View Full Version : Motor Oil Question
05honda 10-23-2008, 05:13 PM I took my '05 Accord Hybrid 3.0 in to have the IMA batter checked today. By mistake, the dealership did an oil change on it, putting in some type of Honda motor oil when I had been using Pennzoil Platinum (synthetic)
Would it hurt to have this new oil changed again to what I had been using?
Second question, I have heard a lot about this Q Horsepower synthetic oil by Quaker State. Has anyone tried it in your Accord and if so, how did you like it?
Thanks!
Accordlover 10-23-2008, 05:26 PM You can go back to synthetic now, or when the next oil change is due. It won't matter.
If you're going synthetic, there's nothing better than Mobil1 or Royal Purple IMO. Mobil1 is my preferred synthetic.
05honda 10-23-2008, 05:57 PM Hi, Accordlover!
Sounds like a winner. I think I'm done letting this kindergarten minded dealership do oil changes on my car. I'm going back to a great mechanic we used for years before getting the Honda. Does the Mobil 1 seem to give your Honda that extra little kick?:naughty: Sounds like it's better than Penz Platinum and QPower. Mobil always was a great product.
I appreciate that info. and will mention this to my old mechanic. Also gonna write down the Mobil1 & Royal Purple.
Thanks again-

We Mobil1 it in my dad's 2005 TL, and the Royal Purple in our 2003 Mercedes C240. I've yet to try the synthetic in my Accords, as they don't get driven enough for me to see the benefits of synthetic. I change my oil more often due to time than miles.
We're going to put Mobil1 in the 09 Fit after its first oil change, as the maintenance minder system is far too optimistic for me to feel safe running it with conventional motor oil. I think Honda needs to simply start recommending synthetic motor oil for its car, since their new models all have their maintenance minder, which is telling people to change their oil upwards of 8-9k+ miles in some cases.:paranoid:

I only use Mobile 1 as well and I notice a definite difference after about 3k on regular oil. My car get's sluggish and seems like there's a lot of extra friction in the engine ... I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned this on the board yet or maybe my internal gyro is hyper sensitive to these things :) . But this is something that I've noticed on both of my 7th gens with over 100k of experience.
Btw, I've used Pennzoil Platinum before and I think it's pretty good as well.
If you want to save a couple of bucks you might as well get 2k out of the oil that the dealership installed ... it's not going to hurt anything.

No it's not, my MMS tell me to change at ~5k-5.3k. It depends on the temperature(climate) and engine revolutions so if you live in more of a temperate climate then you will have a 'longer' OCI but that does not mean it's taken a toll on your oil because your viscosity and additive packs are not being depleted in as fast of a rate due to lower operating temps and less engine revolutions due to milder driving habits and so as a result, it's adjusting' to how it is being used (driving style + climate) by increasing the time between oil changes. Some time over at http://www.BobistheOilguy.com and you will see that many UOAs (oils tests) show conventional oils can go longer OCIs based on cooler climate and how it's driven (highway versus city etc) and many conventional oils like Yellow bottle Pennzoil, Chevron or Havoline 5w-20/30 can go 7-8k and still have some additives left (measured by TBN).

..and you didn't notice your engine being sluggish off the line after putting in PP? I mistook the heavier feel (like car gained 5-10 pounds) off the line for better throttle response when in actuality it was slower off the line due to oil pump(ing) losses.
RTexasF 10-24-2008, 06:15 AM Why should you have to pay for a synthetic oil change? The dealer blew it so it's up to them to change it back to what you had in it. The same thing happened with a Corolla we had. No oil change was mentioned but they dumped the Mobil 1 and put in bulk dino. One talk to the manager and they put M1 back in the car as a customer relations move.
Mobil 1 and Penz Plat are the tops in the market for an off the shelf oil. Penz Plat is turning in some very good used oil analysis' on Bobistheoilguy and is a little less expensive. Royal Purple is extremely expensive for what you get, which is just an "okay" oil, nothing spectacular, especially considering the lofty price. A bit of reading at the site mentioned will bring you up to speed.
05honda 10-24-2008, 07:46 AM Great. Wonderful. I see our site refuses to post this a.m.
I won't repeat all that I posted, but 1. The dealership didn't charge me a red cent for their screw up, 2. I am having Mobil 1 Syn. put in today. Our old mechanic we used for years before buying the Honda uses Mobil 1 Syn. and he's a retired race car driver. He knows engines. That's good enough for me.
05honda 10-24-2008, 02:53 PM Well, got the Mobile (Go!bile) oil in and already liking it! I was on a parking lot, met a car going across in front me. They signalled for me to go on. I did, and the tires screamed! I thought "Well, looks like Mobile oil is agreeing with it! It should be a great oil, and the next change is going to be longer than with the Pennzoil, March 24th. Not bad. They were having me change Pennzoil every 3 months. This garage has won a Better Business Bureau Ethics Torch Award in 2002! I was telling the guy about my experiences with this Honda service Dept. and he said they aren't too great and really not that good.
Looks as if I've found a new mechanic!
