View Full Version : Accord key unlocks other Hondas?
foulmouthedleon 09-19-2008, 01:13 PM Totally out of curiousity here, but when I leased my Accord, I had asked the dealer if my key would actually unlock another Honda. He said that it would unlock (or lock) about 1/100. I tried off and on (mainly when walking into a mall or store or something, just out of fun) and never had it work.
Has anyone ever pushed their lock/unlock button and had it actually lock/unlock another Honda?
Accordlover 09-19-2008, 01:19 PM These newer ones have more sophisticated rolling code type systems. I'll bet your dealer said that with hopes that you'd buy their 'upgraded' security system...
It will never happen, I'll bet.
catbert430 09-19-2008, 01:22 PM Don't wear out the battery in your remote trying.

My dealer didn't know my accord had a telescopic steering wheel.

You are lucky you weren't seen and arrested for attempted grand theft auto. Good luck explaining the cops that you just wanted to see for fun if your key opened another car. :headbash: If I saw somebody doing that to my car, you bet the police'd be notified and charges pressed.

ya or not. first he would have to steal the car. he cant help it if his remote opens someone else's car, nor did he have the intent to steal a car. without intent there is no crime.
Coolcrush 09-19-2008, 01:42 PM On my old Jetta my friends factory remote would open my car but mine owuld no topen his, strange.

The OP said key, not remote. If he used the actual key, he wouldn't have to sucessfully steal the car, that's why a crime is called "attempted." If somebody is fumbling with a key and it's not his car, the perception of itent of stealing is certainly there -- wouldn't you think that if you saw somebody doing that to your car????
If he used the remote, of course, that's a different story as nobody would notice it.

I think you misread, I wasn't (and never will) actually inserting my key into someone else's car, just pressing the lock/unlock button to see if anything would happen. Even if it did work, I'd never act on it.
I was just curious if it was possible...

Kinda on the same topic...I got 2 buddies that live in seperate homes in where their garage door openers can open each others garage door. And no they didn't program it that way..
Now thats some scary stuff.
foulmouthedleon 09-19-2008, 01:52 PM And by "key" I meant remote, since they're the same thing or at least attached.

With a modern remote, the code changes every time you use it and there are millions, if not billions, of combinations. No way that you can open 1/100 of all Honda's out there. The salesperson just pulled a number out of his a**, as they usually like to do when they don't know the answer.

i see the confusion. he did say key. i guess i knew what he was thinking cuz our key is our remote lol. definitely see what u mean now. then again, they would still have to prove his intent to steal the car. i think at best they could get him with breaking and entering (as a car is considered a place of dwelling by law).

Of course, this is all hypotethical, as the OP used his remote. And yes, I agree with your, they would probably just keep him in lock-up overnight and release him in the morning to teach a lesson -- it would still be pretty stupid to try that.

In order to be "attempting" he has to have intent... he already stated that he wanted to see if he could unlock/lock other cars, not steal them.
And if you read his post completely, you'd see he was talking about the remote on the key, not simply putting the key into random door locks.
foamypirate 09-19-2008, 03:15 PM I have a 4th gen Accord, I can unlock and start my neighbors 4th gen like my key was meant for it. I can unlock my friend 92' LX, but can't start it, and I can also unlock my other friends 91' EX, but it takes a bit.
