I was driving up the turnpike last week, cruising comfortably in the left lane. There was car in front of me going considerably slower. It had PA plates, so I figured the driver just wasn't familiar with NJ's house rules (example, 65 really means 80). No biggie, there was plenty of space on the right to safely pass.

So I coaxed the engine into VTEC range with an aggressive downshift and effortlessly accelerated past the offending car. As I was passing by, I glanced over to see if my stereotypical guess that the driver was elderly or female was true.

I was horrified to see the driver (a middle-aged lady) reading a brochure. I tapped the horn a few times, gave her a look that said "are you for real?" and got as far away from that car as I could.

I drive the NJTP everyday. That's not so bad. I've seen people reading papers, talking on cellphones.. reaching into their backseat looking for stuff.

It's pretty sad. People can barely drive without doing anything else, then you add in talking on a cellphone or something.

Nothing more frustrating than getting stuck up in 2-3 miles of traffic, only to find out its caused by some MORON riding in the left lane and blocking all of the traffic.

Get out of the way, you idiot!

Here in CT, Red means "keep going". In the last 3 months alone, I've come close getting hit by people making left turns, or going thru, way after it turned red and opposing traffic have already moved.

Here in central PA, we always seem to get out-of-state drivers who feel the need to drive the exact speed limit in the passing lane, which ends up causing you to have to pass them in the right lane because they will not move from the passing lane! Most of the culprits are from Florida...

The other day, was on a three-lane highway where the speed limit is 55 (everyone does about 70). A car is in the left lane in front of me doing about 50 (of course another Pennsylvania driver). There are cars to my right, so I start to slow down when out of nowhere I have to slam on my brakes because this woman turned on her turn signal and mashed her brakes in an attempt to make a LEFT TURN across the three lanes of traffic on the other side to hop on to the turnpike. She only realized her mistake after a few cars had to skid around us and everyone started honking. She than slowly accelerated back up to her 50 mph.

Hmmm...brings up an interesting point: So are they wrong for going the limit in the left lane? Theoretically you would only need to pass if your were illegally speeding.

Believe me, I'd prefer they move over, though.

Hehe, that's ironic because PA drivers do that in NJ all the time :D

Where in Jersey are you from?

Considering that almost no one actually goes the "limit"...just like most other places :naughty:

Honestly...driving in Jersey scared me!

At the toll booths on the turnpike in Jersey, it always seemed like it was a freaking drag race out of those things! I thought that I drove fast/crazy at times, boy-oh-boy was I shocked!

Uunderstood. It's something that corssed my mind before that if I were to be ticketed for passing on the right, etc, I guess technically I wouldn't have a leg to stand on. I think it should be taught and enforced from a perspective of: Drive to the right, pass on the left...all with the notion of not impeding traffic flow.

That's how it's generally enforced but there's those exceptions.

And finally, seriously...How is it so many just don't know or care about left lane travel? And is it more "don't care" or "don't know"?

I've always wondered that myself ..

If the slow left-laner sees cars passing him from the right and moves out of the way, I assume he just didn't know. If, on the other hand, he just continues driving like an asshat in the left lane, he probably doesn't care.

BTW, I agree your asshat term is great. Much better in that not everyone has one, but many deserve one!
