It stands for "Daytime Running lights", its a mandatory feature in Canada. The headlights are always on when you are driving, (at lower intensity then regular night driving).. apparently research has shown when headlights are on during the day it reduces head on collisions...

Everything is automatic you dont even know they are on and the light in dash goes off,, when car is put in drive,

Also,, i have sideview mirror defrosters... i think this is also different in the u.s.

Oh yes, I do remember my drive through Canada on my trip to Alaska and that you had to run with your headlights on. Makes sense to me.

When people get into my car, they do compliment the gages.
