View Full Version : Shifting...
danger 10-10-2008, 05:51 PM I have a automatic and i know if i wanted to shift while driving i should've gotten an manual.. but what exactly are the 1,2,D3 for exactly on my car.. and is it possible to start at 1 shift to 2 and D3 and eventually D like a manual? or will i damage my car like that :p
AgentWashington 10-10-2008, 06:10 PM Your low range gears are for towing or other special circumstances (such as keeping 1st gear while your driving at low speeds through snow). I don't like shifting like that will cause any damage, but I'm no expert.
danger 10-10-2008, 06:18 PM haha ohh.. im confused about this paragraph in the manual it says.. To shift from second to first, press the realease button on the front of the shift lever. this position locks the transmission in first gear. By upshifting and downshifting through 12,d3 and d you can operate this transmission much like a manual without a clutch pedal>
07AccordEx-L 10-10-2008, 07:20 PM wait it says u can do that in the manual?
i heard upshifting is ok but DOWNSHIFTING is what kills the tranny.

You are a prime candidate for a your first manual transmission vehicle soon. This is called MT fever and it will only subside when you go buy a MT vehicle or maybe you can rent one and practice on it's MT so you won't sacrifice your brand new car's MT.
danger 10-10-2008, 08:03 PM But i just got my 08 accord >_> hahaha
i believe its called gate shifting.. but googling gives this

well they do say that Honda's AT shift like a manual and I feel my AT shifts very similar to a MT but it's an AT. This is what happens when you get a Honda 'manumatic' ..you want a MT that much more when you get a Honda V6 AT...you begin to crave the VTEC rush and want even more control of it with a MT...naahh, but until then you will continue to whistle in the wins with your AT 'manumatic'.
07AccordEx-L 10-10-2008, 08:26 PM Honda needs to add tiptronic. The only reason i don't have a manual is bc i wasn't the one that picked out my car. My old man went to the lot and bought the car without having me in deciding.
stiller fan 10-10-2008, 08:33 PM you can shift it like a manual..... i did that with my 93, 90, and my mom's TL and 97 once than once... it's great to slow down quick if you need to on the highway (deer, traffic)....
fyi, if you are in snow, and you put the car into 2, the tranny will lock into 2nd gear, giving you more traction in snow / ice / sand....

brakes slow you down quicker. moreover, brakes are designed to slow you down.

I know.. when that vtec kicked it.. omg lol.. but anyways, how do you drive a AT 'manumatic.. cause i don't barely know how to drive a manual
Throwdown 10-10-2008, 09:21 PM Sorry...after the hours I've searched this site (and the few responses I've made) I'm amazed we really have to have a thread like this.
If you want a manual...buy a manual.
If you a want an auto...buy an auto.
And trust me...I deal with my manual through central NJ traffic, which is probably some of the worst around..
OH AND READ MY SIG - THANKS!

But you'd learn if you bought one. This is my first manual car (besides dirtbikes/sportbikes and if you had to do it...u'd figure it out or STALL)

I couldn't agree more with this. Buying an auto and then wanting to shift it all of the time is just plain silly, and will wear out your tranny faster than anything.
Hondondada 10-11-2008, 08:22 AM everyone is saying it will not wear out the tranny. how do u think tiptronic works? transmission last just as long in a manumatic than a automatic. Manuals are most likely to have tranny issues, correct guys???
ESHBG 10-11-2008, 08:35 AM everyone is saying it will not wear out the tranny. how do u think tiptronic works? transmission last just as long in a manumatic than a automatic.
But those transmissions are designed to be shifted manually at times, and have fail-safes built into them that you won't have when you shift a simple gated auto manually.
Manuals are most likely to have tranny issues, correct guys???
I would definitely not say "most likely". And the flip side also is if a manual does have tranny issues, they are generally much easier (and cheaper) to repair than an auto.

Keep dreaming.
EVERY 1998-2002 Accord with an Automatic has or will fail. Most under 120k miles. Mine went at 94k.
Many 2003-2004 Accord V6's have reported transmission problems, recalls have been issued, and warrantee's extended on some models/years.
This issue continues onto 1999-2003 TL's, which have "shiftronic". Those are lasting anywhere from 30k, 60k and 100k miles. If one makes it past 130k, it's usually highway miles. All of these units will fail.
And the issue continues AGAIN with 2004-2005 TL's, even some 2006's on www.acurazine.com have issues. 2005's were supposed to be better, but someone with 103k miles just reported theirs crapped out last week. These also have "shiftronic".
The issue is also on the Odyssey dating back to 1998, when Honda used the 1998 Accord's transmission in there, then with the newer 5AT unit, all the way to 2005+. The MDX is affected (2002+), Pilot (2003-2004), CR-V's (2004-2005) too.
At this point, any Honda automatic is a big gamble. Honda is actively helping most customers and replacing units far beyond the warranty period if maintenance records are proven correct and timely.
It seems the problem started back in 1997, when Honda decided to attempt to remove the firm shift feel of the older Accord's, and redesigned the transmission, for just that model year. Turns out, most 1997's had transmission problems by 150k miles, with a few people here to back that up. I used to work a Honda repair shop, and it seemed like those would go at 150k on the dot, not even kidding.
Manuals are much less complex which makes them not nearly as prone to malfunction. Clutches, if not abused can last upwards of 150k miles, I've seen them go well beyond 200k miles.
Lets hope Honda gets it right with the 8th gen Accord, 7th gens have been okay so far it seems, in 4cyl form, but V6's are where the problems seem to lie.
I would recommend you guys not shift your AT's. You have 5 gears, the shifter only lets you select 3 of them. Shifting manually isn't going to make your car faster, if you floor it, the car will take 1st gear to the red, shift, 2nd to red, shift, etc. It's a smart cookie. Not to mention, if you go from D to D3, you won't 'really' know if you're going down one gear, or two. Because either 4th or 5th could be engaged.
And if you want a manumatic feature, should've bought an Acura. That, along with HID's and memory seats are what have always been Acura exclusive items in the case of TL, TSX vs. Accord.
