Is there any real benefit or difference in using 16", 17" or standard 18" wheels for winter tires?

I know the narrowness of the tire is important to help cut through the snow and slush, but does the actual size of the wheel something to consider?

Thanks for your insights & answers....Please be gentle if a stupid question :wave:

In my opinion, smaller is better for 2 main reasons:
1- Wider selection of tires;
2- Less expensive for 16" than for 17" or 18".

Just make sure the smaller wheel clear the calipers. On my 05 V6 6-speed, I was told by the dealer that the basic 15" wheels would not clear the calipers, so I had to go with 16".

Of course when going with a smaller wheel, to keep the speedometer calibrated you'll end up with a taller side wall. The taller side wall will help reduce impact harshness with the inevitable road ruts and potholes you'll encounter during the winter.
