View Full Version : Does your oil stay super clean...?

So after 2500 miles of ownership, admittedly not all of them at redline or anything, but not putting around under 3k rpm either, my oil is still honey colored when checked on the dipstick. I'm at 60% on the oil life indicator and also haven't noticed the level changing at all either. All this at nearly 55k...:dunno:
Does anyone else have a motor that keeps the oil so clean?

My car darkens the oil in about 2k. I notice the V6s seem to darken the oil faster than the 4 cylinders do.

Really? I thought the k-series had the sludge issues. Then again, maybe sludge and oil color aren't related.

Dark oil doesn't mean sludge. In fact, oils color says nothing about its quality.

K24 does not have common sludge issues, I assume you saw the recent poster who is dealing with sludge in his Accord, which he bought used. (not knowing how well maintained it was prior to his ownership).

52k! You're barely broken in.

mmmm grade b is so good......
Yes you are right, the recent used car sludge issue is really the only mention of k series sludge I can think of, but it's still more sludge than I have ever read about as far as a j30 is concerned.

I recently changed my Moto synth blend after 5K miles (car is at 64K). Color was not like new - kind of more dark brown.

Wow! Mine isn't like that. When I change my car's oil, the color is very dark...close to black. And I use Mobil 1 ever since my first oil change.

There are detergents in all oils...That is why they get dark that means they are doing there job.

Yeah, sorry Mods. As I posted it I should have realized... (:notworthybegging forgivness)
So dark oil means it's doing it's job? I thought oil changed color when it was getting contaminated. Gasoline bypassing the rings and contaminating the oil in the crank case for example. Now, don't get me wrong, I know dark oil is the norm and that just because it's changing color, doesn't mean it's not protecting your engine. I've got a VW tdi, for example, and while it might be an apples to oranges comparison, that oil is already black after the start up to check the level after an oil change.
This is the reason for my post in the first place 'is it normal for your oil to stay as clean as mine does?'. Is it just that my motor still has some tight tolerances dispite the 55k?

It tells me that you have very good air filtration for one thing and the internals are clean. Mine darkens @2500-3000 miles but I'm running a shorty intake and like to romp on it. By the time 7500-8000 miles rolls around (or annual oil change if low miles) it's usually dark. M1 0W20 since the first oil change.
