so i was parallel parking the other day and got just a smidge too close to the curb. not only is my rim a little bit but there is a small chunk of rubber missing form my sidewall. is this drivable?

Honda can repair your rim for you, it happened twice on mine. In Canada, they charged me Cdn$150 for each rim, approx. $120 US? FOr your tire, if the inner layer is showing, then do not drive it for sure.

it is maybe 5mm give or take deep?
last thing i need is a blow out while driving.
im more worried about that than my rims.

I tore a chunk off the front wheel (sidewall) of my old car and drove it that way for over a year... no problems.

If it's by the mounting bead (close to the rim) I would say it's probably ok since the tire is thicker there.

Keep an eye on that portion of the tire's sidewall to see if it ever hardens (scratch it & the unaffected surrounding area w/ a thumbnail to observe change in density) and note color-changes (slight lightening of the black to a dark slate-gray/anthracite). That means the rubber is being stressed and is prone to a blow-out or bulging/bubbling (which renders the tire a risk/liability).

Also, keep an eye-out somewhat regularly on the said tire's air-pressure (as you should be doing so anyways to maintain proper fuel-economy & performance/handling, along w/ proper treadwear).

And no, I'm not being an idealist. I've used plugs on side-walls in the past, which are generally a no-no. I just become more attentive/vigilant, as I give a quick glance/feel to the affected tire every month or so. Spend a minute doing what I stated above vs. $150-$200 for a new tire, shipped & mounted/balanced... seems somewhat obvious to me as to what I'd prefer to do! :cool:
