PDF files are very particular about what version they were created in versus what version you trying to read them with. Right clicking and saving to your computer is always a good first step. Then you can always download the latest version of the reader from Adobe.
i can open them no problem. only difference is before it used to open a new page and now it doesnt.

They always worked for me before, but now they don't - I think it has something to do with the new site software.

I can open all the factory and instructions.. I have version 7 reader can be loaded from HERE (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)
It also has photoshop 2.0 starter kit for folks without image software....
NOTE: Adobe version 7 is not designed for use with Win 98...only users of XP or 2000 should download the latest version.

I got the same problem. It just happens some of the PDF files or maybe it just occurs occasionaly regardless of which file you are downloading. It seems that the file is not completely downloaded before Acrobat opens it. One solution is
1. delete Internet Temp. files to clear the cache of the file you just downloaded
2. use save as.. to save the file to HD.

Maybe it's time for Wards to investigate what happened with the new software upgrade???? :dunno:

This recent one doesn't work at all. I tried directly opening, then I tried downloading and opening. Neither method worked from either computer... :dunno:

I take it you meant to say "the" and not "this", as there was nothing to reference. I did take a look at the two lastest posts and the links had a typo. The links have been fixed. Let me know if it was something else you were talking about.

I am able to open that file in Adobe Acrobat 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0
Not sure where the issue is. Kind of hard for me to troubleshoot something that works here.

I think the problem is not on the PDF file itself, but corrupted transmission - the Acrobat reader gets corrupted/incomplete PDF when it is opened in Internet Explorer. You may test it remotely. At least for me, when the problem occurs, I can use save as... after first clearing the Internet Temporary files cache. The Acrobat reader opened the downloaded PDF file without problem.

Ok. Just tested, as one example. When I open the PDF file in this link http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2010, the Acrobat reader (Acrobat Professional 7.0) tried to open the PDF before it is completed downloaded, and it says "There was an error processing a page. There was a problem reading this document (109)", downloaded status is 107.72KB of 265.99KB.
I think it is also related to the fast web view feature of the Acrobat reader. So one workaround is to disable it in the preference of Acrobat reader (the option is in Internet category) or to save the PDF to HD first. Ward, maybe you can figure out something on the server side.

So does viewing for some depend on HOW they do it? If we figure out exactly what works, then maybe a stickie should be added with a warning or the viewing requirements......
I'm getting lots of requests for emailing stuff they can't see!

Yes Princess most problems have more to do more with the user and not with the actual file. We live in a time when plug-n-play is the norm, so people expect things to just work. Often a little time reading instructions, editing your settings or going through the configuration are just not done. I see it all the time with our customers calling into support only to be told to look at page one of their user manual.

I found this as a possible work around. I have not yet tried it.
Error "...File does not begin with '%PDF-'" When Opening PDF File Sent Via E-Mail
Issue
When you try to open a PDF file that was sent or received via an e-mail application or America Online (AOL), Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader returns the error, "There was an error opening this document. File does not begin with '%PDF-'."
Detail
The PDF file has a .mme extension rather than a .pdf extension.
Solutions
Do one of the following:
Solution 1
If you received the PDF via e-mail, ask the sender to check with the Internet Service Provider (ISP) for recommendations on the best way to send PDF files. For example, the ISP may suggest a specific encoding format.
Solution 2
If you received the file via AOL, do one of the following:
Disclaimer: Adobe Systems does not support AOL software or files sent or received using AOL. If the following options do not solve the problem, refer to the AOL software documentation or contact AOL.
-- Upgrade to America Online 5.0 or later.
-- Ask the sender to resend the PDF file with MIME encoding enabled in the e-mail application. AOL's software will automatically decode the MIME file and place the decoded *.pdf file in the same folder containing the encoded version. If AOL is unable to decode a MIME-encoded file, it creates a file name with a .mme extension. AOL recommends that you download the *.mme file and decode it with WinCode (for Windows) or Decoder (for Mac OS); both WinCode and Decoder are available from Etreesoft's Web site at www.etresoft.com.
-- Decode the PDF file using WinCode for Windows:
1. Download WinCode, which is available free from the Etresoft Web site at www.etresoft.com/.
2. Start WinCode.
3. Choose File > Decode.
4. Select the PDF file with the .mim extension. WinCode will decode the file, give it a .pdf extension, and place it in the same folder in which the encoded version was stored.
-- Decode the file using Decoder for Mac OS:
1. Download Decoder, which is available free from the Etresoft Web site at www.etresoft.com/.
2. Double-click the self-extracting Decoder file to decompress it.
3. Drag the PDF file with the .mim extension onto the Decoder application file. Decoder will decode the file, give it a .pdf extensions, and place it in the same folder in which the encoded version was stored.
4. If the file does not appear with the red Acrobat PDF icon, choose File > Open in Acrobat or Adobe Reader, select Show All File Types, select the file, and click Open. Or, before trying to open the file in Acrobat or Adobe Reader, drag the *.pdf file onto the PDF File Type Utility, which is located on the Adobe Reader CD in the Utilities: Mac: PDF folder. You can also download the utility from Adobe's Web site at www.adobe.com/support/downloads/acrmac.htm.

Try opening your Adobe Acrobat and wait for the automatic update detector to work. It should tell you that version 7.0 is available, and you can download it now. If you don't already have 7.0, this may make the difference for you.
As soon as I upgraded to 7.0, I could read the files again.

I am using 7.02, and can open any other PDF file I have come across, except Princess'. Something is stripping the %PDF text from the header lines, becasue every other PDF on my computer I looked at in hex mode has them.
Fast web view did nothing for me here, nor did saving target, nor opening in new window. Suspicious... will keep working on it!
