View Full Version : Do all 4 tires have to be the same? (08 coupe)
kopimon 09-26-2008, 07:19 AM I popped a tire last night on a nasty pothole. I wouldn't even have noticed until I was riding on the rim if the TPMS hadn't done a great job of letting me know something was wrong
My honda dealer wants $280 for a new MXV4 tire + $22 for mounting and balancing.
I know it's recommended that I replace it with the same tire but are there any negative consequences to putting on a different tire?
I was thinking of going to goodyear and trying to find a similar used tire with about the same amount of wear. But if there are any safety issues, I'll just bite the bullet and replace it with an OEM tire.
What do you guys think?
justeddie 09-26-2008, 07:26 AM you should look online to find the same tire but for a whole lot cheaper...
stevencrosbie 09-26-2008, 07:34 AM Ideally, the same tire all of the way around is the best. Second best is place an axle's set of tires (two at a time).
You should never put only 1 tire on a car if it is going to be a different make.
Marc08EX 09-26-2008, 07:36 AM I agree with everyone. Put the same tire. Check tirerack because they have good prices.
catbert430 09-26-2008, 07:38 AM Yikes! I just checked Costco.com and the OEM tire is $284.99 including mounting and balancing.
You might as well go to the dealer.
kopimon 09-26-2008, 07:41 AM Thanks guys .. tirerack has the best online price I found and they want $250 + ~20 for shipping so I think I'll just get it at the dealer.
Side note, this is pretty expensive for a tire that a lot of people believe is inferior and noisy
AznX TL 09-26-2008, 07:44 AM if i were you, i'd change 2 tires, the one that popped and the one directly on the other side of it.
i hate these tires with a passion. just keep the 1 tire as a spare just incase one of the other two pop, then you dont have to buy a new one.

That sounds like an excellent idea .. Would a tire and rim fit in the spare area in my trunk?
AznX TL 09-26-2008, 07:47 AM i really doubt a full size spare is gonna fit but you never know until you try.
kopimon 09-26-2008, 07:53 AM I guess I'll try it with the popped tire sitting in my trunk .. too bad we're doomed with rain for the next two days :(
kopimon 09-26-2008, 08:06 AM hey .. would this be a good buy? http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Pilot+HX+MXM4&partnum=345WR8MXM4HX&vehicleSearch=true&fromCompare1=yes&place=12&speed_rating=H&speed_rating=V&speed_rating=Z&speed_rating=W&speed_rating=Y&speed_rating=(Y)&minSpeedRating=H
What's the difference between 235/45R18 and 235/45ZR18 ?
AznX TL 09-26-2008, 08:16 AM Z rated tires were design to handle 148mph, ZR is rated to handle 149+.

lol .. it's noted that you dislike the tires but I'll stick with them until it's time to replace all 4 and then I'll pick up some nice performance tires .
Is that $170 tire acceptable or should I shell out $280 for the :paranoid:OEM:paranoid: tire?
AznX TL 09-26-2008, 08:41 AM they're different tread patterns

kopimon 09-26-2008, 10:20 AM oh, our tires are MXV4?
AznX TL 09-26-2008, 10:33 AM :dunno: thats what you had in your first post.
kopimon 09-26-2008, 10:45 AM OK, I was confused a little so I called up Honda and they said the stock tires are HX MXM4 .. so the $170 tire should be OK on the car?
AznX TL 09-26-2008, 10:46 AM yeah if its the same tire.
Darth Do'Urden 09-26-2008, 01:23 PM The "same" tire is the one that's $280 or so. I just had to buy one myself (nail in the sidewall). I bit the bullet for the same OEM tire.
reframmellator 09-26-2008, 01:46 PM I had a manager - a chemical engineer - who had a limited budget and a Karmann Ghia. He put two radials on the left side and two bias plies on the right side. His rationale was that each side would handle similarly and therefore not have any deadly handling characteristics in terms of front- or rear-end breakaway. Admittedly, how close to the limit could one get in a Karmann Ghia, but the car never met a premature end for failing to negotiate a curve.
And I DO NOT RECOMMEND trying this one at home, kids.
kopimon 09-26-2008, 08:56 PM Thanks for the replies everyone ... Since I don't want to be without my car for 4 days, I'll just get the tire from Honda tomorrow
