Okay, I am really confused regarding the use of synthetic oils and in particular Mobil-1.
Now, can someone please tell me would it be unreasonable to 5000 between oil changes using Mobil-1 and a Mobil-1 oil filter. The car has 124,000 miles on it.
The auto store has a special of five quarts of Mobil-1 & a Mobil-1 oil filter for $28.99. Consequently, I am trying to do a cost analysis here to see if it is worth it.

Thanks,
Kevin

I would go much further than 5000 miles. You could do that with a conventional motor oil. 8-10k min for the costs sake.

Does your Accord drink oil yet? Or is it a V6?

It is a V6 and I have not noticed it using or leaking any oil.

Oh good. The 2.3L 4's like their oil. :lmao: Oilaholics when they get up there in miles.

I say go for it, but only if you're going to go longer than 5k. It's a waste if not.

Although I am pro synthetic I honestly don't see any advantage in you switching over especially if you plan on 5K intervals. For half the money you could go with Motorcraft which is a superb synth blend and it will easily last 5K and then some. Any name brand standard oil will go 5K for that matter.

Stick with regular oil and run Auto RX twice in a row for an overall improvement. The product has been proven to work by hundreds of people on Bobistheoilguy.

Which autostore has the special? I went looking yesterday but couldn't find it. I think it is a good deal at $28. I'm at about 7K on my last change and the oil still looks good. I might run another 100o or so on it.

Up here in Wisconsin, Advance Auto Parts and Auto Zone have the specials.

At that price, it is definitely worth it. To make it truly worthwhile, you would have to go between a minimum of 5000 miles between oil changes, otherwise stick to regular oil.

In reading my owner's manual it stated that for normal service it recommends changing the oil every 7,500 miles or every six months for regular automotive oil.
Consequently, I am going use Mobile-1 oil and a Mobile-1 filter and plan on going the full 7,500 miles while keeping a close eye on the oil quality.
Thanks for all the responses thus far.

I have a 1999 AV6 with 158k+ miles now. I used to change the oil every 5k with Mobil 1 pure synthetic motor oil. Now, I tend to change it between 6k-7k because it seems wasteful and I drive mostly freeways. But I'd max it out at 7500mi. In that neighborhood, the oil is really black. After changing the oil, you really notice a difference in the engine's smoothness. Also, I don't think you can go long before you change your oil like the newer cars because your car was built like 10 years ago.

The only way you can keep "a close eye" on the oil quality is by having it analyzed.......color means nothing. Look at fresh new diesel oil after 30 minutes running time in a diesel truck. Honda has always been optimistic when talking oil changes, my manual says 10,000 miles on regular oil and change oil filter every 20,000 miles!!!! Only a fool would follow that schedule with standard oil.

If you want to do it right here's how:

Run the Mobil 1 for 5000 miles the first time and drain it. Refill with the same and the next 5K interval have it analyzed only draining a small sample. Blackstone labs is one of many that do so. That analysis will alert you to any problems and tell you how the oil and engine is doing at that point. The information provided will let you know if 7500 miles (or more) is a safe move or if you need to change oil right then & now. It's only about $20. Sure beats guesswork or the million opinions (most of them dead wrong) found on the internet.

Good advice.

I drive mostly highway miles and use M1 5W-20. I usually go about 10,000 miles between oil changes and the oil analysis' have been very good.

Take the guesswork out of your oil change intervals by doing a few oil analysis' to dial in the best interval for your driving conditions.

Alright, I'll pipe in with my 184k mile 4 Banger:

I use Valvoline and change it at 5k intervals. The motor drinks a bit of it now and then...about 1/2 a quart if I let it go longer to 6k miles but that seldom occurs.

It runs flawlessly...frankly I expect to be looking at a third transmission long before any motor failures (knock on wood just in case). I've never had a Honda 4 cylinder motor fail in any way under 200k miles (I usually let them go as it nears that mark because the rest of the car usually has other mounting wear and tear.)

Thats really good as far as useage goes..or lack there of esp on the F23 with highway driving. Is that 5w30 your using? You may want to kiss the top of your engine next time the hood is open to keep up the good luck! :D

Maybe my wife pushed it just hard enough to keep it tight when she was using it for her daily driver. With me, it has entered a more relaxed retirement phase of driving style...who knows. But I'll take the results. So far it remains solid.

Yep...5w30 as recommended on that nice little oil cap under the hood. Actually, I need to replace the loosening oil drain bolt as it (the threads) has now started to wear out. I think that's a good sign of engine health!

This of course was brought to my attention a few weeks ago by my personal Master Honda Tech in Santa Fe, TX.
