My father in law just paid $2300 to have a new transmission replaced in his 2002 Accord EX (29K) miles.

I did some searches on this subject and found that Honda did extend the warranty on some Accords but after calling them they informed me that his VIN was not on the covered list and he had to pay the amount.

Is there anything I can do to get him reimbursed - I find it hard to believe that this would fail with 29K miles on the car - any suggestions?

Thanks

BTW - sorry if this is a repost - I did some searches and looks like some folks had some success with Tranny issue. Just trying to get an easy process to follow.

If the work was done at a Honda dealership, he can call Honda corporate and open a case to request consideration for goodwill.

While it's true that the '02s were not officially covered by the warranty extension, the repairs are often goodwilled. He should have pushed harder for goodwill consideration prior to opening his wallet.

Wow he got SCREWED if I do say so myself.

Research really pays off with things like this. Had it been my car, the moment I found out it needed a new transmission, I would've called Honda of America, opened a case requesting FULL replacement (not even 30k miles!!!) and I bet they would've paid for all of it.

Honda knows there's a problem, sadly you might be too late to help since the deal is done really. I would still give Honda a call, 18009991009, and have the VIN ready, along with the repair documents for the transmission. Explain that this is unacceptable for a Honda, and if you've been a loyal customer, push that too. Honda doesn't want to loose loyal owners.

I really hope he used a dealer... let us know.

For future reference, your father should change his transmission fluid every 2 years since he doesn't drive much. Normally it's every 30k miles.

For reference, mine is not one the 'recall affected' cars, but honda paid for all of it in Jan of 06 at 95k miles.

I think he'll be fine as Honda will reimburse and you even after the repair was done. In addition, one guy on acurazine had his transmission rebuilt at an independent shop and he was later reimbursed by Honda as he found out that his car was eligible for the warranty extension.

I had the same problem - Flashing D light and had the car tested at 2 different Honda dealerships. Both recommended I get the tranny replaced.

Problem: 105,000kms and/or 5years+1 month out of warranty - couldn't get much worse, but after calling Honda and getting denied under VIN warranty (extended drivetrain for 02 Accords), they recommended I call the dealership to get it replaced under "good will". I had religiously taken the car for all servicing by the way. They paid for parts, but i had to pay for labor ~$700, not without some complaining mind you.

So there is still hope.
