View Full Version : Fuel Door
Wardster 11-04-2008, 03:52 AM The fuel door on my '09 Sedan does not stay open when I fill up the car. I thought that there would be some type of spring loaded hinge in the door (much like my wife's Element) to keep the door in the open position while fueling.
Is this typical on every Accord, or just mine?

Let me know what they say. I checked mine and noticed that there's no tension to hold it open either. It'll stay open if I push it all the way open, but it just sorta hangs there....??:dunno:
Wardster 11-10-2008, 03:59 AM I took it in to the dealer and the service guy really didn't know what to say at first. He went to the parts department and determined that there is a clip in the fuel door that may not have been put on at the factory. It was really a guess when you consider the fact that it is hard to tell what is and is not in there until you get it tore apart. So, he ordered the clip and I am currently waiting on it to come in.
I will post the outcome once I get the car back.

Why not check another car???:dunno:
If door pops open when lever is pressed, it's fine man. Later.

Two other guys in my office bought the same car and theirs is fine. The door should have some resistance to keep it open during fueling. Currently, the door swings freely with no resistance and I don't want scuffs and chips in my paint because of it, so to me it's not fine.

stiller fan 11-11-2008, 04:48 AM yeah, your fuel door should not flutter in the wind....
none of the honda's that i have seen, driven, or owned, have ever had this problem....
it's more than likely a factory defect, and should be fixed.... :)

I agree. I should have mine fixed since it just sorta hangs there with no resistance.:thumbsdow
Wardster 11-12-2008, 10:28 AM Should only take a half hour to make the repair according to the dealer. The part is in and I have an appointment set up for Friday morning to get it fixed.

Mine is like that too, and doesn't bother me (and I'm anal), but you'd NEVER get chips or scuffs; the door has a stop, and doesn't touch any paint. Why would you get 'scuffs and chips'? Just curious.
And if having resistance is so important to you, I'd remove the fuel door and see what you can do to it (some tape on the hinge, etc) before letting a dealer dick with it and possibly scratch your car. And remember you can't get a replacement door painted from the factory, so they'd probably just find something to add resistance as well. If you want to go that route, I'd give them just the door and not leave the car there; looks like it comes out as an assembly, but could be wrong. Good luck.

Even my 1981 Dodge Omni didn't do that...

That door could bang the nozzle during fueling if it decided to swing closed and chip the paint on the door. The gas cap, which is has a holster of sorts in the fuel door, comes out when filling up as well and bangs against the paint.
As I indicated in earlier posts, two other guys have the exact same car as me (just different colors) and theirs function correctly.
