: Best gas for 8th gen accord v6
dyang622 09-16-2008, 11:23 AM Hey everyone, this is my first post! I just bought a new 08 accord v6 sedan and I want to know what type of gas I should fill up with. If you guys can give me any suggestions on brand, octane, and MPG I would really appreciate it.
most people get around 27/28 mpg (post breakin) with an auto v6, there is no gain going higher than unleaded, for brand it depends on your area since different places put additives in the gas.
AznX TL 09-16-2008, 11:38 AM actually they dyno'd the j35 from regular to premium fuel and found a 10hp gain....

Who is "they" and where can I find the dyno results?
AznX TL 09-16-2008, 12:34 PM hmm i forgot where i saw it, im pretty sure the article is somewhere on the forum. im gonna have to do some digging to find it.

I would like to read that article.
HereforInfo 09-16-2008, 12:48 PM I have the V6 with the 6 speed and I average somewhere between 18.1 and 24 and that is city driving with 20-30% hwy (some traffic)... Quite a range but it varies greatly with my driving. I don't have the VCM or whatever you call it.
dbassett74 09-16-2008, 01:22 PM I haven't noticed any perceptible difference in performance in this car with low or high octane fuel. I think it is such low compression, it doesn't need high octane fuel. I really wish they would've bumped up the compression, even if it meant requiring high octane fuel. This motor is probably closer to 290 or even 300hp with higher compression. As to what brand, well, I alternate between Chevron, Mobil and 76 and have never been able to tell a difference.

This is exactly why I question the benefit of VCM. I get consistently worse mileage than you and I have VCM. You'd think VCM would provide a greater benefit in mpg, but considering that it only kicks in when there is almost zero load on the engine, it probably make little to know difference.
Read the manual. Use 87. I usually use Shell, but I'll stop by the WaWa right by my house if I'm on E.
wbb1211 09-16-2008, 02:25 PM I have the 6 speed M/T and it don't seem to care what fuel I put in it. I would think in the city or stop and go traffic that the 6 speed might have the advantage but on the on a long road trip on open road the auto with VCM should do better.
lei1634 09-17-2008, 06:00 AM i do pretty well with vcm on mine...i dont drive it too hard as im used to much faster cars..i averge around 25city in the v6
GuidoCoupeV6 09-17-2008, 11:22 AM I read somewhere (I believe it was in the manual) could be wrong though that while yes our cars can run fine on regular unleaded (87) it says something about that if you do use regular if you drive below 2k rpm on the manual you can get a slight engine shake .... :dunno:
I use 89 don't really have an answer as to why i just figure its between the lowest and highest octane so it couldn't hurt and its not considered lowest grade fuel ... :)
I am pretty sure this is the same throughout gen7 & 8 ...

In Canada, I use Shell. I'd use Chevron, but its not available where I live.
Chevron apparently is the best of the best out there so if there are Chevron stations out where you live, I would suggest you use that. Honda Canada thinks highly of Chevron.

Denby 09-17-2008, 12:14 PM Bought my v6 may this year and started out with 87 octane, but just recently i decided to try higher octane 93, i immediately felt the difference (more power).
i think you'll get better performance from the v6 using higher octane gas 90 +
Arash 10-03-2008, 03:27 AM the place that I'm at only has 95 and 98.... would it make a difference since they are +90?

just use whats recommended in your owner's manual. thats what im trying. only filled up once so far.

I second that. I notice a difference with 93. More punch.

Yea a punch to your wallet :(
jadkar 12-28-2008, 05:48 PM This may actually be a more serious question than a few of you think and I stumbled upon this thread because I'm searching for an answer as well.
Let me explain. I have a 2002 Honda Odyssey that cleary states in the manual that the van has 240hp on premium and "slightly less power" when using regular unleaded. They don't tell you much about the difference but they are admitting that the ECU does alter the timing thus reducing power. Most modern engines do this. We also own a 2008 Infiniti G35x, the car has 306hp rated on 93 octane. During this past summer when fuel was $4567.00/gallon (felt like that much) we switched to regular and the car drove fine but was noticably slower. Again although in this case it is not advertised, the ECU clearly retarded timing and let the engine run correctly but with just less power.
With all that said, I'm sure Honda "rated & advertised" the Accord V6 as running on regular making 271hp for a reason. They didn't want to even mention premium fuel because the car is not geared toward that segment (and fuel prices ****ed when they were marketing). So I'm wondering if the opposite applies, if the ECU will advance the timing and make the engine more powerful on higher octane fuel. The ECU can easily move the timing up a little at a time until it senses a knock and then hold it there. There may definitely be some truth to this. I would even think this is more feasible on the 6spd since we don't have the goofy VCM mode tinkering with things.
Earlier someone mentioned there was an article floating around about this. I couldn't find it but I'm wondering if it's worth getting some dyno time in to check this out. I just bought my 2009 V6 6spd coupe 2 days ago and wanted to get some baseline numbers anyway.
bukxanger 01-20-2009, 04:33 PM so would it hurt to put in 91 fuel all the time? not for performance wise or anything. Just wondering if it'll harm the engine in anyway.

It absolutely will not hurt the engine. It may or may not be a waste of money though.

Nope, just your pocket :D. Save that money for something else. Take care.
MJCfromCT 01-20-2009, 05:47 PM I only run Shell (only top tier gas provider in my area), 87 octane.

I can get quite high mileage if I drive highway (Trip A - nearly 100% highway, Trip B - ~3500 mile average).
o8_v6 01-21-2009, 05:52 AM i use midgrade, even made the dealer make it midgrade when i bought the car so i couldnt really tell ya wat reg and prem feels like...
kopimon 01-21-2009, 07:01 AM I only use Shell since I have their rewards card.
Read the manual. Use 87. I usually use Shell, but I'll stop by the WaWa right by my house if I'm on E.
WaWa is nothing short of awesome, lucky you live near one.
mhadden 01-21-2009, 12:48 PM Ha, I thought "WaWa" was slang or baby term for Walmart! Then I searched...:paranoid:
:D
next_milenium 01-21-2009, 12:53 PM Lately I've been using Samsclub regular and my car runs fine. I do use Chevron mid grade once in a while.
feras04 01-21-2009, 03:13 PM My friend has a 2.2 liter 4 cylinder 2009 Mitsubishi Galante.
Me and him were on Toronto and were about to drive to Detroit.
We both followed each other the entire way, and kept our cars on cruise control 80mph almost the entire trip.
We filled up our cars 100 percent from Toronto, and took off to Detroit.
When we arrived to Detroit, we both went to the same gas station to fill up gas...
I filled up 10 gallions, he filled up 11. He paid more to fill up his gas...
I have a v6 Accord (2008) , he has a 4 cylinder 2009 Galante...
Whats up now? HAHA, our V6 Accords not only do better on gas than 4 cylinder cars, but we have the power!
He was so shocked...im like, told ya to get a v6. Im never going back to 4 cylinder cars
