View Full Version : Has anyone done the underdrive pulley from Unorthodox?

The total for the set is under $500. I had a set of pulleys on my Acura CL and they seemed to add some decent low end. The power pulleys make is not huge but its no secret that they help the overall performance of the car by reducing the weight and diameter of the original pulleys thus freeing up more power for your car to spend @ the wheels rather than crazily spinning your alternator and water pump. I also heard often when I was tuning that honda/acura especially tend to come from the factory using more power than necessary on these types of things. I think it will be worthwhile and I believe also a gas saver. Maybe we could get a group buy going on for these? I couldn't get enough people for the intake manifold (bought it anyway) but maybe this will be a little more reasonable for people. Let me know shoot a PM or start a list here of those interested. We will probably need ten plus so tell your buddies lets get some good deals on some basic power parts! Use the power of the boards!!

my AC is weak enough without UDPs

maybe it needs to be recharged?

$500 for under drive pulleys? Geeze, when I had my Mustang a set ran about $100.

Don't even think about it in hot weather. And not worth the trouble or expense in ANY weather IMO:naughty:. Good day.

haha i got mine from asp for my mustang for 25 dollars used. and btw, to the person talking about thier a/c not working too well.. the pulleys dont go on the ac, just the crank, water pump and alternator.

$25 was a great deal, I bought mine new from Steeda.
I don't think you really gain enough hp to bother swapping pulleys.
If I were to drop $500 on my Accord, it would be something other than pulleys.

There wwas never a pully made for the water pump with any honda. Honda has always used the timing belt to drive their water pumps and still holds true with the V6 accord. The new K-series and R-series engines are chain and therefore the water pump is driven off the chain.

does the alternator power the A/C compressor, or is the compressor belt/pulley driven too? i'd assume pulling power from the alternator will still effect my crappy A/C

Let me know what results you get out of the intake manifold; keep us updated.

All I found was one pulley, not the set, anyone have links?

Has anyone installed these on their accord yet? Anyone find any dynos?

What about the Ported Intake Runners?

Just curious how much performance gain you'd get from these and how hard to install...

Just asking the questions no one else seems to be sharing... :dunno:

The alternator/electrical system powers the fan that distributes the flow of air to the passenger compartment, as well as the electric clutch that that cycles the compressor on and off. But it is the belt that drives the compressor, and it won't work without it, and it won't work as well if you slow it down.

And the only way to know for sure if you're actually getting more horsepower is to do a before and after chassis dyno evaluation, and that will cost you some coins.

You didn't ask, but another poster suggested that if you had $500 to spend on your ride, you probably could do better, and I agree.

I had them on my cl-s 6spd and prelude type sh. one thing to keep in mind that if you have amp etc it will drain your battery just sitting at idle to where you'd have to blip the throttle. It does add low end like most are saying but get a better battery while you are at it. Throttle respose is better too w/pulleys. I did not do crank pully as it doesnt retain the harmonic balancer which is said to reduce the life of engine.

I don't know what your goals are...if you're striving for more performance you probably should have chosen another platform. Making a Honda "fast" is probably a very expensive undertaking. Most of the members of the forum seem to be more interested in appearance improvements: wheel/tire combos, lowering kits, lighting improvements. While you can't reasonably expect to get much in a wheel/tire upgrade for $500, there are lots of other possibilities.

:thumbsdow So your idea for better for $500 is making my car look faster? Thanks anyway. I'll hold out for something better. Back to the search engines I go.

Bang on, I went through 2 alternators on my civic with a UD pulley and even after getting a battery and cat for stereo still had electrical issues as a result of the poor charging power from the alternator...those civics are week (electrically) so not sure if it would be any better on the accord, even my V6 with the bigger alternator and battery. I eventually replaced the UD pulley on the civic back to stock and problems went away...huh.

$500 Bucks for just UDP, you must be crazy... I wouldn't spend that much money for just that..

When i had UDP for my Scion Tc, it loss a lot of A/c Function and Loss in Headlight output.. So Be careful if you are going to buy it.
