I am writing this with the adrenaline still coursing through my body.
Family and friends routinely ask me why I spend hard earned money to replace or add parts to my 04 Accord when the factory parts aren’t worn out and the added parts don’t necessarily add to the comfort of the ride.
Up to this point taking a few turns above the posted yellow caution speed sign was all I did to flex my Accord handling muscle.
Well this morning some more of those questions were answered. I saw a mangled metal shelving unit between the lanes of the 5-lane highway on my less than inspiring commute to work. As I passed the debris my thought was that someone would have that in the front of his or her car today. I glanced in my mirror and took peace in that everyone made it through. I returned my attention to my driving just in time to see a second piece of shelving kicked up into the path of my precious Accord and face.
My moderately modified Accord reacted better than any car I have ever had. At 65mph I was able to make an emergency maneuver that kept both car and body safe. The maneuver took me onto the burm and back into my lane in a split second. I cannot express the higher-end performance the car displayed when I took it to the edge of its capabilities, and mine. Could my car have reacted as needed in a factory stock configuration? Who knows.
So the next time somebody asks you why you think you need to spend the money to do these modifications just explain, that you do for protection of life, limb and some happiness. Or, just smile to yourself and say what I used to “because it’s fun”.
I think I might wash my Accord tonight!
