I need advise on a 2000 Accord EX-V6

Alright. I posted a thread on a 2000 Integra a couple of weeks ago. I went and saw it and it was a huge disappointment so I'm looking elsewhere. Now, once again, I'm buying a car for myself for a little while (I'm keeping my '06) then eventually giving it to my little sister when she turns 16.

Anyways, I found a 2000 Taffeta White EX-V6 coupe with 115k miles. At a little less than $8000, I think it's a great deal. Now, our family has a '98 EX-V6 sedan with 80k miles without any problems, will it be the same for the '00 model? I'm choosing the '00 model is because it's the first year Honda offers side airbags, which I think it's very important in terms of safety. Is this the generation where the tranny in the V6 cuases trouble? I'm gonna go check it out in a couple of days so let me know what else to look out for and checking for tale tell signs of a tranny failure. Thanks guys!!!!!

Yes, this is the generation with the transmission problems. At 115K I wonder if the transmission has already been replaced, certainly something to check into. Then again we have one 02 Accord with 96K and an 00 Odyssey (same transmission) with 106K both still have their original transmissions.

Yes, that year will have transmission problems, especially with the 3.0 V6. Even IF the transmissions been replaced, it will most likely fail again down the road. Even in their rebuilt units, the transmissions still have a deficient design.

So maybe I should avoid getting this car then. Oh well...

Bill,

You should not count the car out if the price is right. My 02 did have tranny replaced, but @ 156K. I have had the 02 since 5/03 and that is the only issue I have had with the car. Knock another 1500.00 off the price and it would be a great deal.

I had an 01 EX V6 with over 120k miles and I had no problems with it. My plan was to keep it forever, but then I saw the 8th gen coupes.

Go Terps!

Don't walk away from it, Bill. Like Inspector1 mentioned, use it as a bargaining chip. Print out the recall or any other documentation you need and put it on the dealer's desk. The rest of that gen's setup has proven rock solid for me on my 99 (albeit a 4 cyl).

Awesome!! Thanks guys!! I'll find the documentations and have them printed up. It looks like a nice car in pictures but I have to see it in person to figure out whether it is really worth it. Anything else I should look for??

I've got a 99 and the trans went at 95k miles.

I think $8000 is too much. While mine is a 4cyl, I only paid $5600, it has leather and is in very good shape. One owner, too.

The 00 is recalled for 7yrs/100k. Hopefully it was already replaced.. :dunno:

Check KBB, the dealer price is, at least that high. I paid 10.5K (low KBB was ~10K at that time) for a 2001 4D 4 Cyc Ex, 95K miles, 1.5 Yrs ago (in Cali). And it got a new trany at 100K under warranty...

Let's see, you don't have that pesky timing belt thing...overall condition is really the only other thing. Like mentioned...rock solid.

????

V6's have timing belts...

Which reminds me. It probably is due for all the belts and the water pump + cam and crank seals. My dealer charges $725 to do that on a V6.

So if your tranny goes, and you have to do that. You're looking at near 3500-4000.

Yikes!!!

Woops...time for me to get to bed. Sorry about that...

Bill...ask on these and see if you have another potential bargaining chip on the price!

THanks for catching my back there A/L

Oh wow!! Thanks guys!! I totally forgot about the timing belt and water pump. I really need to ask this dealer for all the records, especially the tranny and the timing belt. Hopefully I'll have some time today to get check it out so I'll report back tonight!

Alright...just came back from a test drive. Used cars really disappoint me. The car drove fine. No oil leaks, all the joints are good. The dealer couldn't provide any service records and when I called Honda and asked about the transmission, they said they have no records of it being replaced.

About the car, it started without hesitation. But the idle was jumpy (jumps between 1200 and 1500rpm). He told me that when his guys detailed the engine, water got into the TPS and must've messed it up. He agreed to replace it if it does it again but this only happens when the engine is cold. Once it was warmed up, the jumpy idle went away.

The transmission dipstick showed the fluid still red mixed in with a little brown so I suspect the fluid is old. The oil, however, didn't smell burnt at all. It smells like what it should be. The tranny clunked when I put it in reverse. Not violently, but you can feel a pronounced clunk with it. The car was parked on an incline so I dismissed that. It shifted very smooth without any slippage and very quick.

The car only came with one key, no remotes. The sunroof kinda stuck at about 3/4 of the way, the sunglasses holder is broken so it's open all the time. These are the little things that are wrong with this car. Otherwise it's very good. He agreed to sell the car at $6800 plus TTL. I still don't think it's a good deal despite the fact it's a 2000. So...I think I'm gonna pass on this car and keep looking.

Here's a pic of it:

Disappointing, it really is a good car. It's fits me better than my dad's '98 Accord sedan. Oh well...there're many more cars out there...

That's a shame...be interesting to see if the dealer pursues you more. But good on you for finding something you're more comfortable with. The missing keys, broken sunglass holder, and what looks like a less than perfect fit on the rear bumper cover hint at some potential abuse/neglect.

Keep the search going...it will come to you.

Meh, I would pass on any 6th gen Accord or Acura TL of those years. The transmission not being replaced would scare me even more. It's a bad design, something fluid changes aren't going to change.

You could also look for a Toyota Solara. Very reliable cars and no transmission issues. I have a freind who has 178K on a 2000 black 5-Speed SLE V6. It's still a boat in turns, but it's a nice car.

The sunroof kinda stuck at about 3/4 of the way

You mean it only opened 3/4 of the way? That is all the farther the sunroof on the coupe opens.

Another thing...

Why a V6? They're so unbalanced in that gen, have shitty transmissions and the performance is meagerly better if you ask me. The 4cyl is much more fun, especially if you get a 5MT. What I hate most is how heavy the nose is, and when you slam on the brakes the nose dive is horrendous on the V6. 4cyl's feel lighter on their feet IMO.

I like the smoothness of the V6. Anyways, I'm totally over it now. I bought a car. I'll be picking it up hopefully Monday. Here it is:

Yup! 2000 Acura Integra GS sedan with 115k miles. It was a theft recovery and they fixed it up. I bought this from a dealer that specializes in Hondas and he fixes up Hondas so he knows every single details with the car. The engine is smooth and responsive. The brakes are very good and it goes straight as an arrow on the highway. Interior is perfect and the leather has very little wear. I can't wait to take more pics when I pick it up next week.:banana:

Better get some full coverage and a kick ass alarm on that ****er.

Lojack anyone?

BTW - brake fluid looks dirty. Might want to change that.

Why does it look like that teg is an autotragic? :(

Thanks guys! I will get an alarm installed eventually. The car, however has stock immobilizer and security system. I'll take more pics when I pick it up next week.

Well, I picked the car up today. It feels well...small. lol. I'm loving it!! I don't care if it has a salvage title. From the looks of it, the previous owner has maintained it very well. All belts are new, including the timing belt (I took the cover off and looked at it). Brakes have more than 80% of the pads left on all 4 discs. The tires are brand new. The engine is just as smooth as my Accord, which I found very surprising. Since the car didn't come with any books, I have yet figured out how the Acura accessory security alarm works. I'll figure that out...eventually. I haven't snapped any pics yet but I'll jump right to it tomorrow when I have time after work. :D
