriously, loving the lights, man. Just got two questions about this place though – they disassemble the light or just apply to the outside of the light itself and roughly how much did they charge for the job?
Kiribati 06-14-2009, 05:18 PM Thanks for this. I've been wanting to get clear bra, and that shop is right down the street (not literally) from Temple City.

It's ok man. Check out the other links on my sig to see more pics. I think just the smoked amber are like $40-50

My point about who can tell was toward putting the clear bra over the headlight to protect it, not specifically referring to the smoked ambers per se.
RTexasF:
Thanks, Those guys really did a good job.
