: So, I went to the dealer today...

i got into my car and begin to make the small drive up north to the dealer.... then, my ABS light turns on!!! :paranoid: i figured "great, what next?"....

after the inspection, they told me that i need a new muffler, new RR ABS sensor, and a head gasket (which was replaced 20k ago, last fall)..... sigh!!!!! they didn't tell me that i needed new tires or brakes though (tires are pretty much bald now, brakes not too sure).......

what to do??? :dunno: :bawling: :( :thumbsdow :paranoid:

if i did get a new one, i would still be paying more per year, believe it or not.....at least, that's my calculation......

my estimate with all the work that needs done: pushing $1k (maybe more), but still cheaper than a car payment.....

Did the dealership replace your last head gasket? What is the warranty on that work?

I hear it is pretty common for Honda motors to keep blowing head gaskets once the head comes off for the first time, but 20k seems too soon.

no, independent honda mechanic....one i do not go to anymore due to trust and overcharging issues! :censored:

although, it did look like it was "leaking" from the oil cap, not the gasket..... may not need one after all.....

So this head gasket....did you over heat it when you needed the thermostat? Why did they figure you need a head gasket now???

So this head gasket....did you over heat it when you needed the thermostat? Why did they figure you need a head gasket now???

even with the faulty thermostat, it'll run normal, or cooler than normal (never warmer than the norm)...has never overheated

they said that cause they saw a bit of oil on engine and figured that, but even when the front desk guy showed me, he even said it's probably spillage or a bad oil cap..... the car burns NO OIL!!! :)

i would prbably go for either a late model 5th-gen, 6th gen, or maybe a slightly used 7th gen (V6 with maybe the 6spd).....anysia will have to teach me how to drive a stick though.... :lmao: :naughty: :)

If you can get another person to turn start the car for you... watch for bubbles at the overflow bucket while it's cranking..... since you dont have any symptoms (oil on the outside isn't one) if you see no bubbles, I'd pospone or disregard the head gasket thing.....

No, Hondas aren't prone to repeated head gaskets, if done right. We've done LOTS during the sidework days..... if the head hasn't been damaged (warped) then they go fine! We've had then go on for 100K plus...... on our own too!

i believe that the head gasket that was on there was the original with the car, but i'm not too sure..... it was replaced around 210k miles....

with my estimate (including labor), i'm thinking about 1k, instead of 2k..... remember, i won't be going to the dealer to get this stuff fixed. i'll be going to my trusted honda mechanic in pit once i go on leave and set up an appt....

really, the only pressing things that really need done are the oil change and tires (i'm pretty sure the brakes are ok, but i'm not 100% sure tho)....

th rest i'll just spread out through the summer to get fixed......also gotta keep in mind that once we lose the rest of our people at my work (base probably closing down), it's going to be bare-bones til i leave in january (i.e. not going to pit much at all, money to spend on car instead of buying gas @ $200 dollars/gallon)...

can they shave down the head gasket to buy you some more time with it?? i know they did that forthe ex's corolla sr5.. and then he managed to sell the car for $1200 to some poor sap..... it was an 86 and he sold it in late 2000..... ac didn't work, it had been in a major accident (prior to his ownership), but the kid loved the sporrty look and the pioneer stereo we had put in it.....

ps-if you buy my car, i'll get the inspection done for ya!!!!! due in may (or is it june???) :dunno:

well, i feel that she still has some life left in hewr to be honest....plus, this is supposed to be my brother's car once he gets his license. what i am trying to do now is trying to only replace what really needs replaced (triage, so to speak)....

all it has to do is last me one more year, and if it doesn't run by then, donate it to charity. i can't see the motor or tranny blowing anytime soon though.....

they need to make sure the surface of the head and the surface of the block are flat. if they are not, then "shaving", or milling is neccesary.

stiller fan
04-20-2005, 03:08 PM
just remember too, that they saw ol leaking from the head.... when i looked at it, it looked like it was coming from the oil cap (possibly spillage)...

stevel
04-20-2005, 03:11 PM
that is how civics leaking, from the head gasket on the back side where oil is fed to the head if I remember right...... just above the oil filter. could it be the oil pressure switch that is right back there also?

stiller fan
04-20-2005, 03:19 PM
:dunno:

i just popped the hood of the car...it looks like there is very very light seepage on the right side as your looking at it where the head meets the block.....then checked the dipstick: still full......could be a improperly installed gasket, or spillage from when they did the oil chg last time.....

stevel
04-20-2005, 03:35 PM
are you sure it's not where the valve cover meets the head?

The oil leak sounds like the "head cover gasket" more commonly known as the valve cover gasket.

i never had a problem with it leaking before, why now??? :(

Valve cover gaskets are supposed to be replaced every 15K on that age car, when the valves are adjusted...... it's concidered normal wear....

stiller fan
04-20-2005, 08:10 PM
wow, really??? :jawdrop: hmmmmmm, i guess i'm a bit overdue for a valve adjustment too, but my signature won't fit that many characters..... :lmao:

just a heads-up and a question:

at times, my ABS light will not come on when i start driving, but the ABS will activate as if i'm on a slick road when coming to a stop......the road is dry, btw..... think that it's still the sensor??? :dunno:

my mechanic is going to take a look at my muffler on monday; hopefully he'll be able to give me a discount on a new one, since the one on there now isn't even a year old yet and has a hole in it.... :(

ahhhh yes, so many bills, so little money to pay for them all.... :(

stiller fan
05-02-2005, 08:49 PM
hmmm, 4 new tires tomorrow....

also, went to my normal mechanic today. found out that they pulled the fuse for ABS (no more seizures when coming to stop :lmao: ), muffler has a weep hole is normal and will pass emission in december (huh??? ), and that when i had my oil changed since the beginning of the year, someone put a too big of a drain plug into the oil pan stripping the threads (now need new oil pan) :furious: :headbash:

sigh!!!!!

1 more year.....

ever heard of a muffler having a weep hole (the muffler itself, not the piping)? i haven't.....
