Since I am new to Honda and although I have heard people mentioning k-series and j-series motors, what are the differences between the two. From what I have read is that the I4 Accords come with K-series engines and the V6 with J-series. Is the only difference that k-series comes with DOHC and i-VTEC and the j-series SOHC and no i-VTEC? The only other time I have heard people talking about the 2 is that they were swapping k-series engines for J-series. Another bit I read said that k-series engines are not as great factory tuned as the J's. Therefore aftermarket performance parts tend to give greater improvements on k-series engines.

J-series just refers to Honda's V6 engine family, similarily, the K-series is one of Honda's I4 engine families, along with the R-series, D-series, A-series, F-series, etc. There is also a C-series V6. The C, D, A, and F-series are no longer in production, other than the F22C in the S2000.

honda k series are i4's found in acura rsx, civic si, accords, 02+ crv's and elements
they all vary from economic engine (k20a3 found in ep3 civic si and rsx base) to race engines (k20z1 found in rsx-s and 05+ civic si) and was/is a highly sought after engine for engine swaps.

honda j-series is the v6, found in their whole line up except the integra and rsx. it puts out more power and tq, and was rated top 10 world's best engine 2 consecutive yrs in a row. its a factory beast, but aftermarket wise reg bolt ons will not see a huge gain as the k-series would. they make more power then the k-series because its a bigger engine.

Tho' I'd like to see what the K23T (RDX engine) could do in a Civic (Yikes!)

K23 wont fit in an old civic, it's too tall. Also none of K-series trannies will bolt up to it, it uses a modified RL tranny.

J series still has belt-driven cams, and only SOHC. They're still competitive in power, but at the bottom compared to most DOHC rivals of the same displacement. Good day.

Does Honda have any 6cyl. DOHC engines? What is the reason for only SOHC? Fuel economy? Something else?

The NSXs had a DOHC v6 engine that made 290hp. Too bad the engine is no longer made.

Cost and reliability from what I understand. SOHC have less problems....

I know the K series of 2006 has a real sensitive throttle due to the implementation of DBW for the K24 versus the J30A5 of the same year which is a lot easier to drive, IMO. Although I am sure you can get used to anything over time. Both engines are sweet but I started off life with an Accord with the last update of the J30, the venerable J30A5.
